Asian Growth Companies Insiders Are Betting On
As geopolitical tensions and trade-related concerns continue to shape global markets, Asian stocks have experienced mixed outcomes, with China's benchmark indices slightly declining amidst deflationary pressures and Japan's market showing varied returns. In this environment, companies with high insider ownership can be particularly appealing as they often indicate strong confidence from those closest to the business.

Trump Says He'll ‘Probably' Extend TikTok Sale Deadline This Week
President Donald Trump on Tuesday suggested he would 'probably' extend a deadline for ByteDance, TikTok's China-based owners, to divest the social media app before Thursday, marking what would be his third delay after an earlier deal fell through. An order to keep TikTok operational in the U.S. for another 75 days was signed by Trump in April. Trump told reporters on Air Force One he would 'probably' extend a June 19 deadline for ByteDance to divest from TikTok or sell its assets to an American firm, adding, 'Probably have to get China approval, but I think we'll get it.' Another extension would be Trump's third delaying a forced sale or divestment of TikTok, following earlier orders pushing back the deadline on Jan. 20 and April 4, when a deal was reportedly in place for TikTok's operations to be spun off into a new U.S.-based company before Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs derailed the talks. Trump told NBC News last month he would 'like to see [a deal] done' for TikTok, adding he had a 'little sweet spot in my heart' for the social media platform and he would be 'willing to give it [the deadline] an extension' if needed. How long Trump would delay TikTok's deadline. Both extensions in January and April stalled a ban on TikTok by 75 days. Several companies have emerged as potential suitors for TikTok's assets, including Amazon, Oracle and Microsoft. Amazon's bid for TikTok would include the entire company, unnamed people familiar with the offer told the New York Times, though some parties involved in the talks 'do not appear to be taking Amazon's bid seriously.' AppLovin reportedly made an offer for TikTok and spoke with billionaire Steve Wynn about backing the deal, after the company told the Trump administration it could address national security concerns about the app if it held ownership. The White House previously spoke with Oracle about a deal that would give the company oversight of TikTok's U.S. data, Politico reported. Trump has also named Microsoft as a possible buyer while saying he hoped there would be a 'bidding war' for TikTok. Legislation requiring TikTok to sell itself to an American company or be banned in the U.S. was signed under President Joe Biden last year. That law followed growing bipartisan national security concerns about the app in recent years, after reports claimed China relied on TikTok's U.S. data to spy on Americans. Forbes previously reported the app spied on journalists, mishandled advertiser data and stored financial data of some creators in China, though ByteDance has denied claims user privacy was compromised. Trump issued an executive order in January shortly after he took office, though the app briefly went dark for U.S. users.

It's a bad time to launch first-time funds, but that isn't stopping investors
Conventional wisdom is that now is a terrible time for private market investors to launch first-time funds. But that isn't stopping a slew of folks from trying. The big picture: Limited partners are seeing a wave of general partners spinouts, and many expect that the trend will outpace industry consolidation, according to a recent Coller Capital survey. One major reason, they say, is that firms have done a lousy job nurturing homegrown talent. Coller's questionnaire didn't go a level deeper, but it's not too hard to read "tilted fund economics" in that response. Everyone inside a firm knows who brings in the home run deals, and if that rainmaker doesn't get compensated like one. By the numbers: 38% of LP respondents said they expect the number of new managers to increase over the next three to five years, compared to just 33% who say they expect it to decrease. The "increase" cohort was particularly strong among Asia-Pacific respondents (64%). Coller also found that 36% of LPs report the number of spinout funds within their portfolio has increased within the past few years, while only 3% said it's decreased. The majority said it's remained flat. Zoom out: Raising a first-time fund is never easy, and many believe the process has become even more challenging as LPs have sought to shrink their manager rosters — preferring to plug larger amounts into multi-strategy firms. Plus the VC/PE distribution drought that's reduced the amount of available LP capital. On the other hand, LPs also worry that too much mega-fund exposure won't allow them to beat industry benchmarks — which means many are willing to bet on a few emerging managers to provide alpha. What they're saying: "It's like the old phrase: people hate Congress but love their congressperson," a veteran LP tells me. "A lot of people are super risk averse (and liquidity crunched) right now, making emerging funds a challenge to raise, but known quantities de-risk the decision for those who are able to put out capital."

Trump says he'll extend TikTok sale deadline for third time
TikTok is once again getting a last-minute reprieve. President Trump on Tuesday said he'll likely extend the deadline for China-based ByteDance to sell off the short-form video app before it's set to go dark on Thursday, according to Reuters. Trump also told reporters on Air Force One that he believes a deal to sell TikTok will eventually materialize and that Chinese President Xi Jinping will ultimately sign off on it. This will be the third time Trump has extended the TikTok sales deadline. The app briefly went offline in January just before Trump took office, before he pushed the date to April as negotiations around a sale continued to drag on. He signed a second executive order extending the deadline again in April, but that expires Thursday. Trump initially called for a ban on TikTok during his first term in office but changed his stance during the 2024 election, saying that it serves as a bulwark against Meta's (META) social media dominance. Trump has a contentious history with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The chief executive suspended Trump from his platforms following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Trump later threatened to jail Zuckerberg. In January, Meta agreed to pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit Trump filed over the suspension. Trump, however, had a change of heart on the app after crediting it with drawing young voters to his reelection effort. He went on to invite the company's CEO, Shou Zi Chew, to his inauguration alongside other tech leaders, including Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook, Google (GOOG, GOOGL) CEO Sundar Pichai, and Zuckerberg. Congress initially passed and former President Joe Biden signed the law banning TikTok in 2024. The legislation calls for TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to divest itself of the social network. If it doesn't, US cloud providers and app stores are required to stop hosting the service or face steep fines. The Trump administration, however, has assured cloud and app store companies that they will not face fines while the deadline is extended. TikTok previously tried to fight the law banning the app, taking its battle to the Supreme Court. But the court sided with the government's argument that the app could pose a national security threat. US officials have for years argued that the Chinese government could use TikTok to spread propaganda or gather information on US users, which it could then use to blackmail them in the future. Officials haven't publicly shared evidence of the danger. The prospect of a TikTok sale has garnered interest from a number of potential suitors. A group of investors led by billionaire Frank McCourt Jr. has expressed interest in buying the app, as have Microsoft, internet personality Mr. Beast, and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison. The TikTok deadline comes as the US continues to work through a potential trade deal with China following Trump's massive increase, and subsequent pause, on tariffs on goods made in the country. According to the Associated Press, China was prepared to sign off on a TikTok deal but pulled back after Trump unveiled the tariffs in April. Trump has said any sale would likely come after the two countries reach some kind of trade agreement. Email Daniel Howley at dhowley@ Follow him on X/Twitter at @DanielHowley.
