Philippine prosecutors demand trial of VP Sara Duterte over alleged assassination plot and misuse of public funds

Malay Mail5 hours ago

MANILA, June 27 — Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte must be tried, and ultimately convicted, over serious charges, including an alleged threat to have the president killed, prosecutors argued in a submission to a Senate impeachment court on Friday.
Duterte is facing removal from her post and a lifetime ban from office if convicted. She has denied wrongdoing and maintains her impeachment is politically motivated and the result of an acrimonious falling out between her and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Lower house prosecutors said the weight of the evidence against Duterte justifies a full-blown trial, rejecting her defence that the allegations against her in an impeachment complaint were unsubstantiated.
'The severity of the charges leaves no room for technical evasion. A trial is not only warranted but necessary to reinforce justice, uphold democratic principles, and affirm that no individual, regardless of rank of influence, stands above the law,' they said in their response to Duterte's defence.
'It is obvious from a simple reading of (Duterte's response), which relies on misleading claims and baseless procedural objections, that the only legal strategy of the defence is to have the case dismissed and avoid trial,' the prosecutors said.
Duterte, who was impeached by the lower house in February, has described the impeachment complaint as unconstitutional and 'nothing more than a scrap of paper.'
Included in the complaint were allegations she misused public funds while vice president and education secretary and had plotted to assassinate Marcos, the first lady and the house speaker based on remarks during a November press conference about hiring an assassin.
Duterte's impeachment is widely seen in the Philippines as part of a broader power struggle ahead of the 2028 election, which Marcos cannot contest due to a single-term limit for presidents and will likely seek to groom a successor to protect his legacy. Marcos has distanced himself from the impeachment.
Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, is expected to run for the presidency in 2028 if she survives the impeachment and would be a strong contender. — Reuters

Ex-civil servant jailed 30 years for murdering infant daughter

Maidin Ibnuhashim was spared the minimum 12 strokes of the rotan as it was only imposed on male offenders aged 50 and below. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A former civil servant has been sentenced to 30 years in jail for killing his nine-month-old daughter after the Federal Court allowed the prosecution's appeal to reinstate the murder charge. The three-member bench, sitting in Kota Kinabalu and chaired by Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim, yesterday ruled that the prosecution had proven all the ingredients for murder during the trial. Hasnah said that Maidin Ibnuhashim had intended to inflict injuries on the infant, which ultimately caused her tragic death in 2018. Justices Hanipah Farikullah and Azizah Nawawi also heard the appeal. However, the bench opted to sentence Maidin, 60, to the minimum jail term of 30 years. He was spared the minimum 12 strokes of the rotan as it was only imposed on male offenders aged 50 and below. The court had the discretion to impose either the death penalty or a jail term ranging from 30 to 40 years. Maidin was initially charged with murdering his daughter, Nurul Shafika, at his rented home in Kampung Gersik Lama, Labuan, between Aug 10 and Aug 13, 2018. In 2022, the trial judge reduced the charge to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced Maidin to 18 years' imprisonment from the date of his arrest. Last year, the prosecution failed in its appeal to reinstate the murder charge, while Maidin's appeal for acquittal from the culpable homicide conviction was also dismissed. Both parties then filed fresh appeals to the Federal Court, with the prosecution succeeding this time. During the trial in the High Court, a child eyewitness testified that she saw Maidin dip his daughter's fingers and toes into hot water from a rice cooker, and hold her under a running tap, letting the water flow over her head and face. The witness also said Maidin slapped the baby's cheeks repeatedly whenever she cried, threw her onto a mattress – causing head injuries – and placed her in a baby swing that struck a cupboard several times. An autopsy conducted by pathologist Dr N Murali concluded that the cause of death was 'severe head injury in a child with soft tissue injuries to the face, mixed superficial and deep dermal burns over the fingers and toes, and underlying bronchopneumonia'. Deputy public prosecutor Eyu Ghim Siang appeared for the prosecution while David Tan represented Maidin.

Cambodia's Hun Sen accuses Thai PM of ‘insulting king'

Thailand has strict lese majeste laws, which bans criticism of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and his close family. (EPA Images pic) PHNOM PENH : Cambodia's influential ex-premier Hun Sen today accused Thailand's prime minister of insulting the Thai king, as tensions between the neighbouring countries intensified. He said prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's comments about her military commander – who she labelled an 'opponent' – in a leaked phone call with the veteran leader over a border dispute were 'an insult to the king'. 'An insult to a regional commander is an insult to the Thai king because it is only the king who issued a royal decree to appoint him,' Hun Sen said in a livestream on his official Facebook page. The daughter of controversial ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra – who goes on trial for lese-majeste next week – faces being sacked as prime minister as the phone call scandal has triggered calls for her to step down and her government to teeter. Hun Sen – father of Cambodia's prime minister Hun Manet and former close ally to Thaksin – last week posted the full 17-minute recording of the private conversation on his official Facebook page. 'I just let Thailand know how the prime minister committed a dirty act to their nation,' he said today. In the recording posted online, the two leaders discussed restrictions imposed on border crossings after a military clash last month killed a Cambodian soldier. Thailand has strict lese majeste laws, which bans criticism of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and his close family and carries sentences of up to 15 years in jail per offence.

Anwar in Jakarta for talks with Prabowo on bilateral ties, regional stability

JAKARTA, June 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Jakarta today for an official visit, during which he is scheduled to meet President Prabowo Subianto. They will discuss key bilateral issues, follow up on recent Asean engagements, and explore ways to strengthen regional stability as Malaysia and Indonesia deepen their strategic cooperation. The visit comes as Malaysia holds the Asean Chairmanship for 2025, with Kuala Lumpur continuing to lead key regional agendas throughout the year. Anwar touched down at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta at around 1 pm local time, where he was warmly received by Prabowo. The Prime Minister was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour upon arrival. Anwar leads a high-level delegation that includes Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz; Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir; Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil; and Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Upon arriving at Istana Merdeka, Anwar was received by Prabowo and conducted a customary inspection of the guard of honour mounted by the Presidential Security Force, followed by the playing of national anthems and a gun salute. Both leaders then introduced their respective ministerial delegations, followed by a photo session and the signing of the guest book. The programme continued with a four-eye meeting between Anwar and Prabowo, held behind closed doors, before ministers from both sides joined an extended bilateral meeting. The meetings are expected to focus on trade, investment, education, communications, commodities and regional affairs, in line with the ministerial portfolios represented in the Malaysian delegation. The visit also forms part of preparations for the 13th Annual Malaysia–Indonesia Consultation, scheduled to take place later this year. — Bernama
