Miss SA Mia Le Roux addresses online conversation about her experience with music

Miss South Africa 2024 Mia Le Roux attended the Metro FM Music Awards, where she made a red-carpet appearance.
During her interview on SABC1's black carpet program for the music awards, she was asked by presenter Mpumi Mlambo who's her favourite artist. Her answer and the question itself opened up a huge online discussion.
In a statement, Le Roux addressed the online talk that has been happening since the awards took place on May 3, revealing that this is one of her 'biggest insecurities.'
'Within the deaf community, everyone experiences music differently. Some perform entire songs in South African Sign Language (SASL). Others feel music through rhythm and vibration.
'Some dance by counting beats. There are Deaf musicians and artists which I am in awe of, because I can imagine how much dedication it takes.'
Le Roux, responded when asked by Mlambo, "Within the music industry I don't have a favourite South African artists as I am deaf, so I do not listen to music."
Le Roux is the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa. She was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the age of one and has a cochlear implant to help her perceive sound.
In her statement, she went on to explain her unique relationship with music. 'I use cochlear implants which help me perceive sound - but I have nothing to compare it to, as I'll never truly know what someone without a device hears.
'Growing up music was always something I tried to connect with - especially because of my family. I remember my dad playing 'Love Gets Old' by Wouter Kellerman.
'I could see how it moved him. That memory stayed with me - not just because of the sound, but because of the emotion and meaning behind it. That's what I connected to.'

An old clip of Mmusi Maimane performing on stage as a kwaito artist has gone viral. In it, the politician, ordained minister, and now PhD graduate rapped and bopped to his catchy song, Mjita wako kasi. On the X app, user @Sentletse posted a clip of Mmusi Maimane's stint as a music artist. 'Did you all know that Dr Maimane (Mjita wako kasi) was an aspiring kwaito star?', the popular account posted. In the clip, the 45-year-old performed his song on a SABC 1 dance show. Sporting a gold chain, a floppy hat, and a toothpick in his mouth, Maimane hopped and bopped alongside his group of dancers. Responding to the clip, Mmusi jokingly posted: 'I was moving, cooking, and good-looking. 'I think I need to do a remix with Booga Luv for this December'. Mmusi Maimane has since ditched his forest of superstardom as an entertainer to take up politics instead. After resigning as leader of the Democratic Alliance in 2019, Mmusi founded the civic organisation One South Africa Movement the following year. In 2022, he established his own political party, Build One South Africa (BOSA). Apart from politics – and music – Mmusi Maimaine is also an ordained minister and an elder at the Liberty Church in Johannesburg. The father of three – who has a masters in theology – also regularly preaches at churches around South Africa and around the world. He said of his choice of career: 'Politics is about two things: it's about government and it's about influence…the only way they (Christians) will become in charge of the nation is if the nation votes for them. Open Chats Podcast faces backlash over racial comments
The hosts of Open Chats Podcast are facing backlash after a clip from a recent episode went viral for offensive content. In the clip, hosts Mthokozisi, Lefa, Busiswa, and Sonwabile are heard making disturbing remarks about members of the coloured community. Social media erupted in anger following the recent remarks made by the Open Chats Podcast hosts. Many users labelled the comments as offensive, racist, and highly disrespectful toward a significant community in South Africa. The now-deleted viral episode features several wild claims, including derogatory generalisations about coloured families and their personal relationships. One of the hosts claimed that 'Apparently Coloureds chow (have sex with) each other,' sparking immediate backlash across platforms. Another co-host responded, 'I do believe that because Coloureds are crazy.' They continued to co-sign each other, suggesting that coloured people are mentally unstable. The episode has angered many online, with some demanding an apology and others calling for the podcast's immediate removal from all platforms. @LeratoPillayZA wrote, 'I stand with Gayton on the Open Chats issue. If Blacks are offensive towards Indians, coloureds or whites: THEY SHOULD ACCOUNT. We can't tolerate Racism from any group. They have to apologise and own up to their wrongdoing.' @enzosabela wrote, 'People have been complaining about the Open Chats podcast for ages, and now they're getting heat for the things they say.
