Embattled Thai PM reshuffles cabinet as political crisis rages in country

The Star5 hours ago

BANGKOK (AFP): Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra began a cabinet reshuffle on Monday as a political and judicial crisis sparked by a leaked phone call threatens to sink her government.
The 38-year-old daughter of controversial former PM Thaksin Shinawatra began handing out ministerial posts vacated when her main coalition partner quit last week -- a move that nearly took her government down.
Paetongtarn, in office for less than a year, is hanging on by a thread, and on top of the party horse-trading she now faces a Constitutional Court case that could see her barred from office.
She faced calls to quit or call an election last week as critics accused her of undermining the country and insulting the army during the leaked call with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen, which focused on a festering border dispute.
The conservative Bhumjaithai party quit the governing coalition led by Paetongtarn's Pheu Thai party over the call, leaving it with a wafer-thin majority.
But the crisis stabilised as other coalition partners said they would stay, and Pheu Thai secretary general Sorawong Thienthong told AFP on Monday that all 10 remaining parties were sticking with the government.
"None of the other parties are pulling out -- the remaining parties are staying united with the government," Sorawong said.
"The prime minister has discussed the reshuffle with other political leaders."
The new cabinet line-up will be finalised by Friday but sources said changes are expected in key positions including the defence ministry as the border row with Cambodia rumbles on.
With the loss of Bhumjaithai, the government can command only a handful more than the 248 votes needed for a majority in parliament, making it deeply vulnerable.
Even if Paetongtarn rides out the parliamentary crisis, a potentially bigger threat is looming in the form of the Constitutional Court.
A group of conservative senators has submitted a petition asking the court to throw Paetongtarn out of office over her conduct in the call with Hun Sen.
The same court sacked Paetongtarn's predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, in an ethics case in August last year.
Srettha was the latest in a long line of Thai PMs from parties linked to Thaksin to be kicked out of office by court orders or military coups -- including Thaksin himself and his sister Yingluck Shinawatra.
Thai politics has endured two decades of chronic instability fuelled by a long-running battle between the military, pro-royalist establishment and parties linked to Thaksin.
While Thaksin, 75, remains popular with his rural base, he is deeply disliked and distrusted by Thailand's powerful elite. - AFP

Israel power supplier reports damage near ‘strategic' facility

JERUSALEM: Israel's state power company reported supply disruptions on Monday after damage near a 'strategic infrastructure facility' at an undisclosed location, as Iran launched a fresh wave of missiles. 'Due to damage near a strategic infrastructure facility of the Israel Electric Corporation... disruptions in electricity supply are being reported in several communities in the area,' the IEC said in a statement, without specifying the cause. Avraham Rabukhin, head of the grid division for the Tel Aviv and Coastal district, later told AFP that a missile fell near one of the company's facilities. Journalists were allowed to film the area of the strike, but under Israel's military censorship were ordered not to publish any information about the location. Rabukhin said teams arrived on scene to assess the damage between 15 and 30 minutes after receiving the initial reports. 'In the next half an hour, we connected all the disconnected customers,' he added. 'It's very small damage, and we will do our best to do all repairing works.' Iran launched at least three salvos of missiles at Israel on Monday morning, the Israeli military said. Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service reported no casualties. AFP footage showed an excavator clearing away debris at the site of a missile strike in southern Israel. Israel launched large-scale attacks on Iran on June 13 targeting its missile and nuclear facilities, as well as military leaders and security services. The full extent of the damage from Iran's attacks on Israel is not known due to military censorship rules, but at least 50 impacts have been acknowledged nationwide and 24 people have died, according to official figures. Aerial assaults raged between the two foes on Monday, while Tehran vowed retaliation over the bunker-buster bombs American warplanes unleashed at the weekend on three nuclear sites.

Israeli strike on Tehran jail ‘irresponsible': French prisoner's sister

PARIS: An Israeli strike on Evin prison in Tehran on Monday is completely irresponsible and puts prisoners 'in mortal danger', said Noemie Kohler, the sister of French national Cecile Kohler who is jailed there. Iran's judiciary said Israeli strikes left sections of the facility damaged and Israel's defence minister confirmed the army was targeting it. Cecile Kohler has been held along with her partner Jacques Paris in Evin since May 2022 on espionage charges their families reject. Overall, Iran is believed to hold around 20 European nationals in what some Western governments describe as a strategy of hostage-taking aimed at extracting concessions from the West. Most are held in Evin, a large, heavily fortified complex notorious among activists for rights abuses. It is located in a northern district of the Iranian capital. 'This strike is completely irresponsible. Cecile, Jacques and all the prisoners are in mortal danger,' Noemie Kohler told AFP. 'This is really the worst thing that could have happened,' she added. 'We have no news, we don't know if they are still alive, we're panicking,' Noemie Kohler said. She urged the French authorities to 'condemn these extremely dangerous strikes' and secure the release of the French prisoners. She also expressed concern about the risk of 'chaos' and 'riots'. Noemie Kohler has tirelessly campaigned to secure the release of her sister and her sister's partner Jacques Paris. Chirinne Ardakani, a lawyer for the Kohler family, denounced the strikes as 'illegal'. 'The risk of riots, general confusion and reprisals by the security forces against the insurgent prisoners raises fears of bloodshed,' she told AFP. 'Both sides are playing with people's lives.' The Iranian judiciary's website, Mizan Online, said that the prison buildings remained 'under control.'

Israel targeting Tehran's Evin prison, ‘agencies of repression': minister

JERUSALEM: Israel targeted Tehran's notorious Evin prison as well as the command centres of security agencies in Iran responsible for 'maintaining the regime's stability', a minister and the military said Monday. The Israeli military 'is carrying out strikes of unprecedented force against regime targets and agencies of government repression in the heart of Tehran', Defence Minister Israel Katz wrote on X as the Iran-Israel war raged for an 11th day. These included Evin prison -- 'which holds political prisoners and regime opponents' -- as well as the command centres of the domestic Basij militia and the powerful Revolutionary Guards, he added. In a separate statement, the military said that it was hitting command centres of security forces including the Revolutionary Guards, a wing of the Iranian military. 'These forces... are responsible on behalf of the Iranian regime's military for defending the homeland security, suppressing threats, and maintaining the regime's stability,' it said in a statement. Israel began its military campaign against Iran on June 13 with strikes on the country's nuclear and missile facilities, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described as an 'existential' threat for his country. But the list of targets has widened since then, encompassing state television and the Iranian domestic security forces, raising speculation that Israel is seeking to topple Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. President Donald Trump hinted Sunday at interest in changing Iran's system of government, despite several of his administration officials earlier stressing that US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites overnight on Saturday-Sunday did not have that goal. 'It's not politically correct to use the term, 'Regime Change,' but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn't there be a Regime change??? MIGA!!!' Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. AFP journalists heard explosions in northern Tehran on Monday and Iran's Red Crescent reported a strike near its building in the area. Evin prison is often used to hold foreign nationals and Iranians that are seen by rights groups as political prisoners. Iran is believed to hold around 20 European nationals, many of whose cases have never been published, in what some Western governments describe as a strategy of hostage-taking aimed at extracting concessions. The prison is a large, heavily fortified complex located in a northern district of the Iranian capital, and is notorious among activists for alleged rights abuses. At least three waves of incoming Iranian missiles were reported by the Israeli military on Monday. Katz, a hardliner in Netanyahu's government, added that 'for every rocket fired at Israel's home front, the Iranian dictator will be severely punished, and the attacks will continue with full force'.
