Dutch is a veterinary telehealth platform built to modernize how care is delivered and accessed across the U.S.
With Dutch, the nationwide veterinary telehealth platform he launched in 2021, Spector is building a tech-first challenger to a stubbornly analog industry—one defined by burnout, access gaps, and high costs. His mission is personal: After a $4,000 urgent care bill when his dog ate a few chocolate M&Ms, Spector, who grew up in a low-income Russian immigrant household living on welfare, realized most families wouldn't be able to afford a single $200 vet visit.
"In modest households like the one I grew up in, spending hundreds on a pet's care just isn't an option," he says. "Dutch exists to democratize access—and make it radically more affordable."
This week, Dutch unveiled a suite of AI tools designed to combat one of veterinary medicine's biggest problems: administrative overload. Integrated into Dutch's proprietary EMR and powered by OpenAI and Google Gemini, the system reduces documentation time from 20 minutes to five—enabling vets to see twice as many pets per day.
The AI features span the full care journey: pre-visit summaries, live transcription, treatment plan generation, and personalized product recommendations. It's not just smarter—it's designed to be scalable.
"It's transforming our consults and our teams," says Spector. "And it's just the beginning."
Dutch is now operational in all 50 states, with prescribing capabilities in 34. Since launch, the company has logged over 700,000 virtual visits, expanded into Rx delivery, and treats more than 150 conditions. Memberships start at $15/month and provide unlimited access to licensed vets.
Dutch also recently partnered with Ancestry to launch a DNA-based personalized dog health product, and with PetMeds to help the 50% of pet parents without a primary vet get timely access to prescriptions.

Joe's connection to pet care runs deep—and personal. 'When I was young, our family had a Rottweiler,' he recalls. 'It was a very anxious dog. That was my first experience seeing how much behavioral issues can affect a pet's—and a family's—well-being.'
That early exposure shaped Spector's conviction that understanding a dog's temperament and behavioral predispositions is as essential as treating physical ailments. It's part of why Dutch emphasizes behavioral health, and why its latest tools—like AI-powered care plans and DNA-based trait analysis—aim to give pet parents a fuller picture of their animal's needs.

Dutch, by contrast, has raised $43 million from Forerunner Ventures, Eclipse Ventures, and Bling Capital to build a full-stack, AI-first telehealth platform—including its own EMR, prescription infrastructure, and direct-to-consumer membership model.
"Everyone else is building tools for the old model," says Spector. "We're building the new one."
Dutch's 2025 State of Online Veterinary Care report reveals that:
Veterinarians earn around $120,000 annually, yet most clinics rely heavily on product sales—up to one-third of their revenue. Spector sees Dutch as a more consumer-aligned alternative to the legacy, clinic-first model.
"The vet industry's a cash business built for clinic owners, not for scale," he says.
States like California, Arizona, and Florida have expanded telemedicine access. And in a landmark decision, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of veterinary telemedicine, quipping: 'If it's good for Uncle Bernard, shouldn't it be good for your St. Bernard?'
"Telemedicine doesn't replace in-person care—it expands it," says Spector. "We bring people into the system who otherwise wouldn't go at all."
Veterinary telemedicine revenue is projected to exceed $10 billion by 2030. Dutch's roadmap includes agentic task automation, image-based triage, and exploration of longevity drugs like rapamycin. The platform also aims to alleviate workforce stress, with tools built to reduce—not increase—provider burnout.
Meanwhile, rising care costs are becoming a barrier to pet ownership. A recent Epoch Times article, citing the American Pet Products Association, noted that in 2025, U.S. pet spending will reach $157 billion—with $41.4 billion spent on veterinary care alone. For retirees and low-income families, the financial burden could discourage pet adoption altogether.
Pet care is also a mental health issue. Half of U.S. adults report feeling lonely, and studies show that those who are chronically lonely are 40% more likely to die within four years. The risk rises to 75% for people who are socially isolated.
Owning a dog has been shown to significantly reduce loneliness and social isolation, offering emotional connection, structure, and purpose. Dutch's mission is rooted in making that bond possible—for more people—by providing affordable, ongoing access to care.

"F*ck I can't code without ChatGPT," someone on the r/ChatGPT subreddit raged. "Ok I can but I am too dependent on ChatGPT to do the grunt work lol." In that same thread, one purported teacher got incredibly real about their students' over-reliance on the chatbot — and their own, too. "I'm a professor and I have fifty students in my class," the user shared. "There was an essay due this morning and I received... nine of them! Guess that means that eighty percent of my students are too dependent on GPT to write their own essay. Kind of a fascinating natural experiment." "On the other hand," the teacher continued, "I am really struggling to grade these nine essays on my own." Things were a bit less deep on X, where jokes and GIFs abounded. "ChatGPT is down….. Which means I actually have to type out my own emails at work," an apparent NFT enthusiast tweeted. "Send prayers." "ChatGPT is down," another user posted, alongside a gif of a young man having a meltdown. "How will I answer if someone asks me my name[?]" "I hope ChatGPT stays down forever," another person wrote. "Nothing of human value would be lost." Users on Bluesky, the Twitter expat site, had only vitriol for freaked-out ChatGPT-ers. "ChatGPT is down yet, amazingly, I am somehow still able to write," one self-professed newsletter writer quipped. "Please check on the most annoying people in your life," another joked. Others still pointed out the coincidental timing between the OpenAI outage and the publication of Futurism's investigation into ChatGPT delusions — though we have to admit, it was probably pure happenstance. There's little doubt that the outage resulted, at very least, in some work stoppage for folks who are indeed too reliant upon the bot to operate normally without it. Planners Fear Immigration Crackdowns Will Make Hotel Labor Shortages Worse: Exclusive Survey

The hospitality industry has struggled with a labor shortage since the Covid pandemic. Now, immigration enforcement and an anti-immigrant sentiment are adding a new layer of complexity. An exclusive Skift Meetings survey of U.S. planners shows that they expect to grapple with the effects of Trump-era immigration policies on their events, with growing concern about hotel staffing across the board. More than two-thirds of respondents (72%) said they expect hotel staffing to be affected in 2025–2026 because of immigration policies. Only 13% foresaw no impact. 'Hotel staffing never fully bounced back after the pandemic. We're still experiencing some gaps in service in certain markets and at certain properties,' said Kyle Jordan, director of meetings at the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS). Staffing issues are being felt at more than hotels. 'Challenges extend to other key partners like AV providers and vendors that support our meetings,' said Jordan. 'While it's hard to predict the full impact, I would expect that deportation activity could further strain staffing in some destinations.' Concerns stem not just from general staffing shortages but also the effect of revived immigration enforcement policies. 'The main issue is that for many workers in hotels, while they may be legal immigrants, the feeling toward immigrants in general has turned toxic,' said Mark Phillips, CEO of LamontCo. 'No one wants to live and work in such an environment or put families through it, so over time we will see less available even legal immigrant workforces. It already appears to be happening in several cities.' ICE Raids and Protests Exacerbate Immigration Issues In Los Angeles, several days of protests followed large-scale immigration raids by ICE. Protests have spread to other U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, D.C, and New York City. a'The hospitality industry relies heavily on immigrant labor especially in back-of-house roles like housekeeping, food and beverage service, and maintenance. Stricter immigration enforcement, increased deportations, and general anti-immigration rhetoric have created fear and uncertainty among these workers, not to mention ICE raids, and I-9 audits. This leads some to leave the industry or self-deport, reducing the labor pool, making it even harder for hotels to fill critical positions,' said Robert Kraus, founder of Small Conferences. Kraus added that there are concerns about the future of the H-2B visa program and similar initiatives. 'There's also a worry that H-2B visas and other temporary worker programs will be curtailed plus general apprehension on potential workers to risk coming to the U.S. just to be told they can't enter or later be sent home only after a short amount of time. This could easily limit the number of foreign workers applying, which is critical for meeting seasonal demands of resorts and other hospitality businesses.' Labor shortages have already disrupted event logistics.'In several cases, my groups suffered through multi-hour lunch services because the hotel restaurant kitchen could not keep up with demand,' he said. Legal Compliance Doesn't Eliminate Anxiety Michael Dominguez, president and CEO of ALHI, argues that deportation is not necessarily a direct impact to hotel staffing. 'It has been required by law for any employee to complete an I-9 form, which verifies legal status and requires documentation,' said Dominguez. 'Any company or hotel not doing that is in violation of Section 274A of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1986. Everyone working in a hotel needs documentation, or they are breaking the law.' Still, legal status does not erase worker anxiety, said Melanie Nathan, human rights advocate and executive director of the African Human Rights Coalition. 'I know people who are perfectly legal and who have filled in those I-9's who are too scared to go to work. They are standing back to try and ride out what they feel like is a storm. Some fear they might get picked up in workplaces where there are likely to be raids.' Guest Services and Sales Take a Hit The staffing crunch is also affecting guest experience and hotel revenue. 'Daily housekeeping is no longer a given. There are hotels where it is now every other day or on request,' said Akshar Patel, VP of corporate strategy and development at eShow Event Management Solutions and a hospitality expert. Beyond guest services, the staffing crunch is slowing business development efforts. 'A staffing shortage on the sales side is delaying RFPs,' said Patel. Andrea Milrad Heilweil, VP of sales and marketing at The Hutton Group, agrees. 'I have found that since Covid I have to be much more proactive with follow-up. Between people furloughed, laid off, or leaving the industry altogether, RFP responses, requests for contracts, setting up site visits, and general communication have been delayed.'
