Tripura government orders probe into assault of two school students
The Tripura government has ordered an investigation into an incident of assault of two students at the hostel of the State's first higher education school. The State's Tribal Welfare Minister, Bikash Debbarma, on Monday visited the Umakanta Academy, which was founded in 1890 by King Bir Chandra Manikya, and told the students in the higher classes not to indulge in ragging or physical assault in future. Parents of one of the two assaulted students had lodged a complaint with the West Agartala Police Station against three students in their higher classes. They alleged that the incident of physical assault and verbal abuse of three junior students occurred recently after they refused to get liquor from a marketplace. The school, named after a Bengali Minister of the royal court, Umakanta Das, now has an English branch. The victim students from junior classes are studying in the English medium. The hostel houses only tribal students, and they are given free accommodation and meals. The general school and its English branch, however, are open to all communities. Mr. Debbarma, along with officials, visited the school and hostel to inquire about the allegations first-hand. He said untoward incidents of such nature undermined the legacy of the school, which has produced laurels over the decades. He warned that the government would act strictly should there be a repetition of such an incident. He directed the hostel warden and guards to be vigilant. The Minister said that the incident was now under investigation.

Riding on captain Thomas Rew's brilliant century, England scraped through with a narrow one-wicket win over India in the second Youth ODI to level the five-match series 1-1 in Northampton on Monday. India, who had won the first match by six wickets at Hove on June 27, posted 290 in 49 overs after being asked to bat. England then chased down the target with three balls to spare, reaching 291 for 9 in 49.3 overs. Medium pacer RS Ambrish took four wickets for 80 runs from his 10 overs to raise hopes of an Indian victory but the last English pair of Sebastian Morgan (20 not out) and Alex French (3 not out) survived the final two overs to give their side a win in a see-saw battle. The home side made a shaky start in their run chase with opener BJ Dawkins (7) back in the dressing room in the second over at team score of just seven. They slumped to 46 for 2 and then to 47 for 3 in the 12th over with Ambrish taking the wickets of Ben Mayes (27) and Isaac Mohammed (11) in quick succession. But Rew (131 off 89 balls) and Rocky Flintoff (39) resurrected the England innings with a 123-run stand for the fourth wicket before the latter got out off Kanishk Chouhan in the 33rd over. Rew, who hit 16 fours and six sixes in his masterly innings, fell in the 40th over off the bowling of Henil Patel and that led to a batting collapse as England were reduced to 254 for 8 by the 46th over. England needed 20 runs from three overs and 12 from two but they had just two wickets in hand. Alex Green (12) fell in the first ball of the penultimate over, the third victim for Ambrish, and England needed seven runs from the final over with the last pair at the crease. England eventually crossed the line with Morgan hitting a four off the third ball of the final over bowled by Yudhajit Guha. Earlier, asked to bat first, opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi (45), Vihaan Malhotra (49), Rahul Kumar (47), Kanishk Chouhan (45) and Abhigyan Kundu (32) made useful contribution to take India to 290 from 49 overs. This was after opener and captain Ayush Mhatre was dismissed for a duck off the first ball of the innings. However, India recovered from that jolt with the other top and middle-order batters coming good. Suryavanshi was among the runs for the second time as he had also made 48 in India's comprehensive win in the first match. For England, AM French was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/71 from his 10 overs while Jack Home (3/63) and Alex Green (3/50) were among the wickets. Govt reviews security, crowd management measures in Puri to ensure devotee safety
Bhubaneswar: In the wake of Sunday's stampede that claimed lives of three devotees outside Gundicha Temple in Puri, state govt has undertaken a comprehensive review of its security and crowd management protocols for the remaining rituals of Rath Yatra, scheduled to conclude on July 8 with Niladri Bije (return of the deities to Jagannath Temple). The chief minister's adviser, Prakash Mishra, who is camping in Puri, expressed his firm commitment to ensuring public safety. "The tragic incident has deeply affected us all, and we are determined to prevent any such occurrences in the future," Mishra, a retired DGP, told reporters on Monday. "We have mobilised our most experienced administrative and police personnel in Puri, working in close coordination with local administration to ensure the remaining festivities proceed without incident," Mishra said. Deputy CM Pravati Parida, who heads the recently constituted ministerial committee overseeing Rath Yatra arrangements, conducted an extensive inspection of Gundicha Temple on Monday. "Every life is precious to us, and we are implementing additional safety measures based on expert recommendations," Parida said. The govt has particularly focused on strengthening arrangements for three major events — Sandhya Darshan (July 4), Bahuda Yatra (July 5) and Suna Besha (July 6), which traditionally attract lakhs of devotees. "We have established multiple emergency response teams, additional entry and exit points, and deployed advanced crowd monitoring systems. Our priority is to ensure the safety of every devotee," a senior police officer said. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, chief administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, said, "As servants of Lord Jagannath, we have completely surrendered to him. We have sought divine guidance and humbly apologised to the Lord for any shortcomings. We are committed to serving the devotees with utmost dedication." The administration has urged pilgrims to cooperate with security personnel and follow designated pathways and timings for darshan. Emergency medical facilities have been strengthened, with additional ambulances and medical teams stationed at strategic locations outside the Gundicha Temple, the birthplace of the sibling deities.
