WNBA: No 1 pick Paige Bueckers scores career-high 35 on return from injury

The Guardiana day ago

Satou Sabally had 20 points and nine rebounds, Alyssa Thomas added a double-double in her return and Phoenix Mercury weathered a career game from Paige Bueckers to beat the Dallas Wings 93-80 on Wednesday.
Rookie star Bueckers set season highs with 35 points and five three-pointers after missing the previous four games, three while in the concussion protocol and another because of illness. She added six rebounds and four assists.
The No 1 pick in this year's draft, Bueckers had 22 points in the first half – her previous career high was 21. Her teammates had just 14 points total at the break. She finished 13 of 19 from the field and 5 of 7 from three-point range. Thomas had 11 points and 10 assists in 24 minutes after missing the previous five games with a left calf injury.
Despite her scoring feats, Bueckers said she could have played better.
'I mean I was coming back from a break and I feel like I could have used my voice more, been more disruptive, crashed the glass more,' she said. 'So as I get my wind under me, I'll be better in those areas. But like I said, just trying to contribute in other areas and whatever that looks like on any given night and will try to put my full effort toward that.'
The Mercury led 67-55 on Sabally's three-pointer with 23 seconds left in the third quarter and gradually pulled away. The Wings were never closer than eight points in the final eight minutes. Sabally played her first five seasons in Dallas before being traded to the Mercury in the offseason, and the teams had words and remained on the floor for several minutes after the game ended.
The Wings averaged 85.3 points a game when Bueckers played in the first six and 76.0 points when she was out. Wings leading scorer Arike Ogunbowale missed her first seven field-goal attempts and finished with 10 points on 2-of-10 shooting. She was averaging 16.3 points per game and had 26 points in an 81-65 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday.
The Mercury are 3-2 in Commissioner's Cup play and the Wings are 0-4.

NBA, WNBA extend partnerships with 2K video game

June 13 - The NBA and WNBA agreed in principle to terms for a multi-year global partnership expansion with the 2K video game, the leagues announced on Friday. Also, 2K agreed in principle to terms to extend its relationships with the NBA G League and USA Basketball. "NBA 2K has engaged a new generation of basketball fans in an increasingly digital world," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "By expanding our partnership and creating NBA Take-Two Media, we look forward to building on the incredible success of the NBA 2K franchise." Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two Interactive, said he was happy to continue the partnership with the NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). "I would like to thank Adam Silver, (NBPA executive director) Andre Iguodala, and all our partners at the NBA and NBPA for their continued support and shared vision to empower NBA 2K to become the premier interactive entertainment basketball franchise," Zelnick said. "We are excited to unveil NBA Take-Two Media and look forward to seeing how it will create an entirely new and multi-faceted NBA experience for our communities." That also applies to the WNBA, which saw its stars first appear in NBA 2K20. "2K is where millions of young fans deepen their interest and fall further in love with the game of basketball. That's why this partnership is so important," WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said. "As the WNBA continues to reach new milestones on the court and across fandom, our presence in NBA 2K ensures that our league and athletes are visible, celebrated, and inspiring the next generation of WNBA fans around the world." Terri Carmichael Jackson, the executive director of WNBPA, labeled Friday's news as a defining moment for women's basketball. "Our players continue to raise the bar, and this renewed partnership with 2K ensures their impact is felt not just on the court, but across culture, gaming and the global growth of the sport," she said. "This expansion will elevate the entire league and the women who power it. It's also a recognition of the players' business value and their role in driving the future of the game." Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson and the legendary Vince Carter adorned the covers of the NBA 2K25 series of video games. Tatum was on the cover of the standard edition, Wilson represented the game's WNBA version and Carter served as the face of the Hall of Fame edition. --Field Level Media

Ex-NFL star wide receiver Antonio Brown facing attempted murder charges in Miami shooting

Former NFL player Antonio Brown is facing an attempted murder charge stemming from a shooting that took place during an altercation outside an amateur boxing event in Miami, according to an arrest warrant. Brown, 36, is accused of grabbing a handgun from a security staffer and firing two shots at a man he had gotten into a fistfight with earlier. The victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, told investigators one of the bullets grazed his neck. The warrant does not list an attorney for Brown, an All-Pro wide receiver who last played in the NFL in 2021 for Tampa Bay but spent most of his 12-year career with Pittsburgh. Brown did not respond to messages sent to his social media accounts. The second-degree attempted murder charge carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence and up to a $10,000 fine. It is the latest in a series of legal problems for Brown, who has previously been accused of battery of a moving truck driver, several domestic violence charges, failure to pay child support and other incidents. During a 2021 game with Tampa Bay against the New York Jets, Brown took off his jersey, shoulder pads and gloves and ran off the field, leading to his release by the Buccaneers. After that incident, Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady said people should show some compassion for Brown, who lived at Brady's home during his time in Tampa Bay. 'It's a difficult situation,' Brady said then. 'Everybody should do what they can to help him in ways that he really needs it. We all love him. We care about him deeply. We want to see him be at his best. Unfortunately, it won't be with our team." According to the arrest warrant, Brown attended a celebrity boxing event in Miami on May 16. Police were called to the location after other patrons reported hearing shots fired. Several of them told officers Brown was the shooter, but when he was detained in the parking lot no weapon was found, but two bullet casings were located. Brown was released then because the victim was not found immediately, according to the warrant. Later, investigators learned Nantambu was the victim. Based on surveillance video, the altercation outside the boxing event involving Brown, Nantambu and others was broken up by security staff, one of whom got into a struggle with Brown, the warrant says. 'Mr. Brown appears to retrieve a black firearm from the right hip area' of the security official, the warrant says. 'Cellphone video obtained from social media showed Mr. Brown with the firearm in his hand advancing toward Mr. Nantambu on the outside sidewalk. The video captures two shots which occur as Mr. Brown is within several feed of Mr. Nantambu.' Nantambu identified Brown as the shooter and told investigators he had known Brown since 2022. During his playing career, Brown caught 928 passes for 12,291 yards and 88 touchdowns. He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning the 2021 Super Bowl along with Brady. Brown was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection.

Manchester City may loan out Jack Grealish having received no offers

Manchester City are yet to receive a formal offer for Jack Grealish, with the club potentially demanding about £50m for the forward who cost a then British record £100m in August 2021. Grealish was not in the City squad that arrived in Boca Raton, Florida, on Thursday to prepare for Wednesday's Club World Cup game against Wydad, having been excluded by Pep Guardiola. Grealish has two years remaining on terms that earn him about £300,000 a week. If there are no willing suitors regarding a permanent transfer, City may consider a loan. A temporary move may prove the most practical option for Kyle Walker, who is 35 and has a year on his terms. City's former captain joined Milan in January on loan for the second half of last season but the Italian club have no wish to re-sign him. Fenerbahce have emerged as possible suitors for the full-back. City may move again to strengthen Guardiola's squad this summer, though the club do not expect to do any business during the Club World Cup. Depending on how the team perform in the US, Guardiola may consider a new right-back, with the club possibly reviving interest in Juventus's Andrea Cambiaso. Should there be a considerable offer for Ederson, City may accept this for a goalkeeper who is 32 in August and has a year on his deal. City have invested more than £100m in Tijjani Reijnders, a midfielder, who joined on Wednesday for €55m (£46.6m), the left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri, the goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and the winger Rayan Cherki. The quartet took part in their first training session on Friday at Boca Raton's Lynn University. The session was taken, in part, by Kolo Touré, who has been promoted from the under-18s to be one of Guardiola's assistants for the Club World Cup.
