
The Seven Wonders of the World travel guide: A bucket list for ancient travellers

Throughout her career, historian and documentary producer Bettany Hughes has always maintained her sense of wonder at the cultures and the monuments humanity has brought into existence.
Her latest book, The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, focuses on the seven ancient monuments that back in the 4th century BCE were listed as a set worthy of wonder — awe-inspiring structures that epitomized human imagination and ambition.
Those wonders include the Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the lighthouse of Alexandria, and the Temple of Artemis, among others.
"I feel more hopeful about the future as a historian. That we have survived and we are still creating beautiful things. And the wonders are almost a kind of touchstone of that, for those generations of the past," Hughes said.
In October, IDEAS host Nahlah Ayed joined Bettany Hughes to discuss the power of wonder, as captured in the seven wonders of the world. The event was recorded in front of an audience at the Toronto Reference Library.
Here is an excerpt from their conversation.
I want to start with the big picture, and that is the word 'wonder.' Wonder is at the very heart of your exploration. What does wonder require of us?
The word wonder comes from old Germanic roots. And it means something to marvel at. And wonder is a state, a feeling. What I adore about wonder is that it's something that you can be completely saturated with as an individual. But possibly more importantly, it encourages us to share that feeling of awe and enthrall and to communicate it.
I had a very emotional reason for writing this book and a very academic one. And the academic one was just there's a lot of very cool archeology telling us how these seven wonders were built. But also what I see through time is in very good times and very bad, as a species we crave wonder. We crave that sense that we can achieve beyond the possibility of the individual, that if we collaborate, we can produce extraordinary things we want to share.
We want to talk about the biggest, the best, the tallest, the longest. The pyramid is still the heaviest building created by human hand. And we want to share those ideas. So for me, it's something which as a hyper-social species we crave — and we need wonder.
Could you talk about that first list that documents what is wondrous in the world? How did the sense of wonder play a part in making it happen?
Yes, there is a list that was set down around 2,300 years ago. And incredibly, we have very early extant fragments of that original list on a bit of papyrus. It's called Laterculi Alexandrini, which gives us the clue that this was almost certainly written in the great city of Alexandria, in Egypt and northern Africa. The Laterculi Alexandrini, brilliantly, is a list of the seven wonders of the ancient world, but it's also a list of lists.
It lists the seven tallest mountains, the seven finest springs, the seven best artists, the seven best generals. And that tells us something about the time and the people who wrote this list. This is the Hellenistic age. It's after Alexander the Great has died and his empire is carved up by those who followed him. And there's this notion at that time that you can manage the world rationally, that, up until then, there's been this notion of chaos and kind of exploration. But now, because Aristotle is the main philosopher and he loved rational thinking, if we did lists, we somehow make sense of the world.
[The list] is not just praising these monuments. It's also kind of a bucket list. It's saying whether you're rich or poor these are the seven things that you should see before you die. And so as time goes on, the lists are really practical. They're travel guides in effect. There's a guy called Philo of Byzantium, who's one of the authors. And if you read that, I mean, he literally says, 'don't go and dock at that harbour in Rhodes. Otherwise, pirates will steal all your luggage.

Kind of like a lonely planet. Yeah.
But how would you have decided at the time? What criteria would determine what sites would actually be included in this list?
We're talking about the Hellenistic age. So the classical world has preceded you. Ancient Egypt has gone before. So there are lots of beautiful monuments in the eastern Mediterranean and in North Africa. It is definitely — and I'm not being crude here — a size matters list. These are all enormous structures. So there's a monumentality about all of them.
But I think there's more than that because they're choosing these things because each and everyone says something very special about the people who made it and about us as a species. They incarnate a very different drive, each and every one of them. And as I said, you could visit all of them. So that's the thing. They were all achievable within a boat sail of the Mediterranean. Or if you wanted to be brave and head out to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, then you went further east.
So that makes sense of why they were chosen back then. I'm curious if you could tell me why that list has staying power?
I think it's both because they are extraordinary buildings. I mean, if you think about it, they're nuts, a lot of them. I often imagined when these things were being built, they must have been these kinds of equivalents of ancient planning, committee rooms with people sitting around tables and going, 'it will never work. You're going to put this bronze statue over 100 feet high. It will fall down.' There must have been a lot of naysayers. So I think actually, the sheer skill and ambition and technicality of each of these is extraordinary.
But yeah, the temple of Artemis for Ephesus is twice the size of the Parthenon in Athens on the Acropolis. So it was their size and their exceptional nature. And because people talked about them genetically, we remember them, we remember their significance.
The amount of detail that you go into makes every one of these locations so vivid. It feels as though you've seen them all. But we know that although you've been to the locations that some of them don't exist at all. I'd like to start with the oldest and the only one that's still intact, and that is the Great Pyramid of Giza. Could you take us back to 4,000 and paint a picture of what that pyramid would have been like in its infancy?
Yes. Wow. I mean, awe-inspiring. I've been and I still am never not speechless in front of it. It is the most extraordinary building. It's made of 2.3 million individual limestone blocks, and 6.5 million tons worth of material.
There's a series of archeological discoveries on the Red Sea at a place called Wadi al-Jarf, which are telling us how the pyramid was built, And I'll give you more detail on that because it doesn't get better than this as a discovery. But just imagine we're there 4,600 years ago banished from your mind this notion of pyramids in the desert. This was a river landscape. The River Nile and its tributaries ran much closer to the great pyramids and to those that came afterwards.
And so in the inundation, the pyramid would be reflected like an infinity pool in the water. There was clover there. There were Tamarisk trees. There are hippopotamus bones. So we think that baby hippopotamus were actually frolicking around and unfortunately being eaten because hippopotamus is very tasty if you're an ancient.
The Nile was this beautiful water, absolutely humming with the blue lotus. So there's exquisite colour. It wasn't what we think. It wasn't this kind of dune landscape. And then you have the pyramid itself cased in this gleaming white, highly polished Tura limestone. It would have looked like a sci-fi movie. I mean, without a doubt, it would have been this incredible, sharp-edged shape with a kind of gleaming capstone made of a mixture of gold and silver. It would have been extraordinary and awesome.
You wrote that the purpose of your book was to ask, 'why we wonder why we create and why we choose to remember the wonder of others.' Have you come up with an answer?
It was a very hopeful thing writing this book, because what I've learned through the writing of this is that if we wonder, we engage. And if we engage, we connect. And if we connect, we understand. And if we understand, we care. So it feels to me that wonder can be a catalyst for caring.
I would say that's what I've learned, that it allows us to understand that if we collaborate, we can achieve extraordinary things. We all know that we're living in quite wonderful times, but this proves to us that we can privilege beauty and ambition and collaboration.
And also wonders are a statement that there will be a future because there has to be a generation beyond the creation of a wonder who will appreciate it and adore it. They knew that when they were building it, they built it for them, but they also built it for beyond so that they're acts of hope, these wonders.

Cowan: Future is hazy for Canadiens centre Kirby Dach
Kent Hughes knew the Canadiens had a lack of depth at the centre position when he took over as GM three years ago. Article content That's why at his first NHL Entry Draft as GM in 2022, Hughes traded a first-round pick and a third-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Kirby Dach. As a result, Hughes will head into this off-season once again looking for a second-line centre who can play behind captain Nick Suzuki, either through free agency or a trade. Article content Article content Dach had 10-12-22 totals and was a team-worst minus-29 before suffering a season-ending injury to his right knee that required surgery for the second straight year. He won only 40.3 per cent of his faceoffs. Article content The top centres eligible to become free agents on July 1 are Florida's Sam Bennett, 29, Toronto's John Tavares, 34, Colorado's Brock Nelson, 33, and Dallas's Matt Duchene, 34. Naturalistic gardening is a style that can be more beautiful than a traditional garden, says Nik Friesen-Hughes, a landscape designer and owner of Dogwood Landscape Design Build. 'It checks a lot of the boxes. It can be less maintenance in the long run, it can be healthier ecologically, and it can save on your water bill,' he says. Naturalistic design is generally defined as a plant-driven approach to landscape design inspired by wild plant communities, he explains. 'It seeks to loosely imitate the patterns and dynamics found in natural ecosystems and looks at plant communities and their interactions. Plants are selected for resilience, overall structure and shape, as well as interest throughout all the seasons.' A key component of a naturalistic style is that even the smallest residential garden can provide a lot of ecological value. Native plants are a great way of supporting local ecology, but it's not essential to include only native plants in your design, says Friesen-Hughes. In addition, he says, while the naturalistic style often uses a wide variety of plant species, designs do not have to become chaotic or messy or unreadable. 'Having a diversity of plant forms and textures can create a feeling of naturalness, but the most important thing is to find balance and have a succession of blooms and resources for pollinators at different times of the year,' says Friesen-Hughes. There are ways that you can have a naturalistic garden space that achieves many of your goals, and design and layout are key, says Friesen-Hughes. Piet Oudolf, the famed Dutch landscape designer, uses the example of a fruitcake, says Friesen-Hughes, and classifies a naturalistic planting into three types: the matrix, primary plants and scatter plants. 'The matrix is the groundcover layer, and its main function is to provide cover for the soil and a soft visual backdrop for other plants,' says Friesen-Hughes. 'You want plants that provide soft colours, shapes and textures that are good at staying tidy and holding space. This is going to make up the majority of your planting. Grasses are a great choice.' Some of Friesen-Hughes' favourite grasses with soft textures include Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), a striking ornamental grass with blue-green foliage, Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis), a short, clump-forming grass with narrow, arching leaves, Blue Oat Grass (Helictotrichon sepervirens), which has steely blue foliage, and Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis acutiflora), which has showy, wheat- coloured plumes in the fall. 'Next, you want to think about the primary plants, and these are plants that have coarser texture and strong structure,' says Friesen-Hughes. Nik Friesen-Hughes photo This naturalistic design shows a variety of texture, forms and structure. Plants include Culver's Root in the foreground, Wild Bergamot on the left and Giant Hyssop in the background. Examples include Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), Giant Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) and Joe Pye (Eupatorium maculatum). 'Joe Pye has large, coarse leaves arranged in a whorled pattern along the stem. This plant provides significant structure throughout the warm season as well as in the winter.' Culver's Root (Veronicastrum virginicum) is a striking example of a perennial which provides year-round structure in the garden with its unique candelabra-like flower spires. Scatter plants are like the sprinkles on the cake, he says. 'These are the plants that might rise up here and there for a little pop of colour, like a swamp milkweed or perhaps Verbena bonariensis.' With a more traditional planting, there are easy to read patterns or hard lines (straight lines and angles), says Friesen-Hughes, but with a naturalistic planting there are no specific rules in terms of how you arrange your plants. 'You can have loose patterns and forms, which I think is beautiful. Small planting groups can exist within your matrix layer to give a sense of definition and clarity and create a bigger visual impact.' For example, Purple Coneflower Magnus (Echinacea purpurea) and Meadow Blazing Star (Liatris ligulistylis) are two very versatile native plants, says Friesen-Hughes. 'I would put them in a group, say, seven or 11 of each, but it would be a loose drift so they wouldn't be right next to each other. If you were looking at it from above, they would be planted about 30 cm or so apart. I would repeat them very closely in a small area with grasses in between to create a wave of Blazing Star and a wave of Echinacea coming up through the grasses. It would be like putting a brushstroke on your painting.' Little Bluestem and Magnus coneflower would also work well together in a loose drift, he says. One species of plant can also be planted in a group. Great examples include turtlehead (Chelone), tall meadow rue (Thalictrum dasycarpum), or yarrow (Achillea millefolium). 'I love the meadow rue cultivar — Hewitt's Double — that grows in the outdoor gardens at The Leaf,' says Friesen-Hughes. 'The native variety of yarrow is great for planting in groups but it's a little short-lived. My favourite is a cultivar called Achillea Terracotta which has shades of yellow, orange and terracotta. It's reliable and versatile.' Whatever species you choose to plant in a group, says Friesen-Hughes, think of it as being integrated within the other layers in the garden. The British designer Gertrude Jekyll popularized the idea of planting in drifts. 'I think this is really key,' says Friesen-Hughes. 'You're not creating a square or a circle again and again, but rather longer, thinner, winding, looser shapes. When you have these more organic winding forms, they create a variety of angles for different groups to be viewed in different ways instead of just seeing them from one angle. It makes a planting more dynamic, but it also creates interest and opportunities for plants to interact with other plants along the edges. The looser shapes allow for more interesting plant interactions and combinations to occur.' He says that another bonus of utilizing loose drifts throughout a naturalistic planting is that you don't have to worry from year to year if one plant dies. 'Overall, the patterns are kind of intact. Rigid straight lines and angles often require more maintenance.' When thinking about patterns in a naturalistic design, repetition and rhythm — repeating plants or groups at different distances in different shapes — can create a visual connection throughout your planting and give it a sense of cohesion, says Friesen-Hughes. 'If you have a few Prairie Dropseed grasses in one area and a few in another, repeating that grouping two or three times in a small space can help ground that planting.' A beautiful example of repetition and arrangement can be seen at the Wellington Prairie Garden located along Wellington Crescent in Sir John Franklin Park near the footbridge. Friesen-Hughes collaborated with the Winnipeg Wildflower Project to design the garden, which provides a habitat node for urban pollinators. In one area, there are repeating groups of Stiff Goldenrod (Solidago rigida), Giant Hyssop, Wild Bergamot, Prairie Sage and False Sunflower. 'In time, the grass matrix of Sheep Fescue (Festuca ovina) and Little Bluestem will fill in between the other plant species.' Species of goldenrod, aster and sedum are hugely beneficial for pollinators, says Friesen-Hughes. Monthly What you need to know now about gardening in Winnipeg. The healthiest landscape ecologically, says Friesen-Hughes, is a landscape that embraces change. How to digitize your most important documents — without getting overwhelmed
With wildfires, floods and other emergencies all too common of late, it's worth asking, if you had to leave your home in a hurry, would your important documents be easy to grab and take with you? Canada's Emergency Preparedness Guide recommends making copies of important documents — like birth and marriage certificates, passports, licences, wills, land deeds and insurance paperwork — and keeping them in a safe place both inside and outside of your home. You could put them in a safety deposit box or give them to friends or family who live out of town. That way, you have a backup in case the originals are destroyed, damaged or have to be left behind. And in addition to having physical copies, you may want to make digital versions as they can be easier to access in an emergency. But let's face it, organizing and scanning all those papers can feel overwhelming, and it's tempting to put it off. To help you get started, we asked archivist June Chow and digitization expert Jeff Marceil for tips on everything from image size to naming your files, so you can finally get organized and rest easy, knowing you're prepared. Use a scanner While your phone camera and document-scanning apps may be convenient, both experts strongly recommend using a scanner for best results. A photo of a document is better than nothing, but could be missing important details due to resolution, tone or hue, and might not be sufficient for government bodies like the Canada Revenue Agency. Chow, an archivist with the Toronto Reference Library, says a flatbed scanner is a good investment, but you may be able to use one for free at a public library. You can specify the resolution, file type and other details for each document, and you won't have to worry about lighting issues like you would when you're taking a photo. Of course, if you're short on time or have boxes of documents or photo prints you want scanned, there are businesses that can do this quickly and accurately for a fee. Think about format and resolution The first step is to determine if what you're digitizing is text or images — and if it's worth the time and effort to scan, store and manage the files. "Don't try to digitize everything just because the technology exists and is available," Chow said. Marceil — a project manager at Micro Com Systems, which specializes in document scanning and data capture for businesses in B.C. — suggests scanning documents at 300 DPI (dots per inch), and photos at 600 DPI. "As far as legibility [for documents], if you go higher, you're just creating [a] larger file size," he said. "It gets a little bit better, but not enough to justify the higher file size." Also, scanning your documents in black and white and saving the files as a PDF (recommended for most documents) or a TIFF using Group 4 compression will keep the original image data intact while often taking up less space on your hard drive. "A lot of times people scan things in colour, and it's just then you're using JPEG compression, and it's not as good," Marceil said. "[Group 4 compression] is also considered a lossless compression, which means … when you [open the file], there's no loss of the image quality." Of course, it all depends on what you're using the digital files for. "When we do digitization for preservation, it's done at high resolution [and] often results in TIFF file formats and very big files," Chow said. But if you want a file that is quick to open and easy to share, consider saving your images as JPEGs, which are smaller and suitable for viewing on a screen. Finally, if you're scanning a document that's several pages long, Marceil suggests creating a multi-page PDF rather than scanning each page individually. "Even the cheapie big-box-store scanners, they've got software that'll allow you to create a multi-page … file," he said. Some scanning software uses optical character recognition (OCR) to make printed documents searchable — handy when you need to find a specific receipt. Use logical naming conventions "However you are searching for your documents now — whether it's alphabetical order or numerical order or by subject or something like that — in the digital world, you should save things pretty much the same way," Marceil said. "Because when you end up with thousands of files or thousands of documents, you want to name them something logical so that you'll be able to find them later." For example, if you're digitizing personal documents for your family, the names of the files for each person could start with their first name so that everything is automatically grouped together in the folder. Or for all paperwork related to a specific property, the file names could start with the address or street name. Ideally, you want to make a few copies of each file and store them in different places and on different platforms. "It's not an issue of storing files on the cloud versus your computer hard drive versus a CD — it's actually all of them," Chow said. "It's an and-and-and relationship." Just be sure to use encrypted folders and require a password for sensitive documents. Chow says creating a digital copy protects valuable records and documents against loss or damage. But remember to update your digital records as your physical documents expire or are replaced.
