International Space Station too dangerous to stay in orbit, warns Musk

Elon Musk has called for the International Space Station (ISS) to be de-orbited 'within two years' amid concerns about the ageing facility's safety.
The billionaire owner of SpaceX, which sends astronauts and cargo up to the ISS regularly for Nasa, said parts of the station were 'simply getting too old'.
'Even though SpaceX earns billions of dollars from transporting astronauts & cargo to the ISS, I nonetheless would like to go on record recommending that it be de-orbited within two years,' Mr Musk posted on X, his social media platform.
The ISS is not scheduled to be brought back to Earth until 2030.
Mr Musk's comments follow Nasa's decision to postpone a commercial mission to the ISS, which is jointly run by the US, Russia, Japan, Canada and the European Union, that was previously scheduled for Friday.
Nasa said it was working with Russian space agency Roscosmos to investigate 'a new pressure signature' in a section of the station, called the Zvezda service module.
Zvezda hosts living quarters, life support systems, key electrical components and flight control and propulsion systems, according to Nasa's website.
Leaks were first detected aboard the ISS in 2019. Nasa has described the leaks, which are caused by microscopic cracks in the station's aluminium-based structure, as a 'top safety risk'.
Over time, the leaks have been growing worse – although experts say they are closer to a slow puncture in a tyre than a blowout.
Nevertheless, it means valuable air is being lost from the station, which is dependent on supply runs from Earth for oxygen, food, water and other essentials.
The cracks in the station, parts of which are now a quarter of a century old, are thought to be the result of general wear and tear to its largely aluminium-based structure.
In orbit, the ISS undergoes a constant cycle of cooling and heating that causes what is known as 'high cyclic fatigue' in its metal components, where tiny cracks can emerge. This is because aluminium becomes harder but more brittle over time as it is flexed.
Casey Handmer, an American physicist who previously worked at Nasa's jet propulsion laboratory, claimed that the problem was potentially far more serious than had been publicly acknowledged and could lead to a failure in orbit that put astronauts at serious risk.
There are seven people currently aboard the ISS.
'We could wake up tomorrow and find, with zero warning, that it has failed catastrophically,' Mr Handmer wrote on X.
'Whether that means a leak slow enough to close some hatches, get the crew out or at least into safer parts of the station, is a roll of the dice.
'It could also depressurise in less than a minute.'
On Thursday, Nasa said Russian cosmonauts had carried out repairs to the Zvezda section. However, the US space agency postponed the Axiom Mission 4 launch, which would have taken an Indian astronaut to the ISS, while investigations are carried out.
'The postponement of Axiom Mission 4 provides additional time for Nasa and Roscosmos to evaluate the situation and determine whether any additional troubleshooting is necessary,' Nasa said.
The Axiom Mission 4 launch will be carried out by Mr Musk's SpaceX, using both the company's Falcon 9 rocket and a Dragon capsule.
The billionaire threatened to decommission his Dragon capsules as part of a blazing public row with Donald Trump on social media.
However, Mr Musk has since said he regrets some of his comments during the spat and there has been no sign of him following through on the SpaceX threat.

Space tourism company Axiom Space has had to postpone its fourth chartered SpaceX flight to the International Space Station after NASA announced it needs more time to investigate an air leak affecting the orbital lab. For five years, NASA and its Russian counterpart Roscosmos have been hunting down leaks in the station, which has been continuously occupied for 25 years. The issue has since been traced back to the Russian segment of the ISS, specifically the Zvezda service module, and was identified as a "top safety risk," according to a 2024 report by NASA's inspector general. The delay highlights the deteriorating condition of the rapidly aging orbital lab, which is expected to host scientists for another five years before being retired with the help of SpaceX. Most recently, three cosmonauts occupying the station had inspected the inside walls of the module and its adjoining tunnel, sealing "additional areas of interest, and measured the current leak rate," according to a Thursday update by NASA. "Following this effort, the segment now is holding pressure," the agency said. While NASA says none of the station's current crew members are in any danger, Axiom's fourth mission remains on hold to give NASA and Roscosmos more time to "evaluate the situation and determine whether any additional troubleshooting is necessary." As a result, the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is still grounded at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The launch had already been delayed due to bad weather. Then, a liquid oxygen leak in SpaceX's rocket delayed the launch once more. For now, all Axiom can do is hold off on launching its crew of four astronauts, led by retired NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who has since joined Axiom. "This is the right thing to do," said Axiom executive chairman Kam Ghaffarian in a statement. "We will continue to work with all of our partners to finalize a new launch date." NASA is evaluating apparently successful efforts by Russian cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station to seal up small-but-persistent air leaks in a vestibule leading to an aft docking port, the U.S. space agency said Saturday. Pending additional analysis to verify the initial results, NASA said in a blog post the delayed launch of the privately-funded Axiom-4 research mission to the station could come as early as Thursday. The agency did not provide any additional launch details, but based on the space station's orbit and rendezvous requirements, a Thursday takeoff would be targeted for 4:53 a.m. EDT. If that schedule holds up, commander Peggy Whitson, Indian pilot Shubhanshu Shukla, Polish researcher Sławosz Uznański and Hungarian engineer Tibor Kapu would aim for a docking at the space-facing port of the station's Harmony module around 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The flight originally was planned for last Tuesday but it was repeatedly delayed, first by high winds in the off-shore emergency splashdown zone and then by troubleshooting to find an oxygen leak in the first stage of the crew's Falcon 9 rocket. While SpaceX worked to resolve the oxygen propellant leak, NASA managers decided they needed more time to assess recent efforts to stop or minimize air leaks in a Russian vestibule, known as the PrK, that serves as a passageway between the station's Zvezda module and spacecraft docked at its aft port. The leakage was first noticed in 2019 and up to now, efforts to seal them off have been unsuccessful. But on Friday, Roscosmos, the Russian federal space agency, reported cosmonauts aboard the station had successfully eliminated the leaks in the PrK. "Following the most recent repair, pressure in the transfer tunnel has been stable," NASA confirmed in a blog post Saturday. "This could indicate the small leaks have been sealed." The leak rates seen earlier could be related to "a small amount of air flowing into the transfer tunnel across the hatch seal from the main part of the station," NASA said. "By changing pressure in the transfer tunnel and monitoring over time, teams are evaluating the condition of the transfer tunnel configuration, resulting in an updated launch opportunity for the private astronaut mission." The flight is the fourth Crew Dragon launch chartered by Houston-based Axiom Space. Throughout the two-week mission, Whitson and her crewmates will carry out a full slate of science research and technology demonstrations, along with interactive educational events in the crew's home countries. They were trained for space station operations and will have full use of the U.S. segment of the orbital lab. "We've got a lot of objectives for our mission," Whitson said. "The first, obviously, is realizing the return of these three countries to space, but this will be their first time to go to the International Space Station." JWST spies frigid alien world on bizarre orbit: 'One of the coldest, oldest and faintest planets that we've imaged to date'

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has notched another milestone, capturing a direct image of a distant, frigid planet in a solar system unlike our own, astronomers announced on Tuesday (June 10). The exoplanet — named 14 Herculis c, or 14 Her c for short — orbits a sunlike star about 60 light-years from Earth in the constellation Hercules. In the new JWST image, it appears as a faint, fuzzy orange dot, its color a result of heat radiating from its atmosphere translated into visible hues. Astronomers estimate that 14 Her c formed around 4 billion years ago and has a frigid atmospheric temperature of just 26 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 3 degrees Celsius). 14 Her c orbits its star at a distance of about 1.4 billion miles (2.2 billion kilometers), or roughly 15 times farther from its star than Earth is from the sun. If placed in our solar system, it would sit between Saturn and Uranus. But, unlike the flat, well-ordered orbits of planets in our solar system, the 14 Herculis system is dramatically misaligned. Its two known planets, including 14 Her c, orbit at angles of about 40 degrees to each other, creating an "X"-like crossing pattern around their star. This unusual layout may have been caused by the early ejection of a third massive planet from the system, throwing the remaining two into a gravitationally turbulent "planetary tug of war," Balmer said. "These wobbles appear to be stable over long time scales," he said. "We're trying to understand what kinds of planet-planet scatterings could produce such an exotic configuration of orbits." This instability turned out to be a scientific advantage for Balmer's team. Of the nearly 6,000 known exoplanets, only a small fraction have been directly imaged. "Doing this is very technically challenging," said Balmer. Planets shine thousands — and, in some cases, even millions or billions — of times fainter than the stars they orbit, so they "are like fireflies next to lighthouses," he said. Most directly imaged exoplanets are hot, young gas giants that emit enough infrared light to stand out from the intense glare of their host stars. In contrast, colder and older planets like 14 Her c are usually far too dim to detect. The planet's tilted, off-kilter orbit, however, "is great news for direct imaging," Balmer said. "We could confidently predict that JWST could resolve the outermost planet in the system." Using the telescope's specialized starlight-blocking device known as a coronagraph, Balmer and his team succeeded in isolating the planet's faint infrared glow. "We are now able to add to the catalog older exoplanets that are far colder than we've directly seen before Webb," Balmer said in a statement. Based on 14 Her c's estimated age of around 4 billion years, its mass of about seven times that of Jupiter, and computer models of how planets evolve, the researchers expected the planet to appear brighter — or emit more heat — than it actually does in the JWST image. "The planet's actually significantly fainter than what we'd expect," said Balmer. "We don't think that this is a problem with the evolutionary models, however." These gases, possibly along with thin icy clouds, reduce the heat escaping into space, making the planet appear cooler and fainter than expected. With 14 Her c, astronomers have broadened the range of exoplanets they can study. By examining planets with diverse masses, temperatures and orbital histories, scientists hope to gain a deeper understanding of how planetary systems, including our own, form and evolve. "We want to understand how these planets change, because we want to understand how we got here," said Balmer.
