Malaysia emerge Asian Cup quadrant champions but fall short in doubles
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia emerged champions of the quadrant event with a straightforward win over Japan but succumbed to Thailand in the doubles final at the sepak takraw Asian Cup today (May 12).
The quadrant final at the Titiwangsa Stadium saw Amirul Zazwan Amir, Muhammad Norfaizzul Abd Razak, Muhammad Shahalril Aiman Halim and Muhammad Afifuddin Mohd Razali playing with the backing of a raucous home crowd.
The Malaysian quartet rarely put a foot wrong as they downed Japan's Toshitaka Naito, Yuki Sato, Ryota Haruhara and Wataru Narawa 15-8, 15-11 to give Malaysia its first gold at the ongoing Asian Cup.
The doubles final saw Noraizat Mohd Nordin and Aidil Aiman Azwawi giving fans plenty to cheer about after taking the opening set relatively easily.
It, however, did not go to plan as Thailand's Boonkoom Tipwong-Sirisak Anuloon held their nerve and made it count on the big points in the second set en route to securing a 7-15, 15-10, 15-12 win for Thailand.
It was sweet revenge for Thailand as they had lost to Malaysia in the doubles final during the World Cup which was also held in Kuala Lumpur last year.
The regu event will begin tomorrow (May 13).

Cklamovski Hails Harimau Malaya's Commitment In 4-0 Win Over Vietnam
SPORTS KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Bernama) -- Harimau Malaya head coach Peter Cklamovski has attributed his players' commitment as the key to their success in crushing Vietnam 4-0 in their second AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers Group match at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium here tonight. The Australian coach, speaking at a post-match press conference, said it also proved the effectiveness of the training his players underwent within a short period. "In the first half, we created a good chance, while the players showed their discipline in the second half. I praise their commitment, and they deserve the win," he said. Cklamovski also cautioned his players not to get carried away by tonight's victory and to remain focused on the Asian Cup qualifiers, admitting there was still room for improvement ahead of the next match. Meanwhile, Vietnam coach Kim Sang Sik conceded to the strength of the Harimau Malaya squad this time, but believed his team still had a chance to seek revenge in the return leg. "This game, I felt Malaysia was very strong, stronger than before. We had expected their performance to be better than before. "First half, we did as planned, but in the second half, we lost two defenders, thus affecting our defence," he said. Malaysia ended an eleven-year winless streak against Vietnam with a 4-0 victory tonight, courtesy of goals from Joao Figueiredo, Rodrigo Holgado, Corbin Ong, and Dion Cools. -- BERNAMA

Heritage-powered Harimau rip apart Vietnam
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia showed they meant business in their Asian Cup campaign by thrashing Vietnam 4-0 in a Group F qualifer at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Friday No one was expecting this kind of score, not when Malaysia had not beaten Vietnam in the last 11 years. But world No 109 Vietnam, the so-called powerhouses of Southeast Asia, were ripped apart by world No 132 Malaysia. The Red Star Warriors were sunk by goals from Joao Figueiredo (49th minute), Rodrigo Holgado (59th), La'vere Corbin Ong (67th) and Dion Cools (88th) Malaysia, who beat Nepal 2-0 in their opening match, now top Group F with two wins. The new-look Harimau Malaya, coached by Peter Cklamovski, saw new heritage players - Figueiredo, Holgado, Jon Irazabal and Facundo Garces earning their first cap for Malaysia, while Imanol Machuca was on the bench. Malaysia listed nine heritage players for the match, including Dion Cools, Corbin Ong, Matthew Davies, Hector Hevel and Nooa Laine. The two 'local boys' in the squad were Arif Aiman Hanapi and goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi. Cklamovski's men started the match brightly but Vietnam managed to play a composed game to frustrate the hosts in front of 61,512 supporters. The tide changed for Malaysia in the 38th minute after Vietnam lost their influential defender Nguyen Thanh Chung due to an injury and they started to lose their composure. The floodgates finally broke in the second half as nervy Vietnam could not stem Malaysia's pressure. The Brazil-born Figuerido broke the deadlock from a deflected effort in the 59th minute and it brought confidence to the Malaysia team. Nippy midfielder Arif Aiman provided the assist for Malaysia's second goal for Holgado in the 59th minute and for the third goal by Corbin in the 67th minute.
