Coyotes euthanized after attacks in two Toronto neighbourhoods

Two coyotes believed to be responsible for attacking several dogs in the Liberty Village and Fort York areas have been euthanized, the City of Toronto says.
The municipality said that this 'difficult decision' comes amid a 'continuation of escalated interactions with coyotes' and follows a 'thoughtful and thorough' review that was conducted earlier this year and entailed staff using aversion techniques on coyotes, and educating residents on how to keep themselves and their pets safe.
As part of this effort, the city also hired an independent panel to review its response and recommend next steps.
At the time, the panel said that the culling of coyotes in the community was 'not supported by evidence and is unlikely to produce desired results.'
'While the City successfully supports wildlife in its natural habitat across Toronto, if animal behaviour changes in a way that jeopardizes public safety, then the city must take action to protect residents. This has been done as a last resort after all options were exhausted,' it said in a news release issued Tuesday.
The city went on to say that Toronto Animal Services has confirmed that one coyote in the area was responsible for 'multiple negative encounters' and that its mate was 'present during some encounters.'
'This mated pair were humanely euthanized over the past few days following all provincial protocols and regulations. A third coyote has left the area, possibly due to increased aversion activities, which are unpleasant and unwelcoming to coyotes,' it said.

Hanover hit-and-run suspect vehicle found burnt: HPS
Hanover police have recovered the vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run earlier in the week. Police recovered a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser. Officers said it was destroyed by fire in a bush lot on Sideroad 25 just north of Morry's Trailer Sales, in the former Brant Township. The Hanover Police Service is asking anyone who saw the smoke, the vehicle, or anyone in the area on Wednesday evening around 5:20 p.m., shortly after the collision. Video surveillance is also wanted. You are asked to look for the PT Cruiser from Concession 4 to Morry's Trailer Sales on Sideroad 25 between 5:25 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. in your footage. The suspect is described as a white man in his early 30s, wearing a dark coloured baseball hat and was picked up by a vehicle on Bruce Road 4 near Davis Hill Nursery in the same timeframe. Anyone who saw the suspect is also asked to contact police. The registered owner of the involved car has been interviewed and is cooperating with the investigation. 'Although this person was the registered owner, they have never had care and control of this PT Cruiser since it was purchased,' police confirmed. Officers are thanking the public for their help with this investigation. The driver is encouraged to surrender to Hanover Police. Police added if anyone is helping the suspect in anyway, could be prosecuted criminally.

Winnipeg police arrest five people after gun pointed at passing cars

On June 12 just after 8:30 a.m., police said a man was seen pointing a handgun at passing cars near Burrows Avenue and McKenzie Street. He then ran inside a private residence in the 600 block of Alfred Avenue, according to police. Patrol officers along with the tactical support team and the remotely piloted aircraft systems unit found five people within the residence, who were safely arrested. A search warrant was executed, and with help from the firearms investigation and enforcement unit, a 12-gauge shotgun, a pellet gun, 'a large quantity of ammunition,' 'various firearms components,' and body armour were seized. Police said three of the arrested individuals were held in custody, who have all been charged with multiple firearms-related offences. A 35-year-old man and 36-year-old woman were also charged with firearms offences and were released on undertakings.
