Mountainhead: Succession writer Jesse Armstrong's new film takes aim at tech billionaires
Succession writer Jesse Armstrong says he hopes his new film about toxic tech billionaires can be a receptacle for anyone who is "feeling wonky about the world".
Now making his film directorial debut with Mountainhead, starring Steve Carell and Jason Schwartzman, Armstrong has shifted his focus from cut-throat media moguls to a group of billionaire friends meeting up to compare bank balances against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis they appear to have stoked.
Speaking to Sky News about the project, he said: "For a little while I poured some of my anxieties and feelings into it… and I hope it can be a receptacle for other people if they're feeling wonky about the world, maybe this can be somewhere they put some of their anxieties for a while."
Few television writers achieve widespread recognition beyond their work, but Armstrong - the man behind Succession, one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows of the past decade - has become a household name and is today one of the world's hottest properties in high-end drama.
"If there was more self-reflection and self-knowledge, there probably wouldn't be such amenable targets for comedy and satire," he admits.
Long before he gifted viewers with the likes of manipulative Logan Roy and sycophantically ambitious Tom Wambsgans, back in the beginning, there was selfish slacker Jez and the perennially insecure Mark on his breakthrough hit Peep Show.
"I love comedy, you know, it's my way in," he explains. "I think I like it because… the mixture that you get of tragedy and absurdity strikes me as a sort of a true portrayal of the world… and I just like jokes, you know, that's probably the basic reason."
After putting his pen down on the finale of Succession, walking away with 19 Emmys and nine Golden Globes, attention was always going to be drawn to what Armstrong did next.
"I had a couple of other things that I thought I would write first and this kind of snuck up on me as an area of interest," Armstrong says.
"After I'd listened to a bunch of tech podcasts and Ted talks, I sort of needed somewhere to put the tone of voice that was increasingly in my head."
Tapping into the unease surrounding big tech, he wrote, shot and edited Mountainhead in less than six months.
Capturing the audience mood
Explaining why he worked so fast, he said he "wanted to be in the same sort of mood as my audience, if possible".
While he insists there aren't "any direct map-ons" to the billionaire tech moguls, which frequently make headlines in real life, he joked he's "happy… to play a game of 'where did I steal what from who?'" with viewers.
"You know… Elon Musk… I think at least people would see some Mark Zuckerberg and, I don't know, some Sam Altman, there is a bunch of those people in all the [film's] different characters… and we've stolen liberally from the world in terms of the stories we've given them."
Steve Carell is tasked with delivering some of the film's most memorable lines as the satire explores the dynamic between those holding the power and those pulling the strings.
Lack of self-knowledge 'good for comedy'
"People who lack a certain degree of self-knowledge are good for comedy….and if there was more self-reflection and self-knowledge, there probably wouldn't be such amenable targets for comedy and satire.
"You know, living in a gated community and travelling by private jet certainly doesn't help you to understand what life is like for most people."
Armstrong's gift for using humour to savagely dramatic ends is arguably what makes him one of the most sought-after writers working today.
Behind his ability to craft some of the sharpest and scathing dialogue on our screens, he views what he does as more than getting a laugh.
"I do believe in the sort of nobility of the idea, that this is a good way to portray the world because this is how it feels a lot of the time."

This takes the total Rebekah must pay to at least £1,402,266.20. MailOnline understands she has already paid some of the bill, including £800,000 four years ago and £100,000 last year. It emerged that the TV personality is selling her clothes on resale site Vinted as she advertised the items on her Instagram story recently. Rebekah was advertising a range of her colourful swimwear, from luxury brands including Luli Fama, ViX and Good American. One bikini from Luli Fama, where swimwear retails from around £170, was being listed on her page for a fraction of the price at £50. Meanwhile, the ViX bikinis, which would cost around £200 to buy new were being listed for similar price tags. It has emerged that the TV personality is selling her clothes on resale site Vinted as she advertised the items on her Instagram Story Previously breaking her silence in a statement, Coleen insisted 'time and money should have been put to better use' in the scathing message to Rebekah. 'Thanks also to the public and many well wishers who have been in touch with such kind messages. 'This episode is not something I ever wanted in my life however I am thankful for the way my family and team have dealt with it. We look forward to moving on with our lives.' Coleen must also pay Rebekah a total of £135,097.50 in costs under the terms of court orders from 2024, which will be set off against what Rebekah must pay. 'She's looking forward to putting the whole ordeal well and truly behind her. 'Now she's just focusing on the future. Amanda Holden sets pulses racing in a plunging cowl-neck gown for Britain's Got Talent final after she hit back at Ofcom outrage over her racy outfits
Amanda Holden set pulses racing in a plunging cowl-neck gown as she stepped out on stage for the Britain's Got Talent final. The BGT judge, 54, often steals the show with her eye-popping ensembles - and Saturday's final was no different. Amanda showed off her incredible physique in a figure-hugging white satin halterneck gown as she walked out on stage hand-in-hand with fellow judge Alesha Dixon. But in a racy display, Amanda's dress featured a plunging cowl-neckline which saw a glimpse of a silver metal bra lining. She paired the look with elegant white heels and slicked her fair locks into a neat kow bun, sporting a dramatic diamante head piece. Amanda's BGT looks have raised eyebrows and have sparked more than 1,000 Ofcom complaints over the years, but she has passionately hit back at the criticism recently. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Amanda said she works closely with her stylist on creating each look and insisted she loves every single outfit she has worn on the show since its launch in 2007. She told Closer magazine: 'What you see on TV, I really love. 'I'm always asked about the Ofcom complaints, but every outfit on the show is checked before I leave my dressing room, so I'm never worried. 'I think people should have fun with fashion!' It is not the first time Amanda has defended her fashion choices on the talent competition after coming under fire from some viewers. In 2022, she said: 'Fashion is about taking risks. I encourage everyone to have a little fun and be a little daring. I'd be bored playing it safe.' She added that her co-star Alesha Dixon, 46, never cops criticism for her racy outfits, describing the level of complaints as 'bizarre'. The TV star's bold fashion choices on Britain's Got Talent are often a talking point among fans of the series, with Amanda repeatedly forced to hit back at criticism. In one very famous moment, a daring Julien Macdonald gown she wore during the semi-final of BGT in 2017 attracted a staggering 663 Ofcom complaints. The plunging floor-length dress plunged down to the navel, with a cut-out panel that reached the small of her back - but it came under fire when furious viewers deemed it 'inappropriate'. Despite the £11,000 ensemble causing hundreds of viewers to complain to Ofcom, the media regulator decided not to investigate. Ofcom said that while it recognised the dress 'had potential to offend some viewers during what is a family show' - the outfit 'would not have exceeded most viewers' expectations'. In 2019, another of Amanda's dresses on the show sparked nine Ofcom complaints. The judge wore for a sheer dress with spiderweb detailing over the chest, but it was branded 'inappropriate' by viewers, with nine viewers complaining about the look. However, Amanda appeared to see the funny side as she took to Instagram to share a joke about a water bottle sitting on the judges panel acting as a 'nipple cover'. The following night, she sparked more Ofcom complaints as she strutted her stuff in a gown by Lebanese designer Saiid Kobeisy. In another controversy, the regulator said the dress received 34 complaints relating to her dress. During an October 2020 episode, Amanda once again wowed in a plum Suzanne Neville dress with a lace corset top that showed off her toned legs. Of the 896 reported complaints made to Ofcom about the episode, 136 of these were about her dress, with Amanda sharing her 'baffled' reaction to the outrage. 'Just to say this dress got a tiny 136 complaints out of the 896 we apparently got that night,' she said on Instagram at the time.

Doctor Who fans spot a HUGE problem with Billie Piper's reveal as the next Time Lord after the actress issued a cryptic statement about her jaw-dropping return
Doctor Who fans were sent into meltdown on Saturday night, as the jaw-dropping finale saw Billie Piper unveiled as the next incarnation of the Time Lord. However, while her reveal understandably sparked a huge frenzy on social media, others have been quick to spot one key problem with her regeneration, following Ncuti Gatwa 's long-speculated exit from the show. The actress is well-known to longtime Who fans, having previously played The Doctor's companion Rose Tyler, and The Moment interface in the show's 50th Anniversary Special. But in the finale's last seconds, it appeared that Ncuti's Doctor, had regenerated into Billie, with her first words being: 'Oh hello!' Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, some fans were quick to note in the episode's closing credits, Billie was not credited as 'The Doctor,' with it instead simply stating: 'Introducing Billie Piper.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Posts included: 'Lowkey bugging me it just said 'introducing Billie piper', there's definitely something else at play here 'Notice how they're not saying Sixteenth Doctor. Notice how the credits don't even say who she is playing. Odd. 'Note that it said "Introducing Billie Piper" - and not "Introducing Billie Piper as the Doctor". Maybe no one's been appointed, and this is a red herring? 'Don't be fooled. Billie IS NOT the Doctor. Where is "and introducing Billie Piper as The Doctor". 'I haven't missed the Introducing 'Bille Piper' as the Doctor being missing in the credits. Something fishy is going on here. Let me tells ya. 'I just noticed that the regeneration energy never stopped while #BilliePiper said 'Oh Hello' and the credits didn't have her as being introduced as The Doctor, so that's another thread to add to the left hanging list #DoctorWho 'It's very likely NOT Billie Piper as the new Doctor - remember she was only in the credits as "Introducing Billie Piper" where the other two were "The Doctor". Definite bait and switch coming up.' Billie herself then seemed to further fuel the speculation with a cryptic Instagram post, which showed herself posing with a white rose, alongside two throwback snaps of her iconic Who character Rose Tyler. Her post was captioned: 'A rose is a rose is a rose!!!' While initial reactions to the news on X were positive, other die hard fans tuning in had mixed reactions to Saturday's episode. Retired teacher Steve Hatcher, 66, of Ashbourne in Derbyshire, who runs Whoovers - a Doctor Who fan club, told the PA news agency: 'The question in the mind was, is it going to be a regeneration to a new Doctor, which it was, or is it just going to be a regeneration to black and an uncertain future? 'So I'm very relieved that they've found a new Doctor and she's a brilliant actor and I'm sure that'll be terrific, so Doctor Who continues, I would say, on the basis of that, it was a terrific episode.' James Ashway, 27, from Bristol, who helps run the Doctor Who Appreciation Society's magazine, said: 'It was an episode which threw the kitchen sink in terms of returning characters, Jodie Whittaker and obviously now Billie Piper as well as the new Doctor. 'I'm a bit speechless to be honest, there's quite a lot of stuff to take in, but I think it was an interesting episode which pivoted in the middle to tell two different stories, one wrapping up the end of that season and obviously telling Ncuti Gatwa's regeneration as well, so very enjoyable.' However, Brendan Noble, 57, of Middlesbrough, a former English teacher who runs the Sense Sphere YouTube channel said: 'I think we've just had what I would have called EastEnders in space. I am absolutely shocked, irritated, frustrated, people are contacting me now in absolute shock and horror at what's just happened. 'It's lazy writing, hodgepodge of exposition, escapism, nonsense, (Russell T Davies) was throwing every toy from the Doctor Who box at the telly, hoping that some of it would make sense in the way of entertaining you.' Billie will now be the second woman to take on the role as the Time Lord after Jodie Whittaker portrayed the 13th doctor. She replaces Ncuti, who leaves Doctor Who after two seasons in the science-fiction series. The actor's time on the long-running science fiction programme came to an end as The Reality War episode brought this season to a close on Saturday. The two-part season finale saw the Doctor face the Rani in a battle to save the world after making the decision to safe the life of one little girl. As he bid farewell to companion Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu, he said: 'I hope you'll see me again, but not like this.' The finale also saw Whittaker, the 13th doctor, make a guest appearance as Gatwa's Doctor appeared to be travelling through alternate universes. In a statement released by the BBC, Ncuti Gatwa said: 'You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. 'This journey has been one that I will never forget, and a role that will be part of me forever. There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe. 'The fans are truly the final character and beating heart of this show and I can't thank the Whoniverse, and the Whovians, enough for welcoming me in, and making this such a touching experience. 'I've loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have. 'I'll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor.' Reacting to the news Billie said: 'It's no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn't refuse.' After Doctor Who was broadcast, Billie Piper posted on Instagram 'A rose is a rose is a rose !!!' with images from her previous time on the show playing the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler. Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies said: 'What a Doctor! Thank you, Ncuti! 'As his final words say, this has been an absolute joy, and the team in Cardiff and everyone who has worked on this show for the past few years, are so lucky to have been part of Ncuti's great adventure as he shoots off to stratospheric new heights.' The BBC programme is also said to have been paused for an extended break amid criticism about recent plots involving non-binary aliens, incels and even a pregnant male extra-terrestrial. A small number of social media critics have pointed to the diversity of the cast, a drag queen villain, and introduction of transgender and non-binary characters. However, both Davies and Gatwa have strongly dismissed this criticism as from a minority, with Davies telling BBC Radio 2's 20 Secrets From 20 Years: 'Someone always brings up matters of diversity. 'And there are online warriors accusing us of diversity and wokeness and involving messages and issues. 'And I have no time for this. I don't have a second to bear (it). Because what you might call diversity, I just call an open door.' Gatwa told Attitude magazine in 2024 that the hateful comments the sci-fi show has received after casting a black man is 'fascinating, because there's so much energy they're putting into it ... I think they need to go find a hobby is one thing'. During his time, he has had companions in the form of Andor actress Varada Sethu, and former Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson, who played Gatwa's companion Ruby Sunday since the 2023 Christmas episode The Church On Ruby Road. Highlights of his two series have included a Regency-themed episode that saw him have a burgeoning romance with the character Rogue, played by Mindhunter actor Jonathan Groff, the explosive Boom episode and the arrival of the classic Time Lord villain, the Rani.
