More members, more profit: Police co-op posts ‘impressive' RM50m profit, raises dividends
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Koperasi Polis Diraja Malaysia Berhad (KPDRM) announced a dividend distribution of 5.8 per cent for 2024 on subscription capital and 9.2 per cent on share capital to members, with a total distribution of RM36.14 million.
KPDRM president and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the distribution showed an increase of 0.3 per cent for subscription capital and 2.2 per cent on share capital compared to the previous year.
'In the cooperative's 97 years of existence, this is the first time such an impressive dividend has been distributed to KPDRM members,' he said when speaking in conjunction with KPDRM's 90th Annual General Meeting here today.
Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Ministry of Human Resources secretary-general Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud.
Commenting further, Razarudin said KPDRM recorded a profit of RM50.14 million for the year 2024, compared to RM45.02 million in 2023.
'This is influenced by the increase in the number of KPDRM members from 114,608 in 2023, to 119,922 in 2024, involving an increase of 5,314 people.
'In this regard, the subscription capital also increased to RM586.6 million in 2024 compared to RM558 million in 2023, an increase of 4.9 per cent equivalent to RM28.6 million,' he said.
In addition, Razarudin said the share capital also increased to 11 per cent equivalent to RM2.9 million from RM20.5 million in 2023 to RM23.04 million in 2024.
At the ceremony, the Prime Minister also presented insurance compensation to nine relatives of Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) members who died in a road accident in Teluk Intan, Perak, in May. — Bernama

Iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class goes electric — making its bold Malaysian debut at FashionWeek KL
PETALING JAYA, June 14 — The Mercedes-Benz G-Class EV is being officially showcased for the first time in Malaysia. Its first appearance in our market is being timed with the Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Kuala Lumpur (MBFWKL) 2025. Hence, you can take a look at the new G-Class EV from June 13 June until June 15, at The Exchange TRX shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur. The previous G-Class model that was made available in Malaysia is the Mercedes-AMG G63 which was just launched here last November. Mercedes-Benz G-Class EV quick specs As Mercedes has phased out the EQ prefix from its EV, the official name for this fully-electric G-Class model is actually quite handful: the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. For the sake of simplicity, that's why we just prefer to call it the G-Class EV. Aesthetically, it is not hard to separate the G-Class EV from its gas-guzzling counterparts (G 550/G 63) anyway, even though it still have the series' signature boxy design. Being a fully electric model, the G-Class EV has a different front grille design that also includes an LED outline. We don't have information regarding the Malaysian specs just yet but the unit that is shown at MBFWKL has a right-hand drive setup and a square box instead of the usual circular case that holds a spare tire. Owners can use this box to store things like charging cables and tools. The G-Class EV also has some features that are not available with its petrol counterparts. One such feature is called the G-Turn (or, the tank turn, as most call it), which allows the EV to rotate up to 720-degree on its own axis. As Mercedes has phased out the EQ prefix from its EV, the official name for this fully-electric G-Class model is actually quite handful: the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. — SoyaCincau pic Aside from that, the G-Class EV also has a wading depth of 850mm (0.85m), which is 150mm more than the petrol version. There are also other features, such as the G-Steering and intelligent Offroad Crawl functionalities. Performance-wise, the SUV features four electric motors with a combined output of 432kW (579hp) alongside 1,164Nm of torque. Powered by a 116kWh lithium-ion battery, the G-Class EV offers a WLTP-rated range of up to 473km. This EV also comes with an 11kW AC onboard charger and supports a DC charging speed of up to 200kW. In terms of charging time, it takes around 12 hours to go from 10 per cent to 100 per cent, while with DC charging, it is much faster at 32 minutes to recharge the battery from 10 per cent to 80 per cent. As noted earlier, the Malaysian specs of the G-Class EV have not yet been announced. So, we have no information regarding its price tag but we don't think it will cost more than the Mercedes-AMG G63, which has an eye-watering price of around RM1.9 million. — SoyaCincau

Govt allocates RM30m to upskill journalists in AI
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced a total allocation of RM30 million to help media practitioners upskill and keep pace with artificial intelligence (AI) developments. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the National Journalists' Day celebration here today, Anwar said the funding was intended to provide support and training, particularly for younger journalists, to ensure they were well-equipped for technological advancements. "As part of efforts to strengthen the national media ecosystem and ensure its sustainability, the government has agreed to allocate RM30 million to assist media organisations in the country in carrying out digital transformation and adopting new technologies in content production. "By any means necessary, we aim to ensure that digital transformation takes place, with government funding, training and exposure for journalists, especially the younger generation, to ensure that the journalism world does not fall behind in keeping pace with developments in AI, while also continuing to achieve a balance in the use of AI," he said, adding that this was the largest allocation ever provided by the government for journalists since independence. Present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching and Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai. Anwar said the media industry must place greater emphasis on emerging industries, new technologies, current challenges, digitalisation and the readiness to adapt to change. He said that although these posed challenges for the media, core priorities must not be neglected. "Let us not sideline our priorities, defending our values and ethics, which are grounded in truth and justice," he said. Anwar said that as prime minister, he does not hold absolute power and is not granted complete freedom, as no country in the world guarantees total, unrestricted freedom, and that the role of a prime minister is bound by the Federal Constitution. "Our challenge is to reach for the skies (menggapai langit), to strive for progress and ambition. "Among the key challenges we face are issues such as ethnic competition, which is permissible. "However, racial hostility will only undermine and threaten the unity of a nation. The same goes for religion. "But we must not set aside our core priorities, which are to defend our values and ethics, which are rooted in truth and justice. These are what ground us. "One is bound by the framework and spirit of the constitution. Bound, too, by systems and the balance of power in governance, as well as by the counsel and guidance of the Malay Rulers, to ensure national harmony and civility," he said. Citing the concept of manufacturing consent by economist Edward S. Herman and public intellectual Noam Chomsky, Anwar urged media practitioners to reject not only that concept but also the manufacturing of dissent. He added that while differences of opinion were acceptable, they should not lead to manipulation, distortion of perception, insults or personal attacks. "Just as we reject the tyranny of the majority, a warning so aptly made by Thomas Jefferson, we must not use power to oppress or suppress others. "We have seen that small groups, such as terrorists, though a minority, can also impose a tyranny on the minority. "As such, there must be a balance. We must learn to make the best use of our freedoms and the information available to us, ensuring there is no oppression by those in power, while also preventing any form of suppression by extremist groups or reckless actors who, in their desperation for power, manufacture dissent and create a tyranny of the minority. "Our challenge today is that we are not only engaging with the mainstream media, where people read, analyse, evaluate and offer critique, but also with the widespread influence of social media," he said.
