THE HISTORY OF PENNEYS
THE Penneys brand grew from humble beginnings on Dublin's Mary Street, where it opened its first store in 1969.
Known as
Penneys branched into the UK in 1973 with its first store opening in Derby. The UK now has 191 Primark stores in total.
However, the Penneys name could not travel to Britain as the American retailer JC Penney had the right to use the name in the region.
And in 2006, the expansion into Europe began with an opening in Spain, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France and Italy.
Primark went Stateside for the first time in September 2015, with the opening of a store in Boston. There are now 27 stores in America with branches in Florida, Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The retailer's opened its largest store in Birmingham in 2019.
It spans five floors and features Primark's biggest beauty studio to date, a barbers and three restaurants.

Will Ferrell ‘excited' to bring Eurovision musical to Broadway
Will Ferrell has said he is 'excited' to bring a musical version of the Eurovision Song Contest to Broadway. The American actor, 57, is basing the project on his Netflix movie, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga, which he starred in opposite Canadian actress Rachel McAdams and British actor Dan Stevens. 'We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway,' said Ferrell. 'The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.' Ferrell starred opposite Canadian actress Rachel McAdams, pictured, in the Netflix movie (Ian West/PA) The production will feature a book by Ferrell, Harper Steele, who both co-wrote the original film and were in the documentary Will & Harper together, and Anthony King, a TV and Broadway writer. Music will come from Savan Kotecha, who was behind the songs for the Netflix movie, and will be directed by Alex Timbers. 'Will Ferrell and Harper Steele are my comedy heroes,' Timbers, a Tony award-winning director, said. 'And when I first saw their joyful movie Eurovision during the pandemic, it buoyed spirits during a very dark time. 'With this stage adaptation, I can't wait to bring that same mix of heart, spectacle, irreverence, and awe to audiences across the world.' In the 2020 movie, The Notebook actress McAdams, an Oscar nominee, and Elf star Ferrell play Icelandic musicians Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdottir who are competing at Eurovision. JJ from Austria won Eurovision 2025 (AP Photo/Denes Erdos) It was nominated for a best original song Academy Award for Husavik (My Hometown) written by Kotecha, Fat Max Gsus, and Rickard Goransson. Eurovision director Martin Green, from the organising group, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), said: 'This is a stellar team for what I am sure will be an equally stellar adaption of a film the world loved. 'Our aim always is to bring the joy of the Eurovision Song Contest to more people globally – especially as we approach our 70th edition in 2026.' Last month, the 2025 winner of Eurovision was crowned as 24-year-old opera singer JJ from Austria, who entered with the dramatic Wasted Love. Netflix has previously turned its popular science fiction show Stranger Things into a play in the West End called Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which serves as a prequel to the series.

Trailer drops for new romantic comedy featuring Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie
It traces the chance meeting of David (Colin Farrell) and Sarah (Margot Robbie), single strangers, who meet at a mutual friend's wedding. "It's funny how the most beautiful places make you feel the most alone,' Farrell's character says to Robbie at the wedding, as seen in the trailer. She replies by saying: 'Maybe it depends on who you are with.' Both believe they cannot or will not be loved and choose to head on a 'big, bold, and beautiful journey' facilitated through a magical GPS. After the wedding, David and Sarah, brought together unintentionally by their car's GPS systems, take a road trip down memory lane, accessed through magical doors, where they relive all of their past failed relationships. The trailer shows both Farrell and Robbie visiting Farrell's high school, in a moment when he told a girl that he loved her but she does not reciprocate. "It feels just like it felt back then,' Farrell's character says to Robbie. Her character goes back to visit her mother, who she said she misses. It has been described as a 'funny, fantastical, sweeping adventure' where they get to re-live important moments from their respective pasts. Audiences will learn how they got to where they are in the present and 'possibly getting a chance to alter their futures'. The film, which releases in Irish cinemas on September 19, also features American star Kevin Kline and English actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It was written by Seth Reiss, also known for the 2022 movie The Menu, which stars Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor Joy and Nicholas Hoult. The rom-com is directed by Kogonada, who is known for Columbus (2017), After Yang (2021) and Pachinko (2022). Dubliner Farrell is is just off the back of playing a mobster in HBO's The Penguin which won him the IFTA Award for Lead Actor in a Drama. He is currently working on psychological thriller The Ballad of a Small Player opposite Tilda Swinton. Robbie is also starring in gothic psychological drama Wuthering Heights alongside Jacob Elordi, due to be released next year.

GAZE Festival previews 33rd year of queer cinema gems
The GAZE LGBTQIA Film Festival 2025 returns to Dublin this summer with a vibrant lineup of feature films and shorts that celebrate queer storytelling and culture. Taking place from 29 July to 4 August at the Light House Cinema and the Irish Film Institute in Dublin, the festival is set to mark its 33rd edition with an exciting programme. Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror will make its Irish premiere at the festival. Directed and produced by Linus O'Brien - son of Rocky Horror creator Richard O'Brien - this 2025 American documentary pays tribute to the enduring legacy of the iconic 1975 cult musical. Documentary, I'm Your Venus, explores the life and legacy of the late Venus Xtravaganza, beloved star of Paris is Burning. Decades after her tragic murder, the film reunites Venus' biological and ballroom families in a powerful effort to reopen the case and seek justice for her long-unsolved death. Lesbian Space Princess is a brilliant showcase of queer animation at its most imaginative. This Australian absurdist animated comedy invites you on a wild interstellar adventure, as the fearless space princess embarks on a mission to rescue her bounty hunter ex-girlfriend. Closing the festival is Dreams In Nightmares a 2024 internationally co-produced dramedy that blends humour and hope to imagine vibrant queer futures in the face of rising anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment. Written, directed, and produced by Shatara Michelle Ford, the film follows three queer women on an emotional, and often hilarious road trip through a deeply divided Trump-era America. The full programme will be announced at GAZE's launch taking place at the Irish Film Institute on 24 June, during Pride Week. The event will also feature a special preview screening of Hot Milk, a bold and evocative adaptation of Deborah Levy's acclaimed novel.
