Barbie club teaching children positive messages
A primary school has started a Barbie-themed after-school club and has had to set up a waiting list for places because of its popularity.
Teaching assistant Claudia Bradbury at Newport Infant School in Shropshire came up with the idea and said she wanted to use the dolls to teach the children they "can do anything" and about equality.
She grew up with a love of the dolls and said she wanted to "throw a little bit of sparkle in there as well".
Parents have said it has improved their children's confidence and social skills.
Ms Bradbury said the idea came to her after staff were invited to come up with ideas for after-school clubs.
She described herself as a "big Barbie advocate" who had grown up loving them when "it maybe wasn't cool to like Barbie".
Since becoming an adult she said she had rediscovered her love for them and thought they could be used to pass on positive messages.
"She's had so many careers, she can be anything and it proves to us and teaches us from an early age that we can do anything as well," she said.
Ms Bradbury said she wanted to help the children become more confident communicators, to learn to take turns and that it was about "just embracing everybody's uniqueness".
She said she also wanted to teach the children about things like feminism from a young age.
The club, which is held every Monday, is into its second week and Ms Bradbury has been appealing for donations of unwanted Barbies and Action Men.
Six-year-old Clara is one of the members of Barbie club and said she enjoyed helping "younger children learn more about Barbies".
Ava, 7, said "It's really exciting because lots of young children love Barbies and they can come here and play with all their friends after school."
One parent, Steph, said she thought it had been "absolutely fantastic" for her Barbie-loving daughter.
She had been "struggling socially", she said, and the group was helping her build confidence.
Another mum, Becky, said her daughter was learning to express herself through her appearance.
"Her personality is coming through even more now, which is really nice to see," she added.

Mia Goth is joining the new Ryan Gosling-powered Star Wars installment, Starfighter, taking over the role originally offered Anora Oscar winner Mikey Madison. The casting coup is the latest scrap of news about the anticipated project, which will be helmed by Shawn Levy and which had its coming-out party at Star Wars Celebration in April 2025. It's a new adventure. It's set in a period of time that we haven't seen explored yet,' the filmmaker said. 'The reality is that this script is just so good. Bernhard has been a singular and outspoken voice for decades, whether it was during her run on Roseanne as one of TV's only openly lesbian characters or more recent roles, like the upcoming Josh Safdie film, Marty Supreme. ($84.24–$141.92) June 17, at InBound Brew Co. in Minneapolis Pitch-A-Friend is a unique combination of a singles mixer and a game show. People take to the stage with a 3-to-5-minute PowerPoint presentation to pitch one of their single friends to a crowd of other singles. It's ridiculous and fun. The presentations are positive and heartfelt pitches for why you should date their friend. Pitch-A-Friend will also host nights on June 11 at Rail Werks Brewing Depot in Columbia Heights, June 27 at Wild Mind Ales in Minneapolis, and July 10 at Fat Pants Brewing in Eden Prairie. Every night is LGBTQ+-friendly, but the June 17 one is specifically the group's "Queer Night" event. (free) June 21, at Insight Brewing in Minneapolis Dubbed a "charity party for cats and queers," Insight is bringing back its patio party filled with vendors, artists, beer, and cats that need some scratches. The free event, cosponsored by Twin Cities Pride and Ruff Start Rescue, will have a "kitten snuggling booth" where 100% of proceeds for entering go toward supporting Ruff Start's shelters. There will also be live music from Daphne Jane, Riley Skinner, and Chastity Brown. (free entry) June 22, at First Avenue in Minneapolis Wrestling and pride? If that's surprising, you probably haven't been paying close attention to F1rst Wrestling or seen its "F1rst Wrestling Is For Everyone" t-shirts. Wrestlepalooza will include burlesque from Sweetpea and Co., music by The Denim Boys, and plenty of wrestling. Proceeds will benefit OutFront Minnesota. ($45.90) June 27–29, at Loring Park in Minneapolis Minnesota's largest free pride festival returns — sans Target — from June 27 to 29. It starts with the Twin Cities Pride Youth Night on June 27 from 4–8 p.m. Then the party runs throughout the weekend with three stages of entertainment, artists, more than 650 vendors, heaps of food trucks, a couple of beer gardens, a cannabis garden, and lots more around Loring Park. The festival still hasn't outlined all of the entertainment that will be happening, but that will undoubtedly be coming soon. And don't forget the Twin Cities Pride Parade. That'll roll down Hennepin Avenue from 3rd Street to Spruce from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (free) June 27, at Minneapolis Sculpture Garden A day before the Twin Cities Pride Festival takes over Loring Park, cross Lyndale Avenue to taste the wares from heaps of local craft breweries in some good company. ($59.43–$74.93) June 28, at First Avenue in Minneapolis Flip Phone, the Minnesota-founded event promoter that hosts drag brunches all year, has a lot going on in June. That includes this First Avenue party starring RuPaul's Drag Race vet Anetra. The full June lineup for Flip Phone is extensive, including more than a dozen drag brunches with themes like Prince, Bad Bunny, the 2000s, and Shrek vs. SpongeBob. It's also got a one-woman show with Suzie Toot, a Pride Parade viewing party, and a Pride Disco Block Party on June 29.
