Thousands of Ford Kuga hybrid drivers ‘left in limbo' after fire risk warnings
Thousands of drivers have reportedly been left in limbo after warnings that their car could catch fire due to a battery defect.
Ford issued an urgent recall of its Kuga plug-in hybrid car in early March, warning drivers not to charge the battery because of a risk it might short-circuit while on the road. The problem could cause a loss of power or a fire, according to the recall notice. Four weeks later, the manufacturer has yet to announce a timescale for repairs and owners report that it is failing to respond to their requests for an update.
David Ellis is one of an estimated 26,000 owners to have received the red-hatched letter from Ford warning of potential injury if the battery is plugged in. It instructs occupants to exit their vehicle immediately if the 'stop safely now' warning is triggered while on the road and advises that it will be in touch when engineers have developed a software fix. However, it says that affected vehicles are still safe to drive.
'The advice to exit the car quickly is alarming,' Ellis said. 'My husband uses a hoist and a wheelchair so we can't exit anywhere quickly. I therefore can't drive him in the car until it is made safe.'
Ellis bought his car eight months ago in order to reduce fuel costs and emissions. He says the monthly running costs have nearly doubled since he stopped charging the battery.
'Aside from the safety issue, it calls into question Ford's green credentials and customer service,' he said. 'They have advised they are not proactively offering customers any form of recompense for increased fuel use or damage to the battery from lack of charging for up to four months.'
Ford did not respond to requests for a comment.
The recall affects the current-generation Kuga which has been on sale since 2019. There are more than 26,000 on the road across Europe. The manufacturer has suspended deliveries of new models until the software glitch has been addressed.
It estimates that a remedy will be available to dealers by July, but given the number of affected vehicles, drivers face a wait of many more weeks for a repair slot.
This is the second time the Ford Kuga has been recalled because of a potential fire hazard. In 2020 the manufacturer had to replace the battery units of more than 27,000 cars after seven caught fire while charging.

Drivers could be held liable if an unresolved recall issue causes a crash. According to the Association of British Insurers, failure to inform a car insurance provider of a recall notice could invalidate their cover if they need to make a claim.
Owners unwilling to wait indefinitely for a repair could demand a courtesy car or a refund, according to the consumer rights expert Martyn James. The Consumer Rights Act entitles consumers to a repair, replacement or refund if a purchase is not as described, fit for purpose or of satisfactory quality. 'I would demand a timescale for a repair and if that turns out to be longer than is reasonable I'd ask to return the car,' James said. 'If Ford refuses, that's when you can start a small claims case.'
Owners can also complain to The Motor Ombudsman which said that Ford had only just informed it of the recall. A spokesperson said: 'We are in discussion with Ford as to their response to consumers who are affected by this issue, and clarification regarding when the work is to be undertaken on customer vehicles.'

Toyota's push against American dominance doesn't end there, though. The midsize Tacoma pickup leads its segment, but it isn't the only Japanese model in contention with Ford and Chevrolet. The Nissan Frontier managed to get an edge over the Ford Ranger last year. There's a lot to love about the 2025 Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier, but which model presents the best value? 2025 Toyota Tacoma Limited — Source: Toyota Versatility, connectivity, and affordability The Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier are outfitted for a variety of use cases, with several cab options and bed sizes to choose from. In contrast, both the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado are available in just one configuration: a crew cab with a five-foot bed. There's no single- or extended-cab body style or a longer bed available, and the Japanese midsize trucks are taking full advantage of that fact. 2025 Toyota Tacoma — Source: Toyota The 2025 Toyota Tacoma is available with a four-door double cab paired with a five-foot bed or a two-door extended cab (XtraCab) with a six-foot bed. Likewise, the Nissan Frontier is also available in two cab configurations. Performance and capability go hand-in-hand The 2025 Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier pack plenty of power that leads to rather impressive capability across their respective ranges. The former offers a bit more variety in terms of performance, though. While the Frontier comes with one powertrain across the range, the Tacoma's powertrain can vary based on the trim level and transmission. 2025 Toyota Tacoma — Source: Toyota The 2025 Toyota Tacoma is one of the few models left in the industry to offer a six-speed manual transmission, although it is limited to double-cab models. When paired with the manual transmission, the Tacoma's 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generates 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. If power comes channeled through an eight-speed automatic transmission, expect performance to fall to 228 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque in the base SR trim. Most Tacoma models come equipped with a more powerful 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. That combination delivers 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped, the 2025 Toyota Tacoma can tow up to 6,500 lbs. and haul up to 1,705 lbs. Source: Nissan The Nissan Frontier offers a much simpler setup compared to the Tacoma. All Frontier models come equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 engine, producing 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. That power is channeled through a nine-speed transmission, regardless of trim level. When properly equipped, the Frontier can tow up to 7,150 lbs. and haul 1,610 lbs. Toyota Tacoma's hybrid edge It's no secret that Toyota has been giving its lineup the hybrid treatment, and the Toyota Tacoma is no exception. There are five hybrid Tacoma trims to choose from, the most affordable of which is the TRD Sport i-FORCE Max, priced from $46,320. Like in the gas-only version, the hybrid Tacoma comes equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. 2025 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter — Source: Toyota Pairing the Tacoma's four-cylinder engine with an electric motor does wonders for the midsize pickup's performance. The hybrid powertrain puts out 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, a massive improvement on paper. It does add weight, though, which means that the increase in power doesn't go as far as you'd hope. The hybrid powertrain is optional on some trim levels, but it's the sole powerhouse on the off-road Trailhunter and TRD Pro trims. Interestingly, the hybrid version of the Tacoma isn't all that efficient compared to the standard model, either. While the gas-only Tacoma is rated for 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, the hybrid Tacoma earns better fuel economy on urban streets, up to 23 mpg, but falters on the highway, earning up to 24 mpg. To top it off, the hybrid model can only tow up to 6,000 lbs., 500 lbs. less than the standard Tacoma. 2025 Nissan Frontier — Source: Nissan Final thoughts Despite neither model matching the towing specs of the Chevrolet Colorado and Ford Ranger, both the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier are giving American trucks a run for their money. One could argue that the variety of available body styles and bed sizes gives the Japanese pickups a distinct advantage over the likes of Ford and Chevy. B4239 in Newport reopens after St Brides crash closed road
A crash involving a single vehicle was reported at Lighthouse Road on Thursday. Gwent Police confirmed they received a report of a road traffic collision on Lighthouse Road, St Brides, involving a black Ford Kuga. Authorities closed the B4239 in both directions in order to retrieve the vehicle. Recovery teams were sent to retrieve the vehicle. The incident, first reported on Thursday afternoon, caused slow traffic and congestion in the area. A detour was put in place, affecting local routes including bus service 31. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash. By Friday morning, police confirmed that the vehicle had been recovered and the road fully reopened.

Ford Recalls Nearly 500,000 Vehicles, See If Yours Is Affected
Yet another recall from the Blue Oval According to a new report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration dated May 27, 2025, Detroit-based automaker Ford is issuing a recall affecting nearly half a million older iterations of its popular Explorer family SUV due to a potentially hazardous defect involving the vehicle and those around it on the road. The massive recall covers 492,145 Ford Explorers produced between June 11, 2015, and April 19, 2017, in the 2016 and 2017 model years. The NHTSA said in its report that the 'driver and front passenger door B-pillar trim appliques' (the little pieces of black plastic above the front driver and passenger side door handles) might detach from the vehicle while driving, which can be a hazard for other road users and increase the risk of a crash. 2016 Ford Explorer — Source: Jeremy Korzeniewski According to the NHTSA, drivers of affected vehicles may recognize the problem if they see the B-pillar trim separating from the rest of the front doors when they enter and exit the vehicle, or notice any rattling or wind noise from the B-pillar areas when they drive. What caused this issue? The NHTSA says that the root of the cause may have resulted from a combination of factors, including a design change that added a foam donut to the adhesive side of the B-pillar panel which increased outward reaction force on the part, as well as, 'inconsistent usage of hand rollers used to ensure complete adhesion of the part to door sheet metal during installation at the vehicle assembly plant.' The Federal agency's report reveals that the Ford Motor Co. first recognized the problem as far back as July 4, 2019, when it published a technical service bulletin to direct dealers on how to repair loose driver side B-pillar trim appliques on Explorers due to potential lack of adhesive, which at the time, it did not consider it an 'unreasonable risk to safety.' This insight emerged from an in-depth investigation in which engineers scrutinized doors sourced from local scrap yards at Ford's Central Labs. They also delved into a collection of photographs depicting parts that were reported to have detached, focusing on the specifics of each claim.
