Air India plane crash: What began as a desperate hope for the search for a 'missing' husband, ended up in a tragedy for Gujarat filmmaker Mahesh Jirawala's family after his death was officially confirmed a week after the deadly plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. The confirmation came after DNA test results matched his family's samples.
"They were not ready to believe his death," sources aware of the matter told NDTV.
Earlier, a burnt Activa scooter belonging to Jirawala was recovered from the site, raising suspicion that he may have been struck by the crashing aircraft. The Gujarati filmmaker's wife had also shared that Jirawala's mobile phone's last known location was 700 m away from the crash site.
Naroda-resident Mahesh Kalawadia, also known as Mahesh Jirawala, went to meet someone at Law Garden area on June 12 afternoon.
Mahesh Jirawala's wife, Hetal told news agency PTI that her husband had called her up around 1:14 pm, informing her that his meeting was over. At 1:40 pm — a minute after the deadly crash — Jirawala's phone was switched off.

"His phone got switched off around 1:40pm. His scooter and mobile phone are missing. All this is unusual since he would never use that route (as per the last location) to come home. We have submitted DNA samples to check if he was one of those killed on the ground due to the crash," said Hetal.
A Naroda-resident, Mahesh Kalawadia, also known as Mahesh Jirawala used to direct music albums.
Mahesh Jirawala was a well-known name in Gujarat's music and short film circles. His directorial work spanned across various formats, but he was specially recognised for the 2019 Gujarati film Cocktail Premi: Paw of Revenge, which starred Asha Panchal and Vritti Thakkar, mentioned a report by Gujarat Samachar.

DGCA seeks audit and inspection records of Air India from 2024: Report
Aviation safety regulator DGCA has asked flight operations inspectors to provide details of all inspections and audits conducted for Air India since 2024, sources said on Saturday. The details on the findings of the inspections and audits will have to be submitted by Sunday, they said. In an e-mailed communication, which came a day after the regulator issued a show-cause notice to the airline for flight duty time limitations (FDTL) violation, and also ordered removal of the airline's three senior officials from their respective roles for certain lapses, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has sought these details for 2024 and 2025 (to date), the sources said. The data has been sought on planned and unplanned inspections, audit, cockpit/ enroute, station facility, ramp and cabin inspection among others, as per the communication. The Tata Group airline has been facing intense scrutiny since one of its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on June 12, killing over 270 people on board and on the ground. The inspection and audit details sought by the safety regulator include findings on ramp and cabin, among others.

A video showing a school teacher dozing off as a classroom packed with desperate students looks on is doing the rounds on social media, sparking widespread outrage. The viral video, from a Marathi-medium Zilla Parishad school in Gadegavan village of Maharashtra, shows the teacher - VK Munde -taking a peaceful nap, resting on a plastic chair with his legs stretched out on another. Several schoolchildren in school uniform can be seen sitting at their desks, appearing to study or remain engaged in their work. In the video, the man filming can be heard asking a student how long the teacher had been asleep. After a brief hesitation, the student responds, "Half an hour." Moments later, the teacher wakes up, stretches casually, and appears completely unfazed by being caught on camera. Following the incident, a complaint was filed with Zonal Education Officer Satish Shinde, who assured that an investigation would be carried out and appropriate action taken, NDTV reported. In a similar incident, last year in July, a video from a primary school in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh showed a teacher dozing off on the classroom floor while students took turns waving handheld fans over her. The clip quickly went viral, sparking widespread outrage on social media. The footage appeared to show the government school teacher lying on the floor asleep, as one student after another fanned her. However, authorities later clarified that the video was misleading. District Basic Education Officer Rakesh Singh stated that the teacher had actually fallen from a chair and the students were fanning her because she needed immediate medical assistance. An investigation confirmed that the children were not instructed to fan her for comfort but were trying to help her after the fall.

Air India Plane crash: 9 days after tragedy, eight families continue to wait for DNA samples to match
The identities of at least eight victims who died in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, are yet to be known as the DNA samples have not yet matched. The authorities have asked the families to submit a DNA sample of another relative as the previous ones failed to match. According to the details, DNA samples of 247 victims have been matched, and 232 bodies have been handed over to their families till Saturday, reported PTI. "Unless there is a match, bodies cannot be handed over to the kin," said Rakesh Joshi, medical superintendent, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Doctor Joshi said that since the DNA matching process is highly sensitive and involves legal protocols, it is being conducted with utmost seriousness and speed. "When there is no match for a longer period of time, then you can ask another sample from another relative. If one sibling has given the sample, then a sample of another sibling is sought for matching the DNA with that of the victim," he said. "We generally prefer a sample of father or son/daughter. If not, then we take a sample of another available member," Joshi added. To ease the lengthy process, Forensic Science University, along with associated institutions, local administrative authorities, the state government's health and other departments, and various agencies are working tirelessly. Ahmedabad-based filmmaker Mahesh Jirawala's mortal remains were handed over to his family only after the matching of DNA samples confirmed that he died in the catastrophe. He was reported missing following the June 12 air plane crash. Police said that through the matching of DNA samples it has been confirmed that filmmaker Jirawala has died in the plane crash. He was passing by from the area on his two-wheeler just when the London-bound plane plunged into a hostel complex. On 12 June, the London-bound Air India flight AI-171 carrying 242 passengers and crew members crashed in Ahmedabad moments after it off from the city airport. In the crash 241 were killed on board and 29 on the ground as the aircraft smashed into a medical complex in Meghaninagar. With some bodies were burnt beyond recognition or damaged otherwise, authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of victims of the horrific tragedy. Relatives and friends gave an emotional farewell to Deepak Pathak and Irfan Shaikh, the two crew members of the ill-fated flight, in Maharashtra's Badlapur in Thane district and Pimpri-Chinchwad near Pune city, respectively. Deepak Pathak's body was consigned to flames at a crematorium in the presence of thousands of mourners. He had been serving the national carrier for the past 11 years and his identification was confirmed through DNA testing. While, Pimpri Chinchwad-based Shaikh family had received Irfan's remains after a DNA match on Friday. It was brought to Pune and his last rites were held at a graveyard in Nehru Nagar in the presence of family, neighbours, friends, and leaders from across political parties.
