
Strong earthquake in central Myanmar, panic in Bangkok
An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 struck Myanmar, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said on Friday, while hundreds of people poured out of buildings in the Thai capital Bangkok after the tremors.
There was no immediate word from Myanmar on damage after the quake, which GFZ said was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles) with the epicenter near the city of Mandalay.
Witnesses in Bangkok said people ran out onto the streets in panic and water splashed out of swimming pools.
Tremors from the strong earthquake were also felt in China's southwest Yunnan province, according to Beijing's quake agency.
The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) said the jolt measured magnitude 7.9, according to the Xinhua news agency, with a social media post by CENC saying 'tremors were felt in Yunnan.'

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 shook Istanbul on Wednesday, Türkiye's AFAD disaster agency said, one of the strongest quakes to strike the city of 16 million in recent years. There were no immediate reports of damage, but people evacuated buildings as the quake hit and shook the city, located on the European and Asian shores of the Bosphorus strait.
