UK's ‘largest' on-street EV chargepoint project announced

Yahoo06-04-2025

A project claiming to be the UK's largest installation of on-street electric vehicle (EV) chargers has been announced.
Chargepoint operator char.gy said it will fit more than 6,000 kerbside chargers for Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC) after securing a £130 million contract.
The rollout of public EV charging is seen as vital to persuade drivers without off-road parking to switch to electric motoring.
Installing street chargers near homes will reduce the need for people to drive to a charging station, and enable more motorists to take advantage of cheaper overnight electricity rates.
John Lewis, chief executive of char.gy, described the announcement as 'a huge moment for the UK and its EV ambitions'.
He said: 'This partnership alone will empower thousands of residents to confidently make the switch to electric vehicles, knowing they have easy access to chargers.
'As local authorities across the UK prepare to follow suit, this stands as a powerful first example of how the public and private sectors are coming together to deliver impactful projects that stimulate the demand for EVs and bring the UK meaningfully closer to achieving our sustainability goals.'
BHCC is one of the first local authorities to use the Government's Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (Levi) funding.
The scheme supports local authorities in England to plan and deliver charging infrastructure for residents without off-street parking.
Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood said making EV charging as easy as possible is 'crucial to making the switch to electric a success'.
She went on: 'Rolling out over 6,000 chargers across Brighton and Hove will make driving an electric vehicle easier and more convenient, especially for those without a driveway.
'It will power growth, cut emissions and improve lives in Brighton and Hove and beyond, as we continue to create jobs, attract investment and secure our future.'
Quentin Willson, founder of EV lobby group FairCharge, said: 'Such a huge and very visible deployment of on-street chargers will help create consumer confidence in charging infrastructure.
'It will also show other local authorities that with ambition and Government Levi funding, it's possible to offer chargers to the neglected 30% of EV drivers who can't charge at home.'
Char.gy has been handed a 15-year contract to operate and maintain the charging network.
Last month the Department for Transport (DfT) said the number of public EV charging devices installed in the UK exceeded 75,000.
A report published by public spending watchdog the National Audit Office in December found the rollout of public EV chargers was 'on track' to meet the 300,000 the DfT estimates will be the minimum needed by 2030.
There are more than 680,000 domestic chargepoints in England alone.
The Government has pledged to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2030.

General Motors commits $4 billion in Michigan's Orion Assembly Plant, two other facilities

General Motors announced on Tuesday a $4 billion investment over the next two years in three U.S. manufacturing plants, one of which is located in Michigan. According to a news release from the automaker, some of the investment will expand Orion Assembly in Orion Township. The company says the facility will "begin production of gas-powered full-size SUVs and light duty pickup trucks" in 2027. GM says the investment will help meet the demand. With the expansion, GM's Factory ZERO plant in Detroit will produce electric vehicle trucks, such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, and GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV. The $4 billion investment also includes expansion of the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas, and Spring Hill Manufacturing in Spring Hill, Tennessee. GM says the investment will allow the automaker to produce more than 2 million vehicles annually in the U.S. "We believe the future of transportation will be driven by American innovation and manufacturing expertise," GM CEO Mary Barra said in the news release. "Today's announcement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to build vehicles in the U.S and to support American jobs. We're focused on giving customers choice and offering a broad range of vehicles they love." The announcement further confirms GM's push away from turning the Orion plant into an EV factory. In 2023, the company delayed electric pickup truck production at the facility due to slow demand for EVs in the United States. The automaker's latest investment comes two weeks after it announced an $888 million investment in the Tonawanda Propulsion Plant in Buffalo, New York, where it produces the next-generation V-8 engine. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell said the investment is "good news for Michigan's workers and our role as a leader in the global auto industry." "In order to remain a leader, we must be producing a robust product line that consumers want, including electric vehicles. The global market wants EVs," Dingell said. "This investment demonstrates the auto industry's commitment to this leadership, and U.S. policy must support it. I will continue to work with every stakeholder to invest in manufacturing here at home, bring back jobs from overseas, and support the workers and communities who have built their lives around the auto industry." Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued the following statement: "GM and Michigan have a long, rich history, and today's massive investment in Lake Orion is just the latest chapter. "I am grateful to GM for bringing more auto manufacturing back home to Michigan, protecting thousands of good-paying, union auto jobs. Over the last few years, GM has grown their footprint in their home state, and I am proud that the state of Michigan has been a strong partner in helping them 'build, baby, build!' We have worked aggressively to bring more auto jobs to Michigan by cutting red tape, incentivizing R&D, streamlining Renaissance Zones, and speeding up permitting, and I am proud that GM is delivering today. "Since I took office, we have been working across the aisle to win every deal that we can and bring more good-paying union jobs back home. We will continue our comprehensive, commonsense approach to growing our economy and compete with other states and nations while working with industry partners like GM to remain the #1 state for auto manufacturing and weather national economic uncertainty. "We don't care what you drive—gas, diesel, hybrid, or electric—as long as it's made in Michigan. Together, let's keep bringing manufacturing home, growing the middle class, and making more stuff in Michigan."

GM's EV Sales Are Booming. But Can It Catch Tesla?

If you work on any of GM's electric vehicles, give yourself a pat on the back. This past week, the company released a full list of EV sales figures for the first quarter of 2025, and the numbers are shockingly good (pun intended). GM has already delivered more than 62,000 EVs in the US through May, with last month being the second-best in the automaker's history for EV sales. That marks an impressive 94 percent year-over-year increase. GM achieved a 15.5-percent EV market share in Q1, putting it in second place domestically, just behind Tesla. The question is: Can GM take the crown before the end of 2025? GM Vs Tesla Chevrolet Equinox EV While those numbers are impressive for GM, the company still has a way to go if it wants to catch Tesla . According to Cox Automotive , Tesla sold an estimated 128,100 electric vehicles between January and May—nearly double what GM has sold. And that's with an 8.6-percent decrease year-over-year. Tesla also recently introduced the updated Model Y and has plans for more models later in the year. Through April, though, GM's EV sales were up a whopping 94 percent, spearheaded largely by Cadillac and Chevrolet. Cadillac's EVs were up by 37 percent, while Chevy's EV sales improved by an impressive 119 percent, led by the Blazer EV and Equinox EV. GMC also saw a large bump in sales from the Hummer EV and electric Sierra pickup. Sales (Through May) Percent +/- General Motors 62,000 Units +94% Tesla 128,100 Units -8.6% GM currently offers 13 electric vehicles throughout its portfolio of brands, ranging from compact SUVs to trucks. Chevrolet alone has become the fastest-growing EV brand of the group, with more than 37,000 vehicles sold through May. That edges out Ford, which moved just 34,000 EVs in the same period. Chevrolet currently has three EVs in its portfolio: The Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV (not counting the BrightDrop electric cargo van). "Customers are responding in record numbers to our world-class portfolio of electric and gas-powered vehicles," notes Rory Harvey, executive VP and president of global markets. GM's Best Gas Sellers 2025 Buick Enclave Photo by: Buick It's not just the EV side of the business that's seeing sustained success. GM's massive portfolio of gas and hybrid vehicles is also seeing record numbers already this year. Buick was one of the biggest movers early in 2025. Sales for the luxury automaker were up 39 percent through April, with the Enclave, Encore GX, and Envista being the brand's top sellers. The new Enclave alone was up 39 percent—the nameplate's best sales quarter since 2019. As a whole, this was Buick's best sales quarter since 2006. Cadillac wasn't far behind with a sales increase of 21 percent, marking nearly three straight years of retail sales growth. The Escalade had its best Q1 to date, as did Cadillac's V-Series performance cars—likely aided by the arrival of the updated Blackwing models. All told, Cadillac reeled in its best retail market share since 2014. Percent +/- Buick +39% Cadillac +21% Chevrolet +14% GMC +18% GMC had its best sales quarter ever, with an 18 percent increase. The Sierra was up 13 percent, and the Canyon jumped an impressive 66 percent. But the Acadia was the brand's biggest mover, improving by 73 percent. The Yukon and Yukon XL also had their best sales quarters since 2007, improving by 29 percent. By percentages, Chevrolet saw the smallest increase—just 14 percent. But, it was still the brand's best quarter since 2019. The new Trax was up 57 percent, the Traverse jumped by 62 percent, and the Colorado pickup improved by 73 percent. This also marked the best Q1 for the Tahoe since 2007, with a 28 percent increase. There's still plenty of time in the year to see how GM fairs, but so far, the automaker is clearly on the right track.
