Karnataka cabinet decides to conduct new caste survey in state: CM Siddaramaiah
The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday unanimously approved the decision to conduct a fresh Socio-Educational Survey, commonly referred to as the caste census, in the state, news agency PTI reported.
Speaking to reporters after a special cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, 'We have taken a decision in the cabinet. It was a unanimous decision that a new survey is to be conducted.'

He added that the state government would work in consultation with the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission and has proposed a 90-day timeline to carry out the survey and submit the report.
The move follows a directive from the Congress high command earlier this week, urging the state to initiate caste re-enumeration amid rising concerns from several communities that they were excluded or misrepresented in the earlier survey conducted a decade ago.
The announcement also comes at a time when the cabinet was already reviewing the findings of the Socio-Educational Survey submitted to the government, which was based on the 2015 data collection.

FTA with India brings ‘genuine' competitive advantage, UK Parliament told
London, Jun 14 (PTI) The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations concluded with India places the UK at a 'genuine" competitive advantage in the manufacturing sector, the House of Commons was told this week. During a debate on the bilateral FTA agreed last month, UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds fielded a series of questions on the advantages of the deal which has been pegged to increase bilateral trade by GBP 25.5 billion annually in the long term. Reynolds reiterated that the pact marked a huge economic win for the UK as the 'best deal that India has ever offered". 'On advanced manufacturing… a set of advantageous positions has been agreed, putting this country at a genuine competitive advantage, particularly in relation to sectors such as automotive and machinery," said Reynolds, in response to a question by British Sikh Labour MP for Smethwick, West Midlands, Gurinder Singh Josan. 'India is traditionally a very protectionist economy, and it is the world's fastest growing big economy. Whether it is for goods or services… or the West Midlands as a whole, there is so much good stuff here to celebrate," added the minister. The debate this week comes ahead of UK-India Week, which begins next week as part of the annual India Global Forum (IGF) summit in London. The India-UK FTA is set to dominate the agenda, with Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal among the speakers expected to address the forum. It will also mark the launch of the 2025 edition of the 'India Meets Britain Tracker', which analyses the investment flows by Indian companies into the UK. With the UK and India ranking as the sixth and fourth largest economies respectively, the Tracker offers insights into one of the world's most strategic investment corridors following last year's report setting a new record of 971 Indian-owned companies operating in the UK – a figure that has been consistently on an upward trajectory. 'Indian businesses are no longer just investing abroad – they are transforming global economies," said IGF founder Manoj Ladwa. According to the UK's Department for Business and Trade (DBT), the India-UK FTA slashes tariffs across the board and is set to increase UK GDP by GBP 4.8 billion and wages by GBP 2.2 billion each year over the next decade. Congress MP sends 'reminder' to Rajya Sabha chair on pending impeachment motion against Justice Shekhar Yadav
Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Vivek Tankha has written to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, chairman of the Upper House, to remind him about a pending motion, signed by 55 MPs, seeking the removal of Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court on the grounds 'of alleged misbehaviour unbecoming of a judge'. 'Queries were raised regarding the authenticity of some signatures, including that of my signature. I have clarified, and supposedly other MPs must have clarified to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat that the signatures are genuine and correct. MPs signed in the presence of each other on three sets of the representation in the House itself…' Mr. Tankha said in his letter, dated June 12. He said that senior Opposition MPs had been present, including P. Chidambaram and Digvijaya Singh of the Congress, Independent Kapil Sibal, John Brittas of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Rashtriya Janata Dal's Manoj Jha, and P. Wilson of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. In all, 55 Opposition MPs had moved an impeachment motion against Justice Yadav on December 13, 2024, for allegedly making 'communal' remarks within the court's premises. 'We request that due consideration be given to the pendency of this motion, as it reflects the collective concern of Members of this august House,' Mr. Tankha said. Parliamentary inquiry needed The Congress MP also voiced his opposition to the Union government's plan to remove Justice Yashwant Varma, who was indicted by a three-member committee set up by the former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. In March, a large quantity of half-burnt currency notes were recovered during a fire at Justice Varma's official residence while he was serving as a Delhi High Court judge. The Supreme Court then moved him to the Allahabad High Court and took away all his judicial work after an in-house inquiry indicted Justice Varma. Now, the government has reached out to political parties to move a motion to remove Justice Varma on the basis of the Supreme Court's in-house inquiry report. 'The in-house Committee report is only meant for the Chief Justice of India and other judges of the Supreme Court, and cannot constitute the basis for removal,' Mr. Tankha said, arguing that Parliament must conduct a fresh inquiry under the Judges Inquiry Act.

Mahayuti govt to form committee on waiving farm loans after Kadu's hunger strike; opposition slams delay
MUMBAI: The Mahayuti government in Maharashtra has decided to constitute a committee to execute the decision of waiving farm loans. Prahar Sangthan leader and former minister Bacchu Kadu was on a hunger strike for the last seven days to press the demand of farm loan waiver. He said that during the assembly elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti had given the promise of farm loan waiver, but now they are dilly-dallying over it. Kadu said that after his hunger strike, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called him and assured him that farm loans would be waived. However, the Chief Minister requested more time to study the issue, saying the state government is forming a committee. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena minister Uday Samant rushed to Amarawati to break Kadu's hunger strike by offering lime juice and handed over a letter promising the waiver of farm loans. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the government is committed to waiving farm loans, but they need time to study and finalise the matter. He said that the Mahayuti government has already started various welfare schemes for farmers. 'Once we receive the committee report, we will start the farm loan waiver scheme in the state,' said Shinde. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Kadu will also be part of the proposed farm loan waiver committee. Kadu said that if the Mahayuti government tries to betray the farmers, they will barge into Mantralaya and carry out protests on a large scale. Opposition leaders slammed the Mahayuti government for its announcement of forming a committee to waive farm loans. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar questioned why the Mahayuti needs to form a committee as they are in power and can make an announcement right away. He said that when the Maha Vikas Aghadi was in power, they waived farmers' loan without any delay and without any terms and conditions. Senior Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat said that farm loans should be waived without any ifs and buts. It should be a complete loan waiver as only then will farmers get real relief, he added.
