Lidl increases pay in huge investment ahead of Government minimum wage increase
Lidl is set to boost the hourly pay of 28,000 employees next month, exceeding the government's upcoming minimum wage increase.
The supermarket chain announced that its new pay rates, effective in March, will surpass the National Living Wage (NLW) by over 50p.
Entry-level employees across the UK can expect an increase to £12.75 an hour, up from £12.40, with the potential to earn £13.65 with extended service. London employees will see a starting wage of £14 an hour, rising to £14.35 with length of service.
This move precedes the government's scheduled NLW increase to £12.21 in April, up from the current £11.44 for those aged 21 and over.
Lidl's pay rise represents a near-£15 million investment, encompassing increases for salaried workers as well. The company employs over 35,000 people across the UK.
It comes as firms across the retail sector have warned over the cost pressures of soaring staff bills after Labour announced a increase in national insurance contributions (NICs) for employers and minimum wage rise, both from April 1, in its recent Budget.
The NICs increase is designed to help pay for improvements to public services like the NHS, but retailers have criticised it for making it more expensive to hire people.
A number of large firms, including Sainsbury's, axed jobs in the first weeks of 2025, with some of the cuts at the supermarket understood to be linked to the increase in NICs.

The move follows an announcement last month by fellow German discounter Aldi, which said it will raise its minimum hourly rate to £12.71, up from £12.40 an hour currently.
Aldi's employees in and around London will see their hourly pay rise to at least £14, up from £13.65.

Liverpool have already been busy in the summer transfer market with the signing of Jeremie Frimpong and are now closing in on a move for his Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz Liverpool have moved a step closer to sealing a sensational deal for Florian Wirtz, with Bayer Leverkusen having now granted their permission for the attacking midfielder to complete a dream move to Anfield. It was thought that they were set to face competition from Manchester City and Bayern Munich, but they both dropped out of the race for Wirtz's signature. Liverpool have since been locked in negotiations with Leverkusen in an attempt to secure an agreement - and it now appears that they have managed just that. According to reports in Belgium, the Bundesliga side have given Wirtz the 'green light' to complete his move to Anfield. The clubs have agreed a fee of €150m (£126m) for Wirtz's services with personal terms already agreed. Former Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller had recently given an update on talks and suggesting he felt positive that a move would eventually be completed. 'It's no secret that he'd like to go to Liverpool,' Voller told DAZN (via Sport1). 'I know the clubs are negotiating with each other. [But with] transfers like this [it's] often the case that it takes a while until an agreement is finally reached. Of course, in the end, you have the feeling it will go through. 'Florian Wirtz has proven that he is a very, very valuable player. Not only for Bayer Leverkusen but also for the national team. That's why he costs a few euros more.' Meanwhile, Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard also shared his feelings on the Reds' potential deal for Wirtz and appeared to be a big fan. He said: 'There are rumours obviously, Florian Wirtz. 'A big talent who's done fantastic for Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen. He's got a huge future in front of him, so if Liverpool is the place for him, let's hope we can make it happen.' Should a deal be completed, Wirtz would be the second star to swap Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool. Arne Slot 's side also completed a move for fullback Jeremie Frimpong, who was signed for around £35m. Liverpool's business does not appear likely to end there either. The Reds are also closing in on a deal for Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia for £1.5m. They are also hopeful of signing his Hungarian counterpart Milos Kerkes from Bournemouth. Met singers' union gets 5% increase partly funded by $5M appropriation from New York state
The Metropolitan Opera and the union for its soloists and chorus announced a one-year agreement Friday on a contract. The agreement calls for a 2.5% wage increase plus an additional temporary 2.5% hike that followed the labor group's assistance in securing a $5 million appropriation in New York state's budget. The deal between the Met and the American Guild of Musical Artists starts Aug. 1 and runs through July 31, 2026. It must be ratified by the union. AGMA also represents dancers, full-time actors, stage managers, stage directors and choreographers. The Met said AGMA helped lobby the state government for the appropriation, and the additional 2.5% rise will sunset when the deal expires. Two other major Met union deals expire July 31, with Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians, which represents the orchestra, and Local One of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, which represents stagehands.

Fraud culture was 'pervasive' at union, auditors say
There was a "pervasive fraud environment" at one of the UK's largest trade unions, an auditors' report obtained by the BBC has which used to be Labour's biggest donor, also faced an "impairment" - effectively a financial hit - of £53.8m related to the building of a hotel in Birmingham, the report a highly critical 35-page document, auditors BDO said in the 2021 financial year "dominant personalities and a weak control environment facilitated opportunities to commit fraud" at the probe was ordered by Unite's general secretary Sharon Graham shortly after she was elected in 2021. It was presented to the union's ruling executive council by the auditors today. The BDO report says there were "unusual relationships" between former senior staff and Unite's customers and suppliers, as well as a culture that "did not challenge" financial transactions and "failed to ensure" appropriate financial Graham said: "On behalf of Unite's 1.2 million plus members, I promised on my election that I would uncover the truth about historic alleged corruption related to the Birmingham hotel project."This process has quite frankly been an ugly one, where I have endured attacks and smears from those with much to lose, but they have not deterred me."The re-audit is in its final stages and as we move to completion, I will ensure steps are taken so that this can never happen again and we have already started the process of getting our money back." The BBC previously reported that the Serious Fraud Office has launched an investigation into the hotel construction Wales Police and HMRC are investigating historical allegations of fraud, bribery and money laundering linked to the union. Officers raided Unite's London headquarters in April BDO identified "properties, made available to certain staff and senior management that appear to have facilitated a financial upside… with the Union taking on disproportionate risk". It is unclear which staff report said members of the union's executive council "are not required to provide details of all business interests" and other relationships meaning Unite is "unable to determine whether conflicts of interests have occurred". Sharon Graham has committed to tightening governance procedures including those involving expenses, gifts and hospitality.
