Police believe a group of teenagers believed to be involved in multiple gun store break-ins

CBS News13-02-2025

WEST MIFFLIN (KDKA) - A group of teenagers were caught on camera attempting to steal guns but broke into a hobby shop in the same building as the gun store by mistake.
Authorities have told KDKA-TV that the attempted burglary is connected to the successful burglary at Allegheny Arms last month and a third gun store in Lima, Ohio - just south of Youngstown.
In speaking with federal, state, and local authorities, they are actively pursuing all of these cases with West Mifflin Police's chief saying the group of four juveniles who attempted to break into Legion Arms didn't get much, but they did go right over to another gun store in Bethel Park later that morning.
However, no arrests have been made.
Gun store owners are worried the kids won't get a punishment that fits the seriousness of the crimes.
On January 13, just before 4:30 in the morning, a stolen Kia circled the parking lot of the Legion Gun Store in West Mifflin, and then a hammer shattered the door and four people, believed to be four juveniles from the Pittsburgh area, entered with face masks, gloves, and duffle bags scrambled through the store looking for guns.
After the alarm went off, they realized they were in Iron City R.C. Hobbies on the wrong side of the building. Audio from the surveillance video could be heard with one suspect saying "Where are the guns?"
They were in and out within 60 seconds and nothing was taken from the store.
Legion Arms owner Jonathan Stark said this has never happened in the 10 years he's been open.
"We are fortunate they were in the wrong place," he said. "It's hard not to take it personally."
The West Mifflin police chief confirmed that the same group of juveniles then bolted to Bethel Park and shot their way into Allegheny Arms and Gun Works where they stole more than 50 guns in a matter of minutes.
"[Law enforcement] were able to get a lot of good information from the footage that we were able to provide and the evidence they left behind," Stark said.
Not long after when police and the ATF recovered several of the stolen guns in McKees Rocks, two juveniles were found on a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus with stolen guns.
Sources have also told KDKA-TV that one or two of the same people in the Bethel Park burglary are also tied to a break-in at Expert Outfitters near Youngstown, Ohio on January 23 when they shot their way in and stole 23 handguns.
Then, in the most recent case, on Super Bowl Sunday around 5 a.m., surveillance video showed the suspects trying to pry open the front door of Riffin Arms in Stoneboro, Mercer County.
An ATF spokesperson said no suspects are in custody at this time but they are looking into potential connections at other gun store burglaries.
Owners like Stark now are being more vigilant.
"There's no question they will end up on the streets and that is why it's important that they do be recovered, they will be used in crimes," he said. "These are adult crimes, plain and simple."
Shaler's police chief also confirmed that two vehicles were stolen on Sunday less than a mile apart from one another and one of the vehicles was recovered in Pittsburgh.
The other was stopped by Jackson Township police in Mahoning County, Ohio. Three 17-year-olds and a 13-year-old from the Pittsburgh area were arrested.
At last check, they are currently being held in a juvenile detention center.
However, at this time, no arrests have been made in any of the gun shop burglaries.

An immigrant in Wisconsin has been released on bond after false accusation he threatened Trump

MADISON, Wis. -- A man who was falsely accused of threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump and threatened with deportation to Mexico was released Thursday from a Wisconsin jail on bond, three weeks after federal immigration agents arrested him. Ramón Morales Reyes, 54, was accused of a writing a letter threatening Trump in a social media post by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that got widespread national coverage. The post includes Morales Reyes' photo and an excerpt from the letter he purportedly wrote in English. But the claims quickly fell apart as Wisconsin authorities determined that Reyes, who doesn't speak English well or write in the language, was framed. Morales Reyes was a victim in a violent 2023 attack where his bike was stolen. According to authorities, the alleged attacker, Demetric D. Scott, forged the letter to try to clear his case. Morales Reyes was set to be a witness in Scott's July trial for armed robbery and aggravated battery. Morales Reyes was released in the afternoon after paying the $7,500 bond that an immigration judge set on Tuesday. Speaking to WISN-TV, Morales Reyes said he and his lawyer will fight his deportation. 'I believe (the lawyer) knows the history and all of you know what happened," he said. He was later met by relatives and members of the Milwaukee-based immigrant rights group Voces de la Frontera, which has helped work on his case. Christine Neumann-Ortiz, the organization's executive director, said Morales Reyes was 'relieved' and 'very grateful for all of the support he's received.' Judge Carla Espinoza said at the immigration court hearing in Chicago that Morales Reyes was not a threat to the community. Morales Reyes, a married father of three U.S. citizen children, works as a dishwasher in Milwaukee. He was arrested by immigration agents last month after dropping a child off at school. He immigrated from Mexico in the 1980s and doesn't have legal permission to be in the U.S. This year, he applied for a U visa, which is for people in the country illegally who are victims of serious crimes. Getting such a visa can take years. Homeland Security issued a statement to reporters last week saying that although Morales Reyes was no longer considered a threat to Trump, federal attorneys would still pursue an immigration case. The government alleges that Morales Reyes reentered the U.S. numerous times without a visa. Morales Reyes had been held in the Dodge Detention Center in Juneau, about 70 miles (113 kilometers) north of Milwaukee. He was released after the federal government did not appeal the setting of his bond. Noem's social media post blaming Morales Reyes for an assassination attempt, which was circulated by Trump supporters, remains online.

Antonio Brown charged with attempted murder after shooting at Miami boxing event: reports

Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown is back in trouble with the law as he now faces an attempted murder charge in connection with a scuffle in mid-May outside a popular social media influencer's boxing event in Miami, reports say. Early Saturday morning, on May 17, social media erupted with videos and posts showing Brown allegedly being jumped by multiple people trying to steal his jewelry outside the event held by influencer Adin Ross at a warehouse. READ MORE: Antonio Brown says he 'was jumped' outside Adin Ross boxing event in Miami Shortly after, other videos depicted the All-Pro wide receiver appearing to hold a gun and run out of frame — seconds later, gunshots were heard. Miami police confirmed that night they had investigated what occurred, but it didn't culminate in any arrests. Brown was detained briefly before eventually being let go. On Wednesday, that changed when a Miami-Dade judge signed an arrest warrant charging Brown of attempted murder with a firearm, the Washington Post reported. A bond was also set at $10,000, with the stipulation that he had to remain under house arrest until the trial. The warrant echoed what millions had seen on social media in May. Brown had shot a weapon; the reason why, however, was under dispute. Despite Brown's claims of being jumped, police said they found video of Brown punching another man, which sparked a melee. It also showed Brown taking a gun from a security guard and then running toward the man he punched — two gunshots ensued, the Post reported. It's unclear if Brown has been arrested or if he has obtained a lawyer. As of Thursday evening, the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office hasn't elaborated on the nature of the charges. Brown grew up in Liberty City and graduated from Miami Norland High School. During his NFL career, he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the then-Oakland Raiders, the New England Patriots and won a Super Bowl championship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
