More than 200 prisoners break out of Pakistani prison during an earthquake
A prisoner has been killed and three security guards after hundreds of inmates escaped from a prison in Pakistan.
216 inmates escaped from Malir jail in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi before dawn on Tuesday, while they were being temporarily moved out of their cells for safety reasons during an earthquake.
Pakistan officials said during the relocation a group of inmates started attacking the guards, seized their weapons, opened fire and fled.
Police said the situation was now under control and there were ongoing raids in the region to find those still on the run.
Senior police official Kashif Abbasi said at least 78 prisoners had since been recaptured in the capital of Sindh province.
He said none of the escapees had been convicted or accused of being a militant.
The region has been hit with several mild earthquakes over the past day, ranging in size from 2.6 to 3.4 in magnitude.
Prison security has been ramped up in Pakistan since 2013 when the Pakistani Taliban freed more than 200 inmates in an attack on a prison in the northwestern district of Dera Ismail Khan.

Part of his worries stemmed from the carbon fiber design of the submersible, which he said wasn't safe for deep dives. He also filed a federal whistleblower complaint and lawsuit to try and get the warning out to the public. The underwater vessel disappeared June 18 after officials said it suffered a " catastrophic implosion." OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, 61, who was piloting the Titan; deep sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who was experienced in visiting the Titanic wreck site; British tycoon Hamish Harding, 58; and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his son, Suleman, 19, were killed. OceanGate said in a statement Thursday: "We again offer our deepest condolences to the families of those who died on June 18, 2023, and to all those impacted by the tragedy." The company said it "permanently wound down its operations" after the tragedy and is fully cooperating with investigations being conducted by the Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board.

More than two hundred people attended a funeral prayer service at Bilal Mosque in Pontcanna to pay their respects to Taha Soomro, of Grangetown, who police said suffered a medical episode on Friday, May 23. There was a sombre and reverent atmosphere as a steady flow of people entered the mosque for the service on Thursday afternoon (May 5). Shortly after 2pm, a faint hum of call to prayer could be heard as the service began. People of all ages were in attendance at the service, including many young men and women. They greeted one another outside with handshakes and hugs. South Wales Police were called to Barry pleasure park just before 5pm on Friday May 23 but in a statement the force said that "despite efforts of emergency services, Taha died at the scene". Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause and circumstances of the teenager's death. A 15-year-old boy from Cardiff was arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with Taha's death. They were held in police custody before being released on police bail as officers conduct further enquiries. A spokesperson for South Wales Police said in the latest update from the force on May 25: "We are continuing to investigate the death of 16-year-old Taha Soomro at Barry Island Pleasure Park. "A 15-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of assault is now on bail pending further enquiries. Taha's family has been updated and continue to be supported. "Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause and circumstances of Taha's death.
