Belfast Milers Meet kicks off athletics summer

BBC News09-05-2025

World-class Canadian athlete Gabriela DeBues-Stafford will lead the entries at Saturday's Belfast Irish Milers Meet which once again is set to be held in perfect sunny conditions at the Mary Peters Track.Event director Eamonn Christie has had the good fortunate of having the weather gods on his side in recent years and the athletes have responded by producing a series of brilliant runs in Belfast. These included last year's astonishing breakthrough by 17-year-old English talent Phoebe Gill, who broke the 45-year-old European Under-18 800m record when smashing her personal best with a one minute 57.86 triumph. The performance propelled the St Alban's athlete to the Paris Olympics where she went on to reach the 800m semi-finals.Gill was set to return to the Mary Peters Track this year only for injury to rule her out but Christie has still been able to assemble a strong entries list.
DeGues-Stafford fifth in Tokyo
Canadian DeGues-Stafford finished fifth in the 1500m at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 when she clocked her personal best of 3:58.93 as Faith Kipyegon, Laura Muir and Sifan Hassan clinched the medals. Now coached in Edinburgh by 1988 Olympic 3,000m steeplechase bronze medallist Mark Rowland, the 29-year-old had a couple of comparatively disappointing campaigns in 2023 and 2002 and didn't compete in Paris last year. However under Rowland's guidance, DeGues-Stafford is now plotting her second coming and has told Christie that she is targeting a brisk 8:40 pace in the 3,000m, which would be less that seven seconds outside her personal best of 8:33.92 set indoors in 2022."The plan is that two pacemakers will get Gabriela to halfway," Christie told BBC Sport NI."It's her first race of the year so she admits she doesn't know exactly what shape she's in but the plan is to attack the race."
The men's 800m field will include twice British champion Daniel Rowden, who set his personal best of 1:43.95 in 2023.That time is considerably faster that the 1:44.79 achieved by last year's Belfast winner Callum Dodds when Tom Randolph also went under 1:45.Rowden's rivals will include his fellow Britons Justin Davies and Tiarnan Croken, who bettered the 1:46 mark 12 months ago, plus Spaniard Ignacio Fontes, who reached the Olympic 1500m final in Tokyo. While it's unlikely that anybody will be clocking 1:57, the two-minute barrier could again be under threat in the women's 800m with emerging Britons Erin Wallace, Abigail Ives and Shaikira King in the field and Jenna Bromell leading the Irish challenge.Wallace finished second behind Gill last year when she was just outside two minutes while Ives clocked her personal best of 1:59.92 at the meeting in 2023 when finishing second behind Ireland's Louise Shanahan. The men's 1500m has the makings of a good race with Cork athlete Darragh McElhinney taking on a field that includes four-minute miler and Ciara Mageean's boyfriend Thomas Moran plus English pair Max Wharton and Alex Melloy, who both have bettered 3:40 for the distance. The local challenge in the men's metric mile is likely to be led by Callum Morgan and UCD student and Lagan Valley club athlete Lughaidh Mallon. There will be much interest in Bori Akinola's performance in the 100m following an impressive winter campaign which saw him reach the 60m semi-finals at the European Indoor Championships after dethroning Israel Olatunde to win the Irish title.

FIA suspend key figure ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix after his 'unauthorised comments' on Max Verstappen and George Russell

A Formula One steward has been suspended from his role ahead of this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix after making 'unauthorised' comments in the media. Derek Warwick, the former F1 driver, has been stood down for the race after delivering his verdict on an incident between Max Verstappen and George Russell. Last week, Warwick, 70, insisted the 10-second penalty given to Verstappen after he collided with Russell during the Spanish Grand Prix was 'right'. Speaking to a gambling website, he said: 'Should [Verstappen] have done what he did with George Russell in Turn 5? Absolutely not. Did he get a penalty for it? Yes. 'Some people argue that Sebastian Vettel received a 10-second drive-through penalty in Baku [in 2017] when he deliberately drove into Lewis Hamilton. 'But if you look at the video of Max, it looks to me like he dived in but then turned away from George – the momentum just carried him into him.' Warwick then added: 'I'm not condoning it, I'm not saying it was right. It was absolutely wrong. The FIA rightly gave him a penalty. Should it have been harsher? I actually think they got it about right. 'Many would say he should have received a race ban as a deterrent for young karting drivers, and they're probably right.' A statement from the FIA read: 'After discussion, Derek acknowledges that his comments were ill-advised in his role as an FIA steward and has apologised. 'Derek will resume his duties as a steward in the forthcoming Austrian Grand Prix.' A former F1 driver is always one of the four stewards officiating at every grand prix and Warwick, a winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours, is one of the most senior officials. Warwick also gave his opinion on the struggles of Red Bull's second drivers and on Lewis Hamilton's difficult first season at Ferrari, saying his woes were an 'enigma'. Sky Sports pundit Martin Brundle leapt to Warwick's defence on Saturday, writing on social media: 'Derek Warwick is one of the most genuine and passionate people and racers I have ever known. He is a salt of the earth genuine guy. 'He's done so much for young racers and motorsport in general. Not least as an FIA Steward. He has my absolute support and friendship until my last breath.' Warwick is one of the most senior FIA stewards and raced in F1 between 1981 and 1993 Warwick has been temporarily replaced by Enrique Bernoldi in Canada, who will officiate from the FIA's remote operations centre in Geneva this weekend. He is the second steward to be punished by the FIA for publicly commenting on a race. Johnny Herbert was dropped in January after the governing body said his 'duties as an FIA steward and that of a media pundit were incompatible'.

WWE legend Brock Lesnar's daughter Mya makes history after winning NCAA national shot put title

BROCK LESNAR'S daughter Mya has reached new heights after setting a college record. The 23-year-old senior out of Colorado State threw 19.01 meters in the first round to win the NCAA shot put championship. 5 5 Since Loree Smith's 2005 victory in an outdoor event, she is the only Rams athlete to achieve so, and joins her former WWE star father in securing a national crown, with Brock, a heavyweight wrestler at Minnesota winning an NCAA title back in 2000. Mya, who had won the indoor championship in 2024, is keen to make her own way despite the talk around her famous dad. Mya's high throw of 62 feet, 4 1/2 inches was part of her incredible effort that helped seal the win. Every participant gets three chances, but Mya got an early edge by making a statement with a throw that exceeded 60 feet. At 61 feet, 10 1/4 inches, Illinois athlete Abria Smith's third throw put her in second place. Nevertheless, Mya easily won with her second-best throw of 61 feet, 11 inches. Her ecstatic father Brock watched from the stands as she would go on to keep the family name in the national rafters. The younger Lesnar earlier won the NCAA indoor shot put title in 2024, making him just the sixth Colorado State athlete to earn outdoor gold. Mya is now the only athlete in program history to win both indoor and outdoor championships. After transferring from Arizona State to CSU, Mya became one of the country's best collegiate throwers under coach Brian Bedard. She came into this week's competition as the top seed in the country after placing sixth at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Last summer, she would go on to win an Olympic bronze with her personal best score of 64 feet, 3 3/4 inches. "Heck yeah it was. It was pretty awesome," Lesnar said to the school's athletics website, on her triumph. "Obviously throws like that don't happen often, and to do it on my first one was pretty cool. I just went calm, hit my cues. [Rams coach Brian] Bedard and I have tons of trust, and that's exactly what we did." As stated, her achievements echoes her famous father. Brocl came back from a losing position in double overtime to win 3-2 in one of the most thrilling tournament finals ever. In addition to starting a career that would include celebrity status in the WWE, UFC, and a brief NFL stint, that victory culminated a 50-2 record at Minnesota. 5 5 His daughter's ascent to NCAA greatness now partially matches his remarkably powerful athletic past. Since his final in-ring performance at SummerSlam 2023, Brock has been absent from the professional wrestling industry.
