WhatsApp is set to become obsolete on a range of older smartphones starting this month. The update, which kicked in from June 1, will see the app cease to function on devices over a decade old.
Due to updates in WhatsApp's system requirements for operating systems, several aged smartphones will lose access to the widely-used messaging service amid security concerns. Originally slated for May, the implementation was deferred to June.
iPhones that came out before or in 2014 and can't be updated to iOS version 15.1 are among those affected. For Android users, the cut-off is now OS 5.0, also from 2014.
WhatsApp has been proactive, sending out notifications urging users to "update to the latest version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp." These messages targeted individuals with iPhones running on any system older than iOS 15.1, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Owners of iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus, as well as previous models, will find themselves unable to meet the new iOS 18 requirement, rendering WhatsApp unusable on their phones post-update. Certain Android handsets, including Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X, and Sony Xperia Z, will also lose the ability to support Meta's messaging platform.
As per 9to5Mac, Meta's FAQ page explains that the discontinuation of support for these older models stems from their lack of recent security enhancements and features necessary for WhatsApp's operation. Apple deemed the iPhone 6 "obsolete" a little over a year ago, indicating that the company will cease to provide repairs or service for the device, and third-party service providers are unable to purchase parts for these products.
Earlier in April, WhatsApp revealed twelve new features users could utilise. As the world's most popular messaging app, WhatsApp has an impressive user base of over two billion. WhatsApp mentioned in a blog on their website: "To keep you in the loop, we'll be sharing regular roundups of the latest updates, tools, and settings."
A newly published roundup showcases recently introduced features that may have gone unnoticed. These updates include:
Chats
Real-time online indicator in group conversations: To let you know when others are available for a chat, the number of people currently 'online' is displayed under the group name in real-time.
Customisable notification highlights within groups: Using the 'Notify for' feature and selecting 'Highlights,' you can limit notifications to @mentions, replies, and messages from favourite contacts. Opting for 'All' will let you receive all notifications.
Event updates
It is now possible to create events within 1:1 conversations on WhatsApp. Furthermore, users can RSVP with a 'maybe,' invite someone to join them, specify the end date and time of longer events, and have the option to pin an event to the chat.
Tappable reactions
Viewing everyone's reactions at once and choosing yours with just a tap is now possible.
Document Scanning on iPhone
You can now scan and send documents directly from WhatsApp on your iPhone. Simply select 'Scan document' from the attachment section and follow the instructions to scan, crop, and save the document.
Default App for iPhone
With the most recent iOS update, you can set WhatsApp as your default messaging and calling app on your iPhone. To do this, navigate to Settings > Default Apps and choose WhatsApp.
Pinch to Zoom in Video Calls
iPhone users can now use the pinch to zoom feature during a video call to get a closer look at their own or another person's video.
Add to Call from a Chat
You can add someone to an ongoing call directly from a chat thread by tapping the call icon at the top and selecting 'Add to call'.
Enjoy Smoother Video Calls
Efforts have been made to reduce dropped calls and video freezing. Improved bandwidth detection swiftly upgrades your video to HD quality for a more enjoyable experience.
Video Notes for Channels
Channel admins can now instantly record and share short videos (60 seconds or less) with followers, similar to chats.
Voice Message Transcripts on Channels
You can now receive a written summary of voice message updates from channels when you're on the move and unable to listen to them.
QR Codes
As a channel admin, you can now share a unique QR code that links directly to your channel, making it easier to share with others and expand your audience.

Dublin City Council to invest €6 million in new public toilets after St Stephen's Green reversal

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Dublin City Council is poised to spend nearly €6 million on four new public toilets in the city centre. It comes after a reversal of plans to close the last remaining public toilet in the city at St Stephen's Green. The Council had initially intended to shut the temporary toilets at the top of Grafton Street due to decreased demand. However, this plan was abandoned following opposition from both Councillors and the public. And it has now been revealed that there are plans for four new public toilets in the city, according to the Irish Independent. The proposals suggest two will be situated on the southside of the city at South King Street and at Barnardo Square on Dame Street. The other pair will be north of the River Liffey on Prince's Street, just off O'Connell Street, and at Smithfield Square. The final cost is projected to be €5.7 million, as per the report set to be presented to Councillors on Monday. The report estimates that the facilities will cost €1.3 million to install, and it is believed an additional €4.4 million will need to be spent over the next five years on maintenance, cleaning, and security. The Council expects the toilets to run at a significant loss, with its budget covering the shortfall. A 50c charge for use is also being considered. Ask Adrian: My phone keeps turning itself off, can I fix it?

My phone keeps freezing and turning itself off. It does this about four or five times a day. It's a Samsung and it's about five years old. Is there some way to fix it myself? — Lorraine O'Connor Answer If possible, try to check that it's up to speed with the latest Android update from Samsung. You can check this by going into 'settings' and then 'software update'. It should tell you what version you are and whether you need to update it. (Don't worry, updates are free.) Sometimes an older version of a phone's interface can cause it to glitch a little bit. If that doesn't fix it, try shutting the phone off completely for a minute or so and turning it back on. I know this sounds obvious, but most of us never actually switch our phones off – we just send them to sleep or into 'do not disturb' mode at night while they charge. If that still doesn't work, you might consider doing a compete reset of the phone. Again, you can do this in settings by choosing 'general management' and then 'reset' (or just do a search in settings for the word 'reset'). It's very important to back things up before you do this, though. You'll have to do this individually twice (at least); once for WhatsApp (if you use this) and once for everything else. To back up WhatsApp on a Samsung phone, you need to allow chat backup to Google Drive within WhatsApp's own settings on your phone. For the rest, you can go to 'settings', then 'accounts and backup' and then, under Google Drive, 'back up data'. If you want to be extra safe, you'd also back up on Samsung's Cloud, again under 'settings' and then 'accounts and backup'. If none of that works, then it's a judgment call on whether it's worth going to get it looked at by a repair shop or getting a new one. If was a sub-€300 phone, it might not be worth repairing from a cost perspective.

OnePlus Pad 3 1st impressions: can an Android tablet finally replace my laptop?

On-fire tech brand OnePlus has launched OnePlus Pad 3, a flagship tablet fusing supercharged hardware with clever software and AI features. It comes hot on the heels of the OnePlus Pad 2 which I said was 'ideal for streaming TV shows, watching movies, reading e-books and magazines and browsing websites'. It was one of a number of tablets we reviewed last year that hoped to challenge the dominance of Apple iPad in the market. Huawei matched Apple in terms of hardware on its MatePad Pro 12.2. We said the Paper Matte Edition had a superior display to every other tablet including Apple's flagship iPad Pro in our review. However, hardware is only half the story on tablets and apart from the excellent free GoPaint app that rivals the iPad-only Procreate app, Huawei's MatePad Pro fell way short of what iPad offers in software. That's because of the range of iPad optimised apps which makes it easy for Apple. We also reviewed the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+ which is a similar size to OnePlus Pad 3 but costs almost double the price. It was probably the most complete Android tablet I've tested yet but did not offer enough compelling features to challenge Apple's flagship iPad Pro. The OnePlus Pad 2 was probably closest to the mid-range iPad Air series. It was "a device with zippy performance, a bright and colourful display, powerful speakers and outstanding battery life. And it was powered by last year's high-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip along with a decent 12GB of RAM". Now along comes the OnePlus Pad 3 and I've decided to test it for an upcoming full review by ditching my Windows laptop for a couple of weeks to see if the Android tablet can replace the notebook for both work and play. In the meantime, here are my first impressions… The OnePlus Pad 3 sure looks the part. Measuring less than 6mm thin, the device has a metal unibody design to ensure it is super strong and bend resistant. It weighs just 675g so it's light enough to take everywhere with you. My review unit is a hue that the company calls Storm Blue. The tablet's large, pin-sharp, 13.2in LCD display comes with 3.4k resolution, 12-bit colour depth and pixel density of 315 PPI (pixels per inch). It's perfect for displaying everything from the latest blockbuster movie to your latest work presentation. And its unique 7:5 aspect ratio means multitasking is an absolute breeze. Eight symmetrically placed speakers - four woofers and four tweeters - add to the immersive media consumption experience. Under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite, the most powerful mobile system-on-a-chip on the market, coupled with up to 16GB that should be all the power you need for high-end productivity or intensive gaming. The model I'm testing only has 12GB of RAM but I haven't noticed any lag or stutter - it is breezing through everything I throw at it. Battery life is rated at up to 17 hours which is almost double some rival tablets. Overall, the new OnePlus Pad 3 combines a premium hardware and software experience at an iPad Air price point. I'm looking forward to testing the machine out fully in the coming days and weeks. I'm using it with the firm's latest Smart Keyboard. It seamlessly connects to the tablet using the built-in pogo pins and no Bluetooth connection is needed. The accompanying stand can be adjusted to a range of angles, just like a laptop. OnePlus Pad 3 is on sale at for €599 (12GB/256GB) and €699 (16GB/512GB). The Stylo accessory is €99, the Smart Keyboard is €169 and the folio case is €59. The 13in Apple iPad Air, for comparison, costs from €979 from
