Young Swindon Harriers runner 'couldn't believe' England Indoor silver medal
Jesse Bryant could not believe that he managed to win a silver medal in the under-15s England Athletics Indoor Championships in Sheffield.
The young Swindon Harriers athlete was competing in the 800 metres at the event which saw all of the country's brightest track and field prospects competing.
Bryant said: 'It was only my third race indoors and I didn't expect that. I had hoped to win it but I'm pretty chuffed to finish second.'
The 14-year-old's decision to focus on the indoors has certainly paid off handsomely and coach John Dill said Bryant's success is well deserved.
Dill said: 'It was great for Jesse to pick up a medal.
'He is running decent times considering it is only February. He is working hard and all set for a good summer outdoors.'
Bryant confirmed he will race once more over 800 metres next week when he hopes to improve his personal best time of 2:06.91 that he set in Sheffield at the weekend.
But, as Dill outlined, it is the summer season that remains the main focus for the year.
Bryant added: 'My targets for the summer will be time-wise to try and break two minutes for 800 metres and in terms of championships reach the English Schools.'

Jalen Williams: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has similarities to Kobe
Jalen Williams: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has similarities to Kobe Even though the Oklahoma City Thunder lost Game 1 of the NBA Finals in stunning fashion to the Indiana Pacers, 111-110, they are still very much in the series. Many still expect them to win the championship, even though Indiana has proven to be an extremely dangerous team, especially in crunch time and especially on the road. The biggest thing Oklahoma City has going for it, other than perhaps its withering defense, is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, this year's league MVP. He scored 38 points in Game 1, and he will likely have a few big outbursts before this series ends. With Game 2 approaching, he said that Kobe Bryant is probably his favorite player ever and that he hopes to approach the heights the late Los Angeles Lakers legend attained. Teammate Jalen Williams, who is a budding star in his own right, said there are similarities between the games of Gilgeous-Alexander and Bryant. "There are a lot of similarities there… If you are really paying attention to basketball & watch the way he plays… He can pick certain aspects of his game… [And] add his own touch to it." The most striking similarity between the two is the mid-range game. Gilgeous-Alexander seems to have mastered the ability to attack off the dribble, pull up from the mid-range area and nail jumpers, which was something Bryant made a living off of throughout his 20 seasons in the NBA. Gilgeous-Alexander is also what some may call a free-throw magnet. He attempted 8.8 free throws a game during the regular season and made 89.8% of those attempts, which is even more remarkable when one considers that he's 6-foot-6 and just 195 pounds. Bryant was very adept at tricking defenders into fouling him, and he was also an excellent free throw shooter who had a lifetime mark of 83.7% from the charity stripe. Of course, the best way Gilgeous-Alexander can become more similar to Bryant is to win an NBA championship. It was something Bryant did five times with the Lakers.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander talks about his admiration for Kobe Bryant
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander talks about his admiration for Kobe Bryant Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder was named the NBA MVP for this season recently, and he led the league in scoring with an average of 32.7 points a game during the regular season. He has continued his outstanding play during the playoffs, and he's now playing for his first world championship. His Thunder trail the Indiana Pacers 1-0 in the NBA Finals after blowing a double-digit fourth-quarter lead in Game 1. But he still produced 38 points in Game 1 to help his team's cause. Like plenty of players in recent years, Gilgeous-Alexander looks up to late Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. He told the media that Bryant is probably his favorite player ever, and that he hopes to approach Bryant's level of greatness. "That's probably my favorite player of all time," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "I never got the chance to meet him… but not only me, for kids all across the world, his influence has gone through the roof and his legacy will be remembered forever because of the competitor and the basketball player that he was. Hopefully I'm somewhere close to that as a basketball player one day. But he was a special talent, special person, and God rest his soul." Bryant, of course, drove the Lakers to five NBA championships and won two finals MVPs during his 20-year career. He is considered arguably the greatest closer in league history, and he produced numerous memorable moments in crunch time, especially in big games. Oklahoma City will need a few memorable moments like that from Gilgeous-Alexander if it is to bring home its first championship since 1979 when the franchise was known as the Seattle SuperSonics.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander calls Kobe Bryant his favorite basketball player ever
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander calls Kobe Bryant his favorite basketball player ever Doing a side-by-side comparison, you can see the similarities between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Kobe Bryant. The pump-fakes. The footwork. The mid-range infatuation. The MVP winner once dared to say Bryant was 'Michael Jordan on steroids.' You can see Gilgeous-Alexander play eerily similar to Bryant. As the Oklahoma City Thunder are in a 0-1 series deficit against the Indiana Pacers in the 2025 NBA Finals, the roster fielded trivia-like questions throughout Saturday's practice. One included Gilgeous-Alexander's admiration for Bryant. He talked about his basketball impact. While they never crossed paths when Bryant was alive until his 2020 death, he's carried his baton as the NBA's best shooting guard with three straight 30-plus point campaigns. "He is probably my favorite player of all time. Never got the chance to meet him, to answer your question," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "Not only me, kids all across the world, his influence has gone through the roof, and it's like I said, he'll be remembered forever because of the competitor and the basketball player he was. Yeah, hopefully somewhere close to that as a basketball player one day. He is a special talent, special person, and God rest his soul." Entering a must-win Game 2, Gilgeous-Alexander will likely need to replicate his 38-point Game 1 performance for the Thunder to inch closer to a championship. The Pacers have proven to be an admirable foil. They won't be a pushover like many expected before the NBA Finals started.
