Darts legend Phil Taylor's new job has him feeling 'like a fish out of water'

Daily Mirror2 days ago

Darts icon Phil Taylor has taken to presenting after waving the oche goodbye this year, but the 64-year-old 16-time champion of the world admits he's still finding his feet
Phil Taylor has admitted he feels like a fish out of water in his new role as a presenter. The 16-time world champion retired from darts in May of this year.
The Power is undoubtedly the greatest player ever to pick up a dart, winning a record 87 major PDC titles, including triumphing at Ally Pally on 16 occasions, the same number of times he's come out on top at the World Matchplay.

At the age of 57, he stepped away from the PDC in 2018 but continued to grace exhibitions. Four years later, he took part in his first competitive event since retirement, the inaugural World Seniors Darts Championship. However, The Power came to terms with the fact that his darting ability was not what it once was, and left the oche behind for good in May.

Taylor's arrows have since been swapped for a microphone. He now prepares to take another stab at being a presenter when he joins the team at the World Seniors Darts Champion of Champions on Sunday, June 29, though he admits he isn't as polished a host as he was an arrowsmith.
"I'm like a fish out of water at the minute, so I'm still learning," said Taylor in the build-up to the World Seniors Darts Bet Goodwin Champion of Champions, live and free on Pluto TV. "I've got to take my hat off to these commentators.
"If it were a football match, I wouldn't have a clue who's passing the ball or playing for which team! I wouldn't even know who's on whose side. It's remarkable what they do.
"Every time I present, I'm learning. I will get used to it, but it's like an apprenticeship, I think. So you've got to do your apprenticeship and learn your job. I'll keep pushing forward and learn. But I am enjoying it.
"There's no pressure, obviously. I haven't got to get up and start practising and make sure I'm getting ready for nighttime and all that kind of thing, so I can just relax and enjoy it."

Taylor appeared briefly on the World Seniors Tour but made the decision to call time on all competitive darts just last month, admitting that he didn't want to disappoint fans who had paid to see him with lacklustre throwing.
"I was really, really looking forward to it. Loved the idea of the Seniors Darts. Enjoyed playing in it. But I couldn't perform like Phil Taylor could perform," he added. "So it broke my heart a little bit.
"My body had changed. I mean, I'm 65 this year. So I was in my 60s. It got harder and harder for me, and I couldn't perform. And people were paying money to come and see me.

"It broke my heart not to perform like I can. And I thought, 'I can't do this anymore. This is not right. If I do something, I have to do it properly.' I'm a bit of a perfectionist.
"People were paying good money to come and see me. Getting taxis, paying prices for whatever they charge for beers and food and this, that and the other. And I can't give them a show. So, no. I'd had my time. It was time to walk away then.
"I haven't even got a set of darts now. Or a dartboard," continued Taylor. "I've got a dartboard in the back room. But it's still in the box. I was so dedicated and everything. But I can't do it now.
"So, I do other things. I see my grandkids a lot more. And the best thing in the world is staying and sleeping in your own bed. Which I'd not done for 30 years and I love it."

Nathan Aspinall overcomes toilet trouble to go close at US Darts Masters

Stockport star flushes out Luke Littler as he overcomes illness to shine in New York Battling Nathan Aspinall joked he got his money's worth out the toilet in his New York hotel room before fighting off illness to land runner-up at the US Darts Masters. The Stockport star was toiling on the eve of tournament and didn't feel his best during an opening night win over Matt Campbell. ‌ However, in typically-gritty style, Aspinall cast aside the issues and flushed the hopes of Luke Littler and Damon Heta down the pan in a searing Saturday night show before losing out in the Final to Luke Humphries. ‌ After the Campbell win, he revealed: 'Full credit to the PDC. I did my media but they kind of gave me the night [Thursday] off and I needed it. "I don't know what I've got food poisoning, 24-hour bug or what. Without being brutal, I've got my money's worth out of my toilet in my hotel room.' Aspinall's triumph over Littler was sensational as he staved off a 109 average from the World Champion and he then defied a 170 checkout from the Aussie to reach the showpiece. Humphries ended the title dream, but Aspinall said: 'I've had a fantastic weekend and I think it's one of the best tournaments I've played in a long time. I played really well in the final and Luke saved his best performance for the last game. "That's why he's World No.1 and the best player in the world. I pushed him all the way but it was a great tournament for me. The crowd were unbelievable again.' ‌ Humphries repaid the compliments from Aspinall following his win and stated: 'He's loved widely around the world because of the nice guy and the amazing person that he really is. "I love sharing the stage with him, he's a credit to the sport and it's lovely to see him playing freely and thoroughly. 'He's had an amazing tournament. I think he was the best player in the US Darts Masters this year, unfortunately, I just managed to nab him in the end to win the title, but when he's at his best, he's very dangerous and he can join the lines of me, Luke and Michael [van Gerwen] at the top of the sport, he's that good.' ‌ As well as his ability, Aspinall has also regularly displayed a compassion for rivals and did so again as he spoke up for Jules van Dongen, the Dutch-American who is suffering from the same horrendous problems with dartitis as almost derailed the Englishman's career. He said: 'If he reaches out to me I'll be there for him. I spoke to Berry van Peer when I started mine, he's been through something worse than me. "I've not seen Jules throw, I don't know what he's going through. I heard he's playing left handed, that's not the answer. "I will speak to him try to put him in the right direction but he's not approached me yet. I sought my own advice, I speak to a hypnotherapy guy. If he sees this interview come and talk to me as I'll help anyone out. I hope he sorts it.'

Luke Humphries going to hospital and will miss tournament after fan injures him

Luke Humphries going to hospital and will miss tournament after fan injures him Luke Humphries was left in agony before he had even thrown a dart at the US Darts Masters - and will now have an X-ray after playing through the pain barrier to win the title Luke Humphries (Image: Darts ) Luke Humphries pushed through intense discomfort to triumph at the US Darts Masters, despite a rocky start to the tournament that saw him injured before his initial game in New York's Madison Square Garden. The reigning world No. 1 had an unfortunate incident during his entrance as he prepared to face Stowe Buntz in the opening round, injuring his thumb when an eager fan accidentally yanked it back. Cool Hand Luke managed to win that match and continued his streak by defeating American Danny Lauby, following which he impressively overpowered Gerwyn Price in the semi-finals with a 7-2 victory. ‌ He then went on to clinch the title against Nathan Aspinall in the final, securing an 8-6 win even though he was still dealing with considerable pain. ‌ Before taking on the final, Humphries expressed his determination to Online Darts, stating: "When I was in the final, I said to my family, 'I'm going to give it everything, if I injure my hand in the final, it doesn't matter.' I tried my best, and thankfully, it was good enough." The darting champion is set to take a short break, with plans to rest for several weeks ahead of his participation in the European Tour's Baltic Sea Open scheduled for mid-July. This event is just before he defends his World Matchplay title, reports the Express. Reflecting on his injury, Humphries described his thumb as particularly swollen, noting the difficulty experienced while playing due to issues with grip. Article continues below He explained, "It's hard to play through; I was struggling with the grip. I couldn't hold my thumb in the same position." Consequently, he will be absent from the forthcoming World Series event in Poland starting this Friday. "I don't want to make it all about that because I've won the title, I don't want the headlines to be about me and an injury. But the guy, when he pulled my hand back, he really hurt it. I'm going to have to go home and get it X-rayed. ‌ "I don't think it's broken because it doesn't hurt to squeeze it. I've got a couple of weeks off now. The next time I play will be in Kiel [at the Baltic Sea Open]." Despite his injury, Humphries was elated to secure victory at such a prestigious venue. He shared: "This is the most iconic venue that we play in and it's really special to win this event. It's one of the top venues in the world and it's one I've always dreamed of winning. When I finally won it tonight, it was an amazing relief. Article continues below "Once I knew I was in a winning position, I started getting nervous - I'm really pleased to win and I'm over the moon. It's another massive event ticked off for me. "I've won World Championships, World Matchplays, Premier Leagues and these big titles and it felt like I'd won another major. That's how big it is. It's very special and you could see my relief at the end. "This was the one on the World Series that I really wanted to win. The crowd have been absolutely amazing this week, and to have my mum and dad here to see me win again means the world to us all."
