Investigation advances into Gene Hackman's mysterious death, with update by New Mexico authorities
Mendoza has said the couple may have died up to two weeks before they were discovered on Feb. 26. Hackman's pacemaker last showed activity Feb. 17, nine days before maintenance and security workers showed up at the home and alerted police.
Arakawa was found with an open prescription bottle and pills scattered on the bathroom counter, while Hackman was found in the home's entryway.

Authorities retrieved personal items from the home including a monthly planner and two cellphones that will be analyzed. Medical investigators have been working to establish the cause of their deaths, but toxicology reports often take weeks to complete.
When they were found, the bodies were decomposing with some mummification, a consequence of body type and climate in Santa Fe's especially dry air at an elevation of nearly 7,200 feet (2,200 meters).
Hackman, a Hollywood icon, won two Oscars during a storied career in films including 'The French Connection,' 'Hoosiers' and 'Superman' from the 1960s until his retirement in the early 2000s.
Arakawa, born in Hawaii, studied as a concert pianist, attended the University of Southern California and met Hackman in the mid-1980s while working at a California gym.
The couple's stucco, Pueblo-revival style home sits on a hill in a gated community at the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains. Santa Fe is known as a refuge for celebrities, artists and authors.
Hackman dedicated much of his time in retirement to painting and writing novels far from Hollywood's social circuit. He served for several years on the board of trustees at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, and he and his wife were investors in local businesses.

Gunn hasn't yet cast the role of who'll play Princess Diana of Themyscira. That's a big deal. When Gunn and Safran took over the reigns of DC back in late 2022, they essentially began unplugging from the Zack Snyder created DC universe. One of those projects not to move forward was Patty Jenkins' third Wonder Woman movie which wasn't up to snuff. In addition Gunn said today, that the new 'Wonder Woman's a separate thing' to the already announced Paradise Lost HBO/Max series, which is 'slow moving, but it's moving,' per the Superman and Guardians of the Galaxy franchise filmmaker. Gunn also confirmed what was blurted out by Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav during last month's earnings call; that Superman, Batman, Supergirl and Wonder Woman were lynchpins to Gunn and Safran's DC. 'I think that's accurate, actually,' Gunn told EW. 'I think that he got that from something I said. I wouldn't say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we're dealing with the other two.' The Paradise Lost HBO Max series was first announced by Gunn and Safran when the first unveiled their vision for DC aka 'Gods and Monsters' in early 2023. Set on Wonder Woman's home planet Themyscira, Gunn billed Paradise Lost as 'Game of Thrones with Westeros but with all the inhabitants of Paradise Island.' No announced scribes yet for Paradise Lost. As of August 2023 on a press tour for the Netflix movie Heart of Stone, Gadot exclaimed 'I was invited to a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran [co-chairperson and CEO of DC alongside Gunn] and what they told me, and I'm quoting: 'You're in the best hands. We're going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman— you've got nothing to worry about.' So time will tell.' At the time of her comments, DC told Deadline that Wonder Woman 3 wasn't in the works. After getting her treatment pulled, Jenkins told the press that when it came to the threequel, 'I never walked away. I was open to considering anything asked of me.' Wonder Woman 3 was promptly announced in the wake of the theatrical day-and-date tanking of Wonder Woman 1984, which grossed $170M WW, $47M U.S. when many theaters around the globe were closed. Last year, we excitedly chatted about her taking home a Primetime Emmy Award for her work on The Last of Us and wrapping up her junior year at the University of Southern California. This year, when we hopped on Zoom at the end of May, I couldn't wait to talk to the actress about the latest happenings in her life: graduating from college and becoming a fragrance ambassador for Coach. As a self-proclaimed fragrance girl, the latter achievement is a post-graduation career move that Reid is relishing. "Coach has been a part of my life forever," she tells me. "I remember having Coach shoes and little bags growing up. So when this opportunity came about, it was an easy 'yes.' I love fragrance—one of my favorite compliments is 'You smell good'—so this partnership aligned with me perfectly." Reid's first order of business in her new role? Fronting the campaign for Coach's latest women's fragrance, Coach Gold—a bold scent featuring warm vanilla, almond blossom accord, and fruity notes. Ahead, Reid takes us through her first impressions of Coach Gold, her fragrance wardrobe through the years, and what she's currently working on in Hollywood. "I don't know if they still make it, but the Juicy Couture fragrance in the pink bottle with gold detailing was one of my first perfumes.
