Panthers take steps forward with a solid 2025 NFL Draft

Carolina is looking like a problem. Nearly a week has passed since the draft and the grades are flying in. Many analysts have given the Panthers 'A's' across the board, as they addressed nearly every need in this defensive-heavy draft class. There's something to be said about a team who looks for quality over quantity. Head coach Dave Canales and GM Dan Morgan are making it their mission to change the culture of this Carolina team.
In Canales' first year, the team was a very bumpy road with no end in sight. Quarterback Bryce Young was waiting in the wings after an abysmal rookie year and was hoping Canales could change things for the better. Unfortunately, things were very bleak for Young halfway into the season.

The former top overall pick was eventually benched for Andy Dalton. However, the veteran also made his way to the sidelines due to an injury, forcing Young back into the starting lineup. That two week hiatus did wonders for the one-time Heisman winner, as he came back with a vengeance that led to a more competitive team.
Fast forward to the final game of the season where they are involved in a shootout with the NFL South rival Atlanta Falcons. That game saw Young finish with five total touchdowns, three of which were through the air. While this was the end of a season, it was the start of a new chapter going into another year. Every year a team is looking for a new piece to add to the roster that can change the course of a franchise. The Panthers snagged numerous players that can make an impact on day one.
Tetairoa McMillan will be one to watch this year. A big body target who can jump out of the gym as a first-rounder. The Panthers finally went out and got a guy who can just go up and get 50/50 balls. At 6-foot-5, he has a similar build of rival Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans. Now with McMillan and Xavier Leggette on the outside, Young has key weapons to help him when he has time to get the ball out of his hands.

Carolina then turned to their defense, which was ranked dead last in total defense for the 2024-25 season. They ranked 23rd in pass defense, along with 32nd in run defense, redzone defense and scoring defense. Needless to say defense was a high priority in this year's draft. The next two rounds addressed just that with a couple steals.

Taking edge rushers Nic Scourton out of Texas A&M and Prince Umanmielen from Ole Miss will bring a huge boost. These two will be a key cog in the machine that is dying for new parts. Brian Burns being gone was rough, but these two can help balance out the defensive front. Scourton was noted as the fifth-best edge rusher and the 29th-best player overall, according to Pro Football Focus. Umanmielen was graded as the tenth-best and 50th overall on the big board.

In the fourth round, Carolina had two picks and added something on both sides of the ball. They started with Florida running back Trevor Etienne, who'll look to add value to the backfield. The younger brother of Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne, could be the new RB to cover for Jonathan Brooks as he recovers from an ACL injury.
Carolina then looked to improve their secondary when they drafted Ohio State's Lathan Ransom. The secondary was battered and bruised all last year, especially once they lost their star corner Jaycee Horn to injury. After releasing Xavier Woods in the offseason, bringing in depth at safety was a glaring need. Ransom's ability to cover as well as defend the run allows for some flexibility along the backend of that defense.

By the fifth round it was all about depth. Carolina got some great depth pieces over the final three picks. They added Florida defensive tackle Cam Jackson, Notre Dame tight end Mitchelle Evans, and rounding out the draft class is Colorado receiver Jimmy Horn Jr.
Every player has a good chance to make the 53 man roster, if things pan out and go according to plan. One thing is certain, this Panthers team will be a strong opponent for whoever they face. The tides are shifting and the sun is rising on the new era for the Panthers.

NHL fan goes viral for Oilers-Panthers jersey change during Stanley Cup Final Game 5

The post NHL fan goes viral for Oilers-Panthers jersey change during Stanley Cup Final Game 5 appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Florida Panthers took a massive step towards winning the 2025 Stanley Cup Final, as they picked up a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 5 on Saturday night. And in the process, it looks like they may have gained a new fan. With the win in the bag for the Panthers, a fan at Rogers Place went viral for switching his rooting allegiance in front of the entire world. Advertisement From the start of the game, Florida controlled the proceedings in Game 5, as they quickly raced out to a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period. They didn't look back from there, and while Edmonton hung around late in this one, they ultimately weren't able to replicate their stunning rally from Game 4. As a result, a frustrated Oilers fan was caught on live television taking off his team's jersey, only to have a Panthers jersey on underneath it. At the end of the day, though, the Oilers and their fans won't pay much attention to this move, as they will instead have to turn their focus to a do-or-die Game 6 contest, as they will be looking to force a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Final for the second year in a row. Advertisement With their fanbase turning on them, though, it remains to be seen if Edmonton has enough juice left in them to extend their season (although it's worth noting this game will be played in Florida at Amerant Bank Arena). The Panthers, on the other hand, will be looking to wrap things up in front of their home crowd for the second year in a row. Puck drop is currently scheduled for Tuesday, June 17 at 8 p.m. ET. Panthers' Sam Bennett brings playoff goal total to 15 in Game 5

The post Panthers' Sam Bennett brings playoff goal total to 15 in Game 5 appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Florida Panthers were hoping for a much better result on Saturday than the unfortunate fate they suffered in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers, and Conn Smythe Trophy candidate Sam Bennett was doing his part to make sure it happened. Advertisement The Panthers forward scored his 15th goal of the postseason in the opening 20 minutes of Game 5 on Saturday evening, increasing Florida's lead to 2-0. He picked up a loose puck after Matthew Tkachuk's shot was blocked and whistled a shot through the pads of goaltender Calvin Pickard. In doing so, he actually destroyed the camera in the net with a perfectly placed shot that shattered the glass. He also became just the fourth active player in the NHL today to have reached 15 goals in a single postseason. His Panthers teammate Brad Marchand had given the Panthers a 1-0 lead earlier in the period with his fifth goal of the Stanley Cup Final, joining Mario Lemieux as the only two players in League history to have scored at least five goals in a Cup Final series multiple times. Bennett, Marchand are pending Panthers free agents Perry Nelson-Imagn Images Both Bennett and Marchand are eligible to enter unrestricted free agency when the calendar turns to July, and not only have both players staked a legitimate case to be named the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy, but they've also both helped to boost their price tag. Advertisement Bennett is playing in his third consecutive Stanley Cup Final and is in the final season of the four-year contract he signed in Florida after having previously played for the Calgary Flames. Meanwhile, Marchand was acquired from the Boston Bruins at the NHL Trade Deadline and has become one of the most valuable additions that any NHL club has made in recent memory for a stretch postseason run. He's playing as if he were 10 years younger and with all of the energy and tenacity he displayed as a rookie with the Bruins in the 2011 postseason that resulted in the franchise's first championship since the days of Bobby Orr in the early 1970s. Oilers' Jake Walman makes bold guarantee after Stanley Cup Final Game 5 disaster

The post Oilers' Jake Walman makes bold guarantee after Stanley Cup Final Game 5 disaster appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Edmonton Oilers had recovered home-ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Final with an improbable Game 4 comeback, beating the Florida Panthers in overtime after being down 3-0 after one period. In Game 5, however, Edmonton was unable to keep that momentum going. Advertisement Florida suffocated the Western Conference champs right from luck drop on Saturday night in Edmonton, racing out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and running away with a 5-2 victory to take a 3-2 series lead and move within one win of winning the Stanley Cup for the second consecutive year. Despite the mess that was Game 5 and the fact that the Oilers are heading back to Florida for Game 6 on the road, defenseman Jake Walman is still confident that Edmonton hasn't played its last game in front of its home crowd, via Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic. 'This was always going to be a long series,' Walman said. 'We're going to come back here after a game there, and that's it. There's no doubt.' After seeming to find some answers near the end of Game 4, especially on offense, the Oilers had nothing for the defending champs in Game 5 at home. The Panthers limited their shots and opportunities throughout, and that allowed them to control most of the game. Advertisement Still, the Oilers have proven that they can win on the road in this series even when they look down and out. The series seemed close to over after the first period of Game 4 with the Panthers poised to take a 3-1 series lead before Edmonton came all the way back and silenced the crowd with an incredible Houdini act. If the Oilers want to get their revenge on the Panthers from last year's Cup Final loss and lift the trophy on their side this year, they will have to find some solutions to beat this elite Panthers squad two times in a row. The first test will come on the road in Game 6 on Tuesday night before a possible Game 7 back in Edmonton on Friday.
