Openly gay Australian football player still faces online death threats

The first openly gay man to play in Australia's domestic soccer league says he is still subject to death threats four years after going public about his sexuality.

Josh Cavallo, who plays for Adelaide United in the A-League, told the FIFPro Footballers Unfiltered podcast that 'in a world of football, being a gay … player is a very toxic place'.
'I still think we're a very, very long way from being accepted in this space, unfortunately,' he said.
Cavallo was 21 in 2021 when he decided to come out, acknowledging his video message 'took the world of football for a shock'. He still regards it as 'the best move and decision' he is made, but warns that there's 'mountains of downside'.
In the podcast, he asked rhetorically: 'Why has no one ever come out to be themselves and be successful and play?'

'And I understand that now looking back – all the negativity, all the things that come your way, there's multiple, multiple, multiple death threats that come my way daily, still, and it's quite sad to see.'

Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr knocked out in Champions League semi-final

Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr were dumped out of the Asian Champions League Elite as Japan's Kawasaki Frontale spectacularly ripped up the script with a 3-2 semi-final victory on Wednesday to reach the continental final for the first time. Advertisement The big-spending Saudi Pro League team succumbed in Jeddah when Yuto Ozeki and Akihiro Ienaga struck after Sadio Mane's deflected effort in the 28th minute had cancelled out Tatsuya Ito's 10th-minute opener for the J-League side. Aiman Yahya scored from distance with three minutes left for Al-Nassr to set up a tense finish but Frontale held on. Kawasaki will face Al-Ahli, another Saudi side boasting a squad packed with high-profile foreign internationals, in Saturday's final, with both clubs looking to win their maiden continental crown. Al-Nassr boss Stefano Pioli blamed an error-strewn display for his side's exit. Kawasaki Frontale (blue) celebrate as Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane (yellow) show dejection. Hong Kong golfer Sabrina Wong, 13, wins R&A under-16 amateur championship in England

Sabrina Wong of Hong Kong won the R&A girls' under-16 amateur championship at Gog Magog Golf Club in Cambridge, England on Sunday after a one-shot win over Ireland's Hannah Lee-McNamara. Advertisement Wong, who is only 13, became the first player to win both the main title as well as the prize for the championship's leading player under the age of 14. The Scotland-based Wong, who was the overnight leader, won the championship after a dramatic finish. Lee-McNamara had eagled the last hole, the par-5 18th, to complete a superb 65 – the low score of the day. But Wong, who started playing golf when she was two, notched a birdie to prevail with a 70 to secure the Angela Uzielli Trophy. First-round leader Salome Lumbaca of France scored a 70 to finish third on eight-under, while her compatriot Axelle Guillemard (66) took fourth on seven-under. Advertisement Wong's 10-under-par 203 aggregate (67, 66 and 70) was the lowest 54-hole total in the championship's history, and made her the youngest champion since the Girls' U16 Amateur was created in 2018.

International Series Macau: route back to Open Championship adds incentive for Garcia

Making this week's International Series Macau part of qualifying for the Open Championship in July was just the beginning of LIV Golf players being handed greater opportunities to play in the four majors, Sergio Garcia said on Wednesday. Advertisement While Garcia believed the R&A's decision to put three spots up for grabs at Macau Golf and Country Club highlighted the growing strength of the Asian Tour, he also saw it as recognition that things within the game had to change. With lifetime admission to the Masters after winning in 2017, and an invitation to this year's PGA Championship, Garcia has two majors on his schedule, but a return to the Open, and its US counterpart, has been complicated by the lack of world ranking points for LIV events. 'We have the strongest league in the world, you see the quality of players we have in LIV and in our team,' Garcia, the Fireballs captain, said. 'The majors want to have the best players possible competing in their events. Patrick Reed (left) and Sergio Garcia speak at Macau Golf and Country Club on Wednesday.
