Herd of elephants trample woman to death in Kruger National Park

The Citizen12-05-2025

An elderly tourist was trampled by a herd of elephants in the Kruger National Park on Saturday night.
Lowvelder reports the 68-year-old woman was a visitor at the Sirheni Bushveld Camp in the northern part of the Kruger. She reportedly woke up and walked out of the chalet she was sharing with her husband just before 23:00.
The circumstances surrounding her death are uncertain, and police investigations are ongoing.
SANParks spokesperson JP Louw confirmed the incident but declined to provide details, referring Lowvelder to the SAPS.
'SANParks has been attending to the unfortunate incident of a visitor who lost her life after encountering elephants. In compliance with the law, the matter has been handed over to the SAPS who must be approached for updates. Out of respect for the family and also appreciative of the law, SANParks will not provide commentary on the incident,' said Louw.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the matter was reported at the Saselamani Police Station in the Collins Chabane Local Municipality near the Kruger's Punda Maria Gate.
'The information at our disposal is that at around 23:00 on May 10, a female tourist (68), who was a visitor at a well-known lodge, was attacked and killed by elephants. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still a subject for investigation,' said Ledwaba.
He added the victim's identity would not be revealed until her next of kin could be notified of the incident.
It is also not clear whether the victim was a local or a foreign tourist.

Man who set partner alight sentenced to 18 years

A man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of his partner. The 45-year-old Klaas Banyane doused his partner with petrol and set her alight at their residence in A Section, Botshabelo. The victim was rushed to Pelonomi Hospital with severe burn wounds to receive medical treatment, but succumbed to her injuries. When confronted by community patrollers, Banyane fled the scene. Investigations led the police to Verkeerdevlei, where they arrested him. The Botshabelo Magistrate's Court found Banyane guilty of murder and sentenced him to 18 years' imprisonment. Three South African Police Service (SAPS) members were arrested for escorting a vehicle trafficking dagga along the N4 Road near Matsulu T-junction on Tuesday, 10 June 2025. The members, who are aged between 32 and 49, were in full uniform and travelling in a Toyota Corolla carrying 107 bags loaded with dagga. The confiscated dagga is estimated to be worth millions of rands. The Matsulu SAPS received information about the suspects, prompting investigations. The SAPS arrested the suspects, who are now facing corruption charges that they were allegedly involved in. The three suspects are expected to appear at the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court on Thursday, 12 June 2025. ALLEGED SEXUAL OFFENDER'S BAIL APPLICATION POSTPONED The bail application of a 50-year-old man who was arrested for alleged numerous sexual offences has been postponed to 19 June 2025. He faces multiple charges, including sexual exploitation, sexual grooming, facilitating the creation of child pornography and recruiting a child for financial rewards. According to the police, the suspect lured two boys, aged 15 and 16, by promising them gifts in exchange for sexually explicit videos and images. Speaking to The South African, Captain Loraine Earle explained that his application was postponed due to his income bracket. 'His bail application was postponed because his application for Legal Aid was rejected due to his income bracket. He has to seek and appoint his attorney now,' said Earle. The suspect was arrested in Brackenfell and made his first court appearance on 2 June 2025. The investigation is currently underway and additional charges will be added if applicable. Court postpones case of worker accused of raping learner at Joburg primary school

A case involving allegations of rape at Dalmondeor Primary School in Mondeor, Johannesburg, will continue next Thursday. According to Southern Courier, the incident reportedly occurred on May 21 on the school's premises. The victim is said to be a Grade 2 learner at the school. A 31-year-old suspect, employed as a maintenance worker at the school, is accused by the alleged victim's mother, who claimed he raped her child. The case resumed at the Booysens Magistrate's Court yesterday. The proceedings began with the court warrant officer searching the courtroom to locate the accused. Magistrate Habib had postponed the case on Thursday to verify the new address of the accused, but that task was not fully completed. Magistrate Matshitse, who took over the case, questioned the need for a second postponement. 'This case was postponed to verify the address of the accused and for profiling, yet this has not been done. I would like that to happen as soon as possible,' said Matshitse. 'I want this issue to be resolved today, as there needs to be a period set for profiling and the formal bail application.' After a lengthy delay in proceedings, the accused's address was verified and the case resumed. 'As the address has been verified but profiling has not been done, I am forced to postpone to allow it to take place,' said Matshitse. 'The case will resume on June 19. The accused is to remain in custody,' he continued. The courtroom was filled with members of the Dalmondeor school governing body and parents. The accused appeared before the court in the same blue overalls he had been wearing at the time of his arrest more than two weeks ago.
