2025 Texans offseason roster profile: RB Dameon Pierce
The Houston Texans are officially in offseason mode and we are still weeks away from free agency and the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Over the next few weeks, Texans Wire will break down each player on the roster who is signed through the 2025 season and their potential moving forward.
We will recap their 2024 season, their contract status and what their status is for the coming offseason and 2025 season.
Let's continue to talk about the running back room with a recap of Year 3 for Dameon Pierce.
2024 Dameon Pierce Season
With the arrival of Pro Bowler Joe Mixon from Cincinnati, the days of Pierce as the Texans' top back were over. That doesn't mean his role wasn't essential as the change-of-pace No. 2 option.
When Mixon missed three games with an ankle injury, Pierce and Cam Akers served as the 1-2 option. Pierce was also a key component on special teams as the Texans' primary kickoff returner, where he averaged 25.6 yards per attempt.
2024 Dameon Pierce stats
In 11 games, Pierce rushed for 293 yards on 40 attempts. He scored a pair of long touchdowns against the New England Patriots in Week 6 and the Tennessee Titans in Week 18 while averaging 7.3 yards per attempt.
2025 contract status
Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Pierce will earn $1.1 million as his base salary in 2025. The rest of his $203,000 salary will kick in on March 7.
He has a $1.3 million cap hit in 2025.
Outlook for 2025
Pierce will enter the offseason as the No. 2 back behind Mixon. He will continue in that role, provided he stays healthy, unless he either moves backward in his development or the Texans add another option in free agency or the NFL Draft come April.

Houston Texans RB depth chart after team signs Nick Chubb
Houston Texans RB depth chart after team signs Nick Chubb Show Caption Hide Caption Will Anderson Jr. breaks down upcoming season for Houston Texans Mackenzie Salmon chats with Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. about the upcoming season and his partnership with USAA. Sports Seriously The Houston Texans are expected to sign former Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. But where does Chubb fit on the team's running backs depth chart? Chubb is the second former starter for an AFC North team that the Texans are poaching in two offseasons. Last year, the team traded for former Bengals starter Joe Mixon, who took over the starting gig in Houston. Mixon earned his second career Pro Bowl nod after a season with 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns. The addition of Chubb also means the Texans will face a roster crunch at the running back position soon. Chubb will be the fifth running back on a team that just spent a fourth-round pick on adding depth to the backfield, re-signed Dare Ogunbowale earlier in the offseason and signed Mixon to a three-year extension last year. NICK CHUBB: Veteran expected to sign with Houston Texans pending physical Houston Texans RB depth chart The Texans will have five running backs on their roster once the Chubb signing becomes official. Joe Mixon Nick Chubb Dameon Pierce Woody Marks Dare Ogunbowale Mixon was one of the Texans' biggest offensive acquisitions last offseason. The team traded a seventh-round pick to Cincinnati for the veteran then granted him a three-year, $27 million extension. Mixon immediately took over the top spot in the Texans' backfield and recorded 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns on 245 rush attempts. In 14 games – he missed Weeks 3 through 5 with an ankle injury – he averaged 4.1 yards per carry in 14 games. Chubb is the team's latest acquisition, a late free agency signing as the team prepares for its mandatory veteran minicamp, which starts Tuesday. In eight games during the 2024 season, Chubb compiled 332 yards on 102 rushes (3.3 yards per carry) and three rushing touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 31 yards and added a receiving touchdown as well. The former Brown is coming off of a season-ending broken foot and two straight seasons playing in fewer than 10 games. In 2022, Pierce, a fourth-round rookie, took over the Texans' starting running back role. He went on to rush for 939 yards and four touchdowns on 220 attempts (4.3 yards per carry) but suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 13. After a slow start to the 2023 season and another ankle injury, Pierce was supplanted as the Texans' starter by Devin Singletary, and he remained relegated to the backup role behind Mixon last year. Marks was the Texans' fourth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He's coming off of an excellent final year at USC where he tallied career-high marks with 1,133 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Marks also finished 2024 with 321 receiving yards on 47 catches. Ogunbowale is a more significant contributor to Houston's special teams units than he is on offense, but he still started a game last year on offense and rushed for 112 yards on 30 carries (3.7 average yards per carry). The Texans extended him on a one-year, $1.8 million deal this offseason.

90 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 90?
90 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 90? Who is the G.O.A.T. to wear No. 90 in a Texans' uniform? The Houston Texans are less than 100 days away from kicking off the 2025 season in Los Angeles against the Rams at SoFi Stadium and we're counting down the days until a victory ensues on the west coast. Texans Wire will each day tell you which player has worn the number of the day leading up to kickoff and pick the player who ensured the number best during their time at NRG Stadium. As for today, let's take a look at who has won No. 90 since the inaugural season in 2002. Texans players to wear No. 90 No. 90 currently belongs to Sheldon Rankins, who returned to Houston on a one-year deal after being released by the Cincinnati Bengals earlier this offseason. He was Houston's best interior run defender in 2023 for a unit that finished top 15 in run defense en route to a first AFC South division title since 2019. Rankins nearly signed a long-term deal with the Texans following his 7.5 sack season, but the Bengals offered more. Following a lost season in the AFC North, Rankins hopes to be a long-term member of the Texans' success to close out his career, though Tim Settle is currently wearing his No. 98, so No. 90 will have to do for the upcoming campaign. While Rankins wears No. 90, he's only going to be in for a season, therefore eliminating him from being the best player to don the number. That doesn't mean the jersey hasn't been worn by some talentend prospects over the years. DL Sheldon Rankins (present) DE Ali Gaye (2023) DT Taylor Stallworth (2022) DT Ross Blacklock (2020-2021) LB Javedon Clowney (2014-2018) DL Terrell McClain (2012) DE Mario Williams (2006-2011) DL Jason Davis (2005) DL Terrance Martin (2003) DL Shawn Worthen (2002) Best Player: Mario Williams Clowney was one of the league's best run-stoppers during his five seasons in Houston, but Williams did it all. The NC State product quietly rose up draft boards into the No. 1 spot in 2006 and never looked back. Over his six years, Williams racked up 48 sacks, 85 tackles for loss, 10 forced fumbles and nine pass breakups. While the success carried over to Buffalo, resulting in a six-year contract, Williams helped the Texans become a promising team with realistic expectations. He was also the first star defensively on the line before J.J. Watt arrived in 2011.

Pending Texans signing could have domino effect on Cowboys RB competition
Pending Texans signing could have domino effect on Cowboys RB competition Much to the chagrin of the the Cowboys' fanbase, the Dallas front office has not shown much interest in free agent running back Nick Chubb. Once regarded as the best running back in the game, Chubb's been on the market since the beginning of the 2025 league year in early March, but has yet to latch on to a team. Now that OTAs are concluded, and teams have had a chance to evaluate what they have on their depth chart, there's usually an uptick in activity when it comes to the veteran FA landscape. In that vein, reports have come in that Chubb is ready to land at his new home, and the fourt-time Pro Bowler who is now 29 years old is heading to Texas. More specifically, he's headed to the Houston Texans, according to ESPN's report. And while Cowboys fans may be upset they aren't landing the 56 total touchdown, almost 8,000-yard producer, there could be a silver lining. The Texans depth chart will have Chubb joining Joe Mixon at the top of the things, as well as fourth-round pick Woody Marks from USC. That likely means that at some point this offseaon, Dameon Pierce is going to either be placed on the trade block or released outright, and that's someone who should be of key interest to the Cowboys. Pierce, a 2022 fourth-round pick who totaled over 1,000 yards from scrimmage as a rookie, averaged 7.3 yards a carry in limited backup action in Houston in 2024. He had 40 carries, one of which was for a league-high 92 yard score last season. Even without that jaunt, Pierce averaged over 5.1 yards a carry on his other carries. The 25-year old had a disastrous second season where he averaged just 2.9 yards a carry in his first season of Bobby Slowik's offense, but bounced back in a decreased role. The Cowboys signed Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders in free agency, and drafted University of Texas back Jaydon Blue in the fifth round in April. None of those players should be seen as above reproach as the Cowboys don't have a bell-cow approach to this season. Dallas might not be in a position to outright trade an asset, but a pick swap to acquire him should be considered, and they absolutely should kick the tires if Pierce hits the open market.
