'Disturbing trend': Centre flags low enrolment in Telangana government schools
HYDERABAD: The Union government has raised concerns over the declining enrolment in government schools in Telangana. During a recent Project Approval Board (PAB) meeting of the Samagra Shiksha Scheme, the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education (MoE), noted that despite substantial funding and expenditure, students continue to move away from government schools, a trend it described as disturbing. The Centre urged the state government to conduct a thorough analysis of the underlying causes and take corrective measures to reverse this trend. The Union government pointed out that government schools account for only 38.11% (27.8 lakh) of the total enrolment, compared to 60.75% (44.31 lakh) in private schools. Data from 2018–19 to 2023–24, excluding the Covid-affected year of 2021–22, shows a steady rise in private school enrolments. Telangana has a total of 41,901 schools, of which 30,022 (70%) are government-run and 12,126 (28.26%) are private-run. The PAB minutes further revealed that in 2023–24, the number of schools with zero enrolment increased compared to the previous year.

Contribute now New Delhi: Despite the Union government's consistent efforts to underplay the primacy of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, a report by Indian Express finds that the Ministry of Rural Development has sought an increased outlay – of Rs 5.23 lakh crore – for the scheme for five years until 2029-30. The report makes public findings from the rural development ministry's May 15 proposal to the Expenditure Finance Committee, that functions under the finance ministry and appraises all government schemes and projects. The report says that the outlay for five years till 2029-2030 is nearly 12% higher than the Union government's release of Rs 4.68 lakh crore for MGNREGS during the previous five financial years, from 2020-2021 to 2024-2025. In the Union Budget 2025, the Narendra Modi government allocated Rs 86,000 crore to the United Progressive Alliance-era scheme – the same amount as what was spent on the scheme as per the Revised Estimate of 2024-2025. Rs 86,000 crore is also the exact amount that was promised in the Union Budget of 2024-25, presented in July, 2024, after the National Democratic Government came back to power. The Wire has reported earlier how in an indication of fresh economic strain in rural India, demand for unskilled work under the MGNREGS has seen an increase in April and May this year, according to the data from the same rural development ministry. As many as 20.12 million rural households were among those who sought employment under the scheme in April. The figure slightly increased to 20.37 million in May, till the 18th of the month. The Express report notes that release of funds under the scheme had peaked at Rs 1,09,810 crore in 2020-21, the first full year after COVID-19 outbreak. A record 7.55 crore rural families availed themselves of the scheme. The report also quoted sources in the government as having said that the EFC appraisal and approval is part of government's exercise to evaluate and approve its schemes for the next Finance Commission cycle. The MGNREGS is backed by law and therefore the EFC approval is 'just a formality,' the report said. The ministry's outlay is also subject to change, sources told the paper. Glitch in the Chinese system: Treasury Secy Scott Bessent drops surprising remark over ‘possible' Xi-Trump talk
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently appeared on a CBS interview on June 1, which started off with his take on the recent US-China trade scenario. The "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan" show saw Bessent claim that President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will have a conversation soon amid the tariff standoff. Bessent claimed that he is "confident" that the details of a US-China trade agreement "will be ironed out" when they converse. During the show, Bessent stated that China is withholding its manufactured products from the rest of the world, which is otherwise necessary for the industrial supply chains of India, Europe, and other regions. This, according to him, is not what a reliable partner does. He also highlighted China's activities during COVID, saying, 'I think that what Secretary Hegseth did was remind everyone that during COVID, China was an unreliable partner, and what we are trying to do is to de-risk. We do not want to decouple, but we do need to de-risk, as we saw during COVID, whether it was with semiconductors, medicines, the other products we are in the process of de-risking.' Regarding the 'possible' talk between China and US, Bessent was quoted as saying, "Well, we will see what the consequences are. I am confident that when President Trump and Party Chairman Xi have a call, this will be ironed out. So- but the fact that they are withholding some of the products that they agreed to release during our agreement- maybe it's a glitch in the Chinese system, maybe it's intentional. We'll see after the President speaks with the Party chairman." When asked by show host Margaret Brennan about the fact that President Trump has said a few times that he was going to speak to President Xi, but no such conversation has happened so far, Bennett responded, saying, 'I believe we'll see something very soon, Margaret.' "I just got back from China last week. They're not scared, folks. This notion they're gonna come bow to America. I wouldn't count on that. And when they have a problem, they put 100,000 engineers on it, and they've been preparing for this for years," Bennett also said when asked further on Beijing.
