Beware! Repeat traffic violations could soon lead to license suspension: Details

Repeat traffic violations could soon lead to license suspension.
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is preparing to introduce a
points-based system
to monitor
driver behaviour
. Much like the models already in place in countries such as the USA, Germany, and Canada, this system will assign points for every traffic offence. Moreover, accumulating too many of them could lead to a suspended or even cancelled driving licence.
Point-based system for traffic violation: All you need to know
The proposal was discussed during a recent brainstorming session on road safety, attended by government officials, NGOs,
road safety
experts, and other stakeholders. The ministry shared an early framework of the new system, which will not only penalise errant drivers with demerit points but also reward responsible road users with merit points. These will include good samaritans and those demonstrating safe driving behaviour.
Despite introducing steeper fines in 2019 under the amended
Motor Vehicles Act
,
road fatalities
have remained alarmingly high, with over 1.7 lakh deaths reported every year. Officials believe that a penalty points system, when backed by robust
digital enforcement
infrastructure, will serve as a more effective deterrent.

One of the significant proposals under this plan is to make driving tests mandatory for licence renewals if a motorist has a history of
traffic violations
. The ministry also intends to introduce learner's licences for low-speed electric vehicles, specifically those under 1,500 watts and 25 kmph.
Interestingly, this isn't the first time such a system has been proposed. Back in 2011, an expert panel headed by former transport secretary S Sunder recommended licence suspension after 12 points were accumulated in three years, and cancellation for repeat offenders. However, the lack of infrastructure made nationwide implementation unfeasible at the time.

India in talks with China over rare earth exports, aims for predictability in trade, Maruti cuts EV output

India is actively engaging with China to ensure stability and predictability in trade-related supply chains, following Beijing's recent curbs on rare earth exports that have disrupted the global automotive sector. 'We are in touch with the Chinese side, both here in Delhi as also in Beijing, to bring predictability in supply chain for trade, consistent with international practices,' External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a press briefing on Thursday. China's export restrictions on key rare earth materials have caused concern among automakers worldwide. Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, has scaled back near-term production targets for its first electric vehicle due to raw material shortages, Reuters reported earlier this week. The company aimed to produce just 8,000 units by September—down sharply from the originally planned 26,000+ units. The shortfall followed China's move to tighten export restrictions on key rare earth elements and magnets—materials essential for electric vehicle motors. Since April 4, Beijing mandated special licences for exporting seven types of rare earths, including samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, and lutetium. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Upto 15% Discount for Salaried Individuals ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo These materials played a vital role in EV propulsion systems and other high-tech applications such as missiles and defense electronics. 'As of now, there is no impact on production,' Maruti Suzuki Chairman R.C. Bhargava said earlier this week. However, supply-side risks remained, as China controlled over 90% of global processing capacity for these crucial materials. Meanwhile, Several Indian automakers sought government intervention to expedite approvals from Chinese authorities through local vendors for importing rare earth magnets. However, no licences had been granted, resulting in growing uncertainty across the EV and hybrid vehicle manufacturing sectors. Rare earth magnets are critical components in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), which are used in EVs for their high torque, efficiency, and compact design. While internal combustion engine vehicles used them more sparingly—such as in electric power steering—their importance in electrified powertrains was substantial. Mercedes-Benz sees surge in customisation; luxury EV sales up 66%

Mercedes-Benz India, which recently launched a collector's edition of the Mercedes-AMG G63 priced at ₹4.3 crore, says demand for customisation is rising in the top-end vehicle (TEV) segment, as buyers increasingly want their cars to stand out. Some customers are spending an additional ₹60 lakh to ₹1.5 crore on personalisation alone. Santosh Iyer, managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of Mercedes-Benz India, said this trend is being driven by a small, exclusive community of TEV owners who seek to differentiate their cars within their social circles. Customisation options include bespoke colours, personalised engravings on grab handles, and edition-specific branding. Mercedes also offers personalisation kits priced around ₹10 lakh. The company believes the appetite for customisation is growing — and not just among younger buyers. For models like the G63, nearly 75 per cent of units sold are personalised. For others, such as the Maybach S-Class, the figure is around 60 per cent. Iyer also highlighted the strong performance of luxury electric vehicles (EVs) this year, with industry volumes rising 66 per cent to cross 2,000 units in the first five months of 2025. Mercedes-Benz India's own EV sales grew 73 per cent, with EVs now accounting for 11 per cent of the luxury segment. As for the AMG G63 collector's edition, just 30 units will be offered in India. Bookings opened on Thursday. The special edition was developed in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz Research & Development India (MBRDI). 'At MBRDI, we are proud to have played a key role in shaping this India-inspired collector's edition of the AMG G63. With this edition, we aimed to go beyond performance and create a vehicle that resonates with India's unique identity,' said Manu Saale, MD and CEO, MBRDI.
