Drake Maye: Stefon Diggs seems like an awesome teammate

NBC Sports3 hours ago

The Patriots added Stefon Diggs this offseason with the thought that the veteran receiver will help elevate an offense quarterbacked by Drake Maye.
While Diggs is still recovering from tearing his ACL midway through the 2024 season, he's been in the building and has done some on-field work over the last couple of weeks.
Maye said on Monday that the budding partnership between QB and WR is going well.
'Yeah, he seems like an awesome teammate,' Maye said in his press conference, via transcript from the team. 'He's my locker mate, one down from beside me. We talk all the time. He's a veteran in this league. He's made a lot of plays, played in a lot of big-time games. Just an awesome voice for the receiver room, for this offense. He's played in some playoff games. He's had some big games.
'Once he recovers, and he's getting back out there, I'm looking forward to being able to throw him some footballs. It's always good having a guy like that on your team.'
Maye added that he's been able to see some of Diggs' work ethic in action.
'In the meetings, [he's] asking questions, asking me after plays, 'Hey, what should I have done there? Hey, in the past, I've done this when the guy's playing this leverage,' stuff like that,' Maye said. 'He's seen a lot of different things, played a long time in this league. It's been great for me. A veteran receiver, him, Mack [Hollins], Kendrick Bourne. We got three, not really old heads, but old heads in their 30s. It's been awesome for us to find how they lead the room and help this offense.'
Last season, Diggs caught 47 passes for 496 yards with three touchdowns in eight games for Houston.

RB Nick Chubb signs with Texans on 1-year deal: How he expands Houston's backfield

By Dianna Russini, Zac Jackson, Adam Coleman and Zach Powell Former Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb, who was a free agent, signed with the Houston Texans on Tuesday, the team announced. The contract, which was contingent on Chubb passing a physical on Monday, is a one-year deal worth at least $2.5 million and up to $5 million, according to league sources. Chubb received more lucrative offers from other teams, but he would sign a more incentive-laden contract to join Joe Mixon in Houston's backfield. Chubb, 29, was sidelined for much of the last two seasons due to knee and foot injuries. Welcome to H-Town, Nick Chubb‼️ — Houston Texans (@HoustonTexans) June 9, 2025 Houston will be just the second team Chubb has played for in his seven seasons. A second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Georgia, Chubb has impacted the Browns' ground game since his rookie season. The four-time Pro Bowler rushed for 996 yards in his first season, followed by four straight seasons of 1,000-plus yards. Advertisement Chubb's 2023 season was cut short by a serious knee injury in Week 2. He returned in Week 7 of the 2024 season, but would wind up missing the final three games that season with a broken foot. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry and 84.5 yards per game in his first five seasons, and 3.9 yards per carry and 50.2 yards per game in the past two seasons. The injuries are a concern, of course, but Chubb on an incentive-laden one-year deal in a reserve role seems like a good bet for the Texans to make. A healthy backfield of Mixon and Chubb only helps quarterback CJ Stroud and new offensive coordinator Nick Caley. This is suddenly an interesting running back room, too. The Texans just used a fourth-round pick on USC running back Woody Marks to spell the hard-nosed Mixon, who dealt with injuries of his own last season. Then, there is Dameon Pierce, who could be on the bubble. He had an outstanding rookie season in 2022 but has since lost his way. How it all shakes out in camp and during the preseason will be interesting. — Adam Coleman, NFL staff editor The 2024 version of Chubb was not the same version we'd seen before. And though his departure from Cleveland becoming close to official stings the team's fans, the Browns had moved on, and had to. Chubb's gruesome injury in September 2023 in Pittsburgh marked the unofficial end to an incredible marriage of team and low-maintenance superstar that began early in Chubb's rookie season of 2018. Chubb almost always got the tough yards, almost always made the proper play and always wanted the ball without having to say it or post about it. It's hard to tell what the Texans are getting in Chubb now, six months from his 30th birthday, but it seems a smart bet for a Houston team that plans to return to the playoffs. Advertisement Chubb seemed to gain confidence and quickness last season before that broken foot derailed his comeback. If he can still serve as a between-the-tackles runner who brings physicality even without that extra gear, he can still be a useful and productive player. The Browns drafted two running backs and are smartly moving towards their future, but Chubb's presence and playmaking will never be forgotten. — Zac Jackson, Browns beat writer

Patriots Quarterback Drake Maye Developing Into Second-Year Leader

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye stands 12 starts and 338 pass attempts into his NFL ... More career. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa) Drake Maye finds himself in the lane between an NFL rookie and an NFL veteran. He is currently neither. But at age 22, he is in the driver's seat with functioning turn signals. The New England Patriots will go where the quarterback goes in 2025. His development as a leader will play a part in just how far that is. There's room to merge. 'Well, I think we're always trying to evolve in what we do, whether that's leadership, whether that's learning the other side of the football, whether that's learning each other,' Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said during his Monday press conference outside Gillette Stadium. 'Again, Drake, I think it's a unique position being 22 – it's kind of unique in that sense. So, I think that there is a lot of room to grow. I think there's a lot of natural leadership qualities. I think I have to encourage him, continue to encourage him and to put him in those positions to do that so that the players understand that there's a different version of all of us.' Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, stands a dozen starts into his career. He won't turn 23 until after the preseason schedule reaches the rearview in August. 'I think it's an opportunity for me to take a jump from last year being a rookie, trying to come in here and kind of earn my stripe, earn my keep through hard work,' Maye told reporters following the first practice of mandatory minicamp. 'And I think this year it's the same approach. You got new guys in here, new staff. Got to keep getting to know everybody, got to show my work ethic and then kind of from there. As the season comes around, try to take the next step in leadership, leading the offense and hopefully leading this football team.' Maye's rookie year with the Patriots brought a 66.6% completion rate along with 2,276 yards through the air. Fifteen touchdowns were thrown. Ten interceptions also were. An additional 421 yards and pair of scores arrived by ground. But turnover from the coaching staff to the roster has raised the ground in Foxborough since going 4-13 for the second time in as many years. If something doesn't look as it should, it will be addressed as it should. 'I think Coach Vrabel kind of set that tone when he came here and got hired of, 'Hey, if you're not doing the right thing, repeated times, there's going to be some consequences,'' added Maye. 'I think that's something we needed to establish, and I think it's something that me growing up with three older brothers and around older people my whole life, I've kind of been comfortable once I got acclimated – I feel like I definitely am now – to step into that zone.' Maye, who made the Pro Bowl as an alternate, is driven to meet the new expectations under Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. And alongside a cast of new rookies as well as veterans ranging from wide receiver Stefon Diggs and offensive tackle Morgan Moses to defensive tackle Milton Williams and outside linebacker Harold Landry III. 'You want high expectations. That's what you want,' the University of North Carolina product said. 'The Patriots are used to winning, and that's what we're trying to get back to. I think you want people to expect you to play good. I think that pressure is kind of what fuels you to be out here, what fuels you to get the rep right in practice, what fuels you to work hard in the meetings or work hard in the weight room to kind of not let what happened last year happen again.'

Cowboys Urged To Sign Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander After Packers Cut

Cowboys Urged To Sign Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander After Packers Cut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - It took 10 seconds. Within 10 seconds after the Monday morning breaking news on the Green Bay Packers leaking their decision to release two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander, the texts started coming in. Advertisement Within a few minutes after that, social media and the internet were ablaze. And here we go again, with your Dallas Cowboys attached to an available big name ... with nobody pausing to take a breath to consider the facts. First, to Green Bay, where the two sides have been attempting for months to work out a revised contract ... with the team uncomfortable with continuing to pay Alexander on the four-year, $84 million extension they just gave him a year ago. What is their issue? Injuries, mostly, as Alexander has missed significant time in three of the past four seasons. In other words, to some degree, he's the Packers' version of Trevon Diggs. Advertisement When healthy? He's a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback (like Diggs). He's still young at 28. (Diggs will turn 27 this season.) But as excited as Cowboys Nation gets about stuff like this, Dallas' hesitation here will — and should — mirror Green Bay's hesitation. Jaire's cap numbers presently? That'd be $25 mil for this year and $27 mil for next year ... though there is contractually escapability after 2025. So ... he could be a one-year rental ... and maybe he won't demand $20 million plus. Of course, if you're going to do that, why not just trade for Miami's Jalen Ramsey? (Which the Cowboys are openly saying they have no interest in doing.) Advertisement Alexander was a 2018 first-round pick; he's got pedigree. While totaling 12 interceptions over his career, he's a playmaker. ... though not on a level with Diggs. ... Which brings us back to Dallas. In 2023. Diggs played just two games. He played 11 games in 2024 before he suffered another season-ending injury. Now he might miss half of this season. They therefore have DaRon Bland and a bunch of guys in the cornerback room at present. Should the Cowboys "jump at the chance '' to sign Alexander? No. Should they explore it, call on it, ponder the finances and the injuries and the risks? Sure. But that takes more than 10 seconds. Or even 10 minutes.
