US-China trade deal: After Donald Trump, China says details of deal ‘confirmed'; adds America to 'cancel series of restrictive measures'

Earlier in the day, Trump said that the United States and China have reached a trade agreement. (AI image) US-China trade deal: Soon after US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal, China has also confirmed that details have been finalized. China also said that United States will 'cancel a series of restrictive measures'. Earlier in the day, Trump said that the United States and China have reached a trade agreement. He also indicated an anticipated deal with India. According to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's interview with Bloomberg TV, the agreement was finalized earlier this week, though specific details were not disclosed. "We just signed with China the other day," Trump said. Lutnick confirmed the agreement was "signed and sealed" two days prior. US-China Trade Deal This development follows initial discussions in Geneva in early May, where both nations agreed to delay substantial tariff increases that threatened bilateral trade. Subsequent talks in London established a negotiation framework, with Trump's mentioned deal appearing to formalise these arrangements. Beijing's export restrictions on rare earths have been a significant point of dispute. The Chinese Commerce Ministry announced Thursday that Beijing was expediting the review process for rare earth export licence applications and had approved several applications that met requirements. Export restrictions on minerals overshadowed tariffs during recent trade talks between Beijing and Washington, following China's implementation of licensing requirements for seven rare earth elements in April. This action potentially threatened to affect production of vehicles, robotics, wind turbines and advanced technological items in the United States and globally. The Geneva accord reached in May required both nations to reduce retaliatory tariff increases implemented during Trump's trade war escalation. However, certain elevated tariffs persist, including Washington's duties related to fentanyl trade and those on aluminium and steel. Chinese manufacturing profits decreased by more than 9 per cent year-over-year in May, with automotive manufacturers experiencing significant losses. The January-May period showed a decline exceeding 1 per cent compared to the previous year. Indian fishermen nabbed Sri Lanka because their rights given up during Emergency: EAM Jaishankar

The issue of Sri Lanka arresting Indian fishermen stems from an agreement during Emergency under which their rights for fishing in some specific areas were given up, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday. The agreement with Sri Lanka would not have been possible if a genuine Parliament functioned at that time, Jaishankar said at an event organised by the BJP Yuva Morcha to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. Big decisions were sometimes taken without any parliamentary debate during the time, he said. "We hear about our fishermen arrested by Sri Lanka. The reason is that an agreement was entered into during Emergency under which the rights of the fishermen for fishing in some sea waters of Sri Lanka was abandoned," Jaishankar said. Had a genuine Parliament functioned at the time, there would have been a debate and this decision would not be accepted, the minister said. Live Events The consequences of this decision are still visible in Tamil Nadu, he added. Jaishankar said the image of India as the oldest, largest democracy in the world took a beating when Emergency was imposed on June 25 1975. He also recalled his own experiences of police raids at hostels of the Jawaharlal Nehru University and his family's links with leaders like George Fernandes. "I heard from my seniors in the foreign service how difficult it was to defend India after the murder of the Constitution and democracy by the imposition of Emergency," he said. In a broadside against the Gandhis, Jaishankar said an Emergency situation arises when the "family" is kept ahead of the country. "Some people keep the copy of Constitution in their pockets but have other feelings in their hearts," he said in a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He said people should be empowered to avoid any situation in the future because an empowered public would never let it happen.

Jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's mother, cousin shot dead in Punjab's Batala

Jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's mother Harjit Kaur, 52, and cousin Karanvir Singh, 29, were shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants on Qadian Road in Batala town of Gurdaspur district on Thursday night, police said. Jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's mother Harjit Kaurand his cousin Karanvir Singh was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants in Batala town of Gurdaspur district on Thursday night. A search is on for the unidentified assailants, who opened fire on the two from close range when they were in an SUV parked outside their rented house in the Civil Lines area at 9.07pm before fleeing, the police said. Bhagwanpuria's rival Davinder Bambiha gang claimed responsibility for the attack via a social media post, stating that Karanvir was the intended target. In an unverified social media post shortly after the attack, a user identifying himself as Dony Bal Manga claimed responsibility, saying he along with Prabh Dasuwal and Kaushal Chaudhary (both from Haryana) had avenged the killing of a member of their gang, Gora Bariar. The post alleged that Harjit Kaur and Karanvir had been managing the criminal operations of Bhagwanpuria. Batala deputy superintendent of police Paramveer Singh said both the victims sustained bullet injuries on the face, chest, and stomach. Harjit Kaur was rushed to the local civil hospital from where she was referred to a hospital in Amritsar, but succumbed to the bullet injuries. Karanvir, who is the son of a Punjab Police assistant sub inspector, was declared dead at the Batala civil hospital. The DSP said a case has been registered and teams have been formed to arrest the killers. 'We are investigating the motive behind the incident,' he said. Harjit Kaur, who belongs to Bhagwanpur village, was elected as the sarpanch during the previous Congress regime. She was active in the Congress but before the Dera Baba Nanak assembly byelections last year, she joined the Aam Aadmi Party. In March, gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria was detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT-NDPS) and shifted from Bathinda central jail to Assam's Silchar jail on the recommendation of the Narcotics Control Bureau. Bhagwanpuria was in Punjab Police custody for singer Sidhu Moosewala's murder in Mansa on May 29, 2022. Moosewala was murdered by the Goldy Brar-Lawrence Bishnoi-Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang to avenge the killing of Youth Akali Dal leader Vikramjit Singh, alias Vicky Middukhera, by the Bambiha gang in Mohali on August 7, 2021. Bhagwanpuria faces 128 criminal cases, including high-profile murders and extortion, besides the Arms Act and 13 under the NDPS Act, since 2012.
