Rajnath holds bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart
New Delhi, May 5 (UNI) Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday held a bilateral meeting with Minister of Defence of Japan Gen Nakatani here, and both sides condemned terrorism in all its forms and emphasised the need for global cooperation in this regard.
Rajnath condemned Pakistan's state policy of cross-border terrorism against India, perpetrated through state and non-state actors, a Defence Ministry statement said.
He said that such attacks destabilise regional peace and security. Singh called for a unified stand against terrorism and the state-sponsored actions that perpetuate it.
The Japanese Defence Minister expressed his condolences for the tragic terrorist attack which took place in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir on April 22, and offered full support to India.
Both the Ministers reviewed the defence and security pillars of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. They reaffirmed their commitment towards strengthening the bilateral relations and contributing towards regional peace.
The Ministers welcomed the growing diversity and frequency of defence exercises and exchanges between the two countries, and concurred to enhance the scope and complexity of these engagements. Both leaders also agreed to add new dimensions to the robust maritime cooperation between India and Japan.
Rajnath outlined the capability of Indian defence industry particularly its potential to collaborate with the Japanese side on new areas including tank engines and aero engines. He highlighted the capabilities in the areas of maintenance repair and overhaul operations.
Both sides agreed to enhance industry cooperation, including exploring collaboration in niche domains such as automation and Artificial Intelligence. The two Ministers also decided to take forward the cooperation in emerging areas like cyber and space.
India and Japan share a long-term friendship, which has further gained qualitative momentum after the elevation of this collaboration to Special Strategic & Global Partnership in 2014. The dialogue ended with strong commitment by both sides to enhance the bilateral defence cooperation.
Earlier, Gen Nakatani laid a wreath at National War Memorial and paid homage to the fallen heroes. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome with a Tri-Services Guard of Honour prior to the dialogue at Manekshaw Centre.

Chennai: The high-level committee headed by Justice D Murugesan to formulate a State Education Policy (SEP) for Tamil Nadu as a counter to Union govt's National Education Policy (NEP) has recommended banning of all coaching centres and tuition centres running parallel to schools and colleges by individuals and corporate companies in Tamil Nadu. "Schools and colleges may go redundant if proper action is not taken against such nefarious practices. These coaching centres do not come under the purview of any regulatory body of the govt. This is for immediate attention for the govt to act on by creating a regulatory body with appropriate powers," Justice Murugesan's committee said in its recommendations submitted to the state govt on July 1 last year. About two lakh students of Classes XI and XII take coaching for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for MBBS, Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for IITs, and Common Admission Test (CAT). Several schools offer integrated coaching for students for competitive exams from Class VI. It suggests inclusion of material in the school curriculum to address the evil of caste system. "The curriculum should engage with structures of inequality in society and work towards equality. For the social goal of the annihilation of caste, it is imperative that the curriculum addresses the evil in our society," the report said. It proposes a body to regulate deemed to be universities in the state. The body will regulate their admission procedure, ensure a quota for students from within the state, fee structures determined by fee committees, emolument structures for teaching and non-teaching staff, adherence to the reservation policy of the state. It recommends restraining the entry of foreign universities as far as possible, as it poses "a great challenge to the present structure and concept of the universities in the state. " Other SEP recommendations include common age for school entry as five years, no common exams till Class X, continuation of three-year UG and two-year PG courses, introducing four-year degrees as only honours and research degrees, continuing with the two-language formula, changing the selection criteria of school teachers, introducing open book exams, and coming out with a mission for state higher education. SEP is against multiple entry and exits and suggests delaying the academic bank of credits. It also lays more importance on physical education.

We've pushed back 330 illegal foreigners, none of them has returned: Assam CM
Guwahati, June 9 (UNI) Iterating the BJP-led Assam government's stern stand on Bangladeshi citizens entering or living in India illegally, state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday informed the Assembly that the government has pushed back almost 330 such unauthorised foreigners, and none of them has returned. 'It is not possible for them to return, and we are firm on this. And this pushback will be intensified, it will be expedited. The way illegal immigrants have entered the state from Bangladesh and Pakistan, we have to be more proactive to keep the state safe," said Sarma. The Chief Minister was replying to a demand by opposition members, including Congress' Debabrata Saikia and AIUDF's Ashraful Hussain to discuss on the issue of National Register of Citizens (NRC). While raising the issue, Saikia said that while the government has claimed to have pushed back illegal foreigners, some of them again entered Assam, making the government's stand vague on the issue. The Chief Minister further informed the House that the state government has also decided to reinforce the Illegal (Expulsion from Assam) Act 1950. "Under the Illegal Expulsion Act 1950, the District Commissioner, if he is reasonably convinced that a certain individual is a foreigner, can remove that individual without referring a case to the Tribunal," he said. The Chief Minister said the government has taken inspiration from former Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha, who had pushed back illegal immigrants. 'We are taking inspiration from the good works of the Congress,' he said while referring to Chaliha, who was a Congress Chief Minister. "There are two ways to identify illegal immigrants in Assam — one is the Tribunal and the other is the Illegal Expulsion Act 1950. There the word 'push back'is not there, but 'remove' is there," he added Expressing his concern over the issue, the Chief Minister further said that the government has found out almost 2600 Facebook accounts, which were operated from Islamabad, Riyadh and Saudi Arab. "They don't even welcome Rahul Gandhi, but welcome one particular individual from Assam. And I have documents, within the next ten to 12 days I'll provide some information about such accounts to the press,' he said. 'These accounts post only on two occasion, either on Palestine or on Assam, nothing else. I am not saying that the Muslims of Assam are not indigenous. Indigenous is a secular definition. ... Calcutta High Court reserves verdict on petition against state's aid to dismissed non-teaching staff
Kolkata, June 9 (UNI): The Calcutta High Court on Monday reserved its judgment on a petition challenging the West Bengal government's recently introduced scheme that offers monetary assistance to non-teaching staff dismissed following a Supreme Court verdict. Justice Amrita Sinha reserved her decision on the petition, which opposes the state's plan to pay ex-gratia amounts of Rs 25,000 to Group C and Rs 20,000 to Group D employees. During the case hearing, Justice Singh questioned the state as to why the decision to grant the allowance was taken so hastily, without any discussion or scrutiny, following the Supreme Court's verdict. Justice Sinha also raised questions about the allowance amount. Addressing the state, she asked, "Why were the amounts set at Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000? On what basis were these figures determined?" The West Bengal government had launched the scheme to provide temporary financial relief and social security on humanitarian grounds to families affected by the dismissals. The scheme applies to Group C and D non-teaching staff who were recruited through the 2016 selection process conducted by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) and have lost their jobs because of Supreme Court order. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, announcing the ex-gratia payments had said that the aid was a one-time measure aimed at supporting those left jobless after the Supreme Court's decision earlier this month in connection with the cash-for-jobs scam. The crisis began on April 3 when a Supreme Court bench led by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar upheld a Calcutta High Court order dismissing 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff from state-run and aided schools. The apex court concluded that the entire 2016 recruitment process had been tainted by large-scale fraud and manipulation. While the court later allowed secondary school teachers (Classes IX–XII) to return to classrooms temporarily, it made no such concession for Group C and D employees. It also ordered the state to complete a fresh recruitment process by December 31. Meanwhile, the state has filed a review petition against the Supreme Court's ruling. 'Since a review petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, how long will the allowance continue to be paid?,' Justice Sinha asked. She also asked the state whether Group C and Group D employees would keep receiving the allowance without doing any work. UNI XC SSP
