EXCLUSIVE Piece of Me! Inside the fight for Britney Spears as viral TikTok lookalikes battle for biopic

Daily Mail17-05-2025

There are very few roles in Hollywood that can take an amateur actress plucked from obscurity and turn her into an overnight sensation. But the opportunity to play Britney Spears in her first ever licensed biopic could surely be one of them.
When it was first reported that the pop star's best-selling memoir, The Woman in Me, was getting the movie treatment, it didn't take long to whip fans into a frenzy over who should portray her.
Ariana Grande, Sydney Sweeney, Sabrina Carpenter, Emma Roberts, and Millie Bobby Brown's names were all thrown into the ring. However, the most dedicated of Spears fans believed the role should go to someone who represents the singer's own rise to fame: an unknown.
Now, it seems those dreams could soon become a reality, as two viral TikTok stars are battling it out for the coveted lead role.
Mia Marcuzzi and Kylie Schultz, both 21 and with college degrees in acting, are equally as desperate to be cast as Spears. So much so, that they've reinvented themselves as the Toxic singer.
On TikTok, Marcuzzi has amassed 72,000 followers, while Schultz has a whopping 189,000. Their desire to portray the Princess of Pop is evident on their respective social media accounts which are filled with videos of them dancing to Spears' top hits and wearing replicas of her most memorable outfits.
And the internet is convinced too, with comments under Schultz and Marcuzzi's videos ranging from 'Telling my kids this is Britney Spears' to 'Close enough, welcome back Britney Spears!' One even declared: 'You're the only person I can see playing Britney.'
Still, it may be some time before any decision is made on who will take on the coveted role.
Last August, Universal Pictures won the rights to Spears' tell-all memoir with Wicked director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt attached to develop the feature.
However, there has since been no updates about the film, with Chu forced to shut down casting rumors earlier this year.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, an inside source close to production doubled down on Chu's assertion, revealing there's currently 'no front-runner' in the race to become Spears – meaning at this point, anyone is fair game.
'It will be ages before they get anywhere with the Britney biopic,' the source said, noting that Chu and the rest of the team behind the film 'don't want to hire an actress' to play Spears until 'everything else [is] locked down.'
'Jon Chu wants to devote all his time and energy to it, and that is something he is unable to do right now with his other commitments,' the insider added.
She told the Daily Mail that she feels it is her 'calling' to play Spears in the biopic
'There is no front-runner so that means everyone that wants to do it, from known to unknowns, still has a chance.'
The news bodes well for Marcuzzi and Schultz who look prepared to do anything.
Schultz – who graduates this spring from Ithaca College with a degree in film, dance, and theatre – was back home in Pennsylvania recovering from a surgery last year when she first heard that a Spears biopic was officially in the works, something she felt was her 'calling.'
Speaking exclusively to DailyMail.com, she said: 'I channeled all my energy into creating performance content on TikTok inspired by Britney's iconic style, which also helped my recovery.'
She secured an interview with CBS News to help gain support for her casting.
'What began as videos showcasing my journey learning her dance moves, songs, and performances evolved into something far greater than a casting campaign – it became a transformation of self-love and confidence,' Schultz said.
Much was the same for Marcuzzi, originally from Argentina, who moved to New York City to pursue a degree in acting at New York University's Tisch School Of The Arts.
She described having a 'gut feeling' about the Spears biopic.
'You know when you get that gut feeling, when you see something on the internet and it scares you so much – that it means you care about it a lot? That's it, it was exactly like that. I just knew,' she said.
It's undeniable that both Schultz and Marcuzzi bear an uncanny resemblance to the pop star, but it will take a lot more than just striking physical similarities to truly tap into the iconic singing sensation.
Not only will the lucky starlet need to look like Spears, but she must also possess both dancing and singing capabilities on par with Spears' level of prowess.
The chosen candidate will also need some considerable acting experience too, because no one wants to watch a film bogged down by its lead star.
While there will be no grueling 'boot camp' like the one Madonna held to cast her on-screen self, the final say on who will portray Spears will likely come down to the Circus singer herself.
And Spears has already shared her thoughts about who she does not want to be hired for the lead.
An insider previously revealed to DailyMail.com that the Hit Me Baby... One More Time singer has refused to cast 'desperate' Millie Bobby Brown, despite the Stranger Things star once describing it as her 'dream role.'
'Millie is so desperate to play Britney that those close to her feel it has become her life mission right now,' the source said in March. 'She believes she was born for this role.
'The problem is, Britney isn't on board. She doesn't see the resemblance.'
The insider said that Brown has 'not spoken directly' with Spears, but added that the singer, who is heavily involved in the project, has 'seen her audition tape.'
Not only will Spears be very hands-on with the casting she is also working on new music for the soundtrack, as preparations for the film inspired the star to create a 'new banger.'
'Britney is making music to be included in the soundtrack for her upcoming biopic and is heavily involved in the process,' another source exclusively revealed to Daily Mail in October.
For Marcuzzi, she will do whatever it takes to land the role – even if that means relocating to her hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana, to fully nail the singer's subtle Southern twang.
'I have done so much research, and I would truly do whatever I can to prepare for this part,' she said. 'I have studied method acting, and I would go to her hometown in Kentwood for a year if I had to in order to perfect her speech and her mannerisms to understand where she came from and how that shaped her.'
'Whatever it takes like dancing, singing, accent coaching,' she added. 'I'm flexible and I'm malleable, and I like that about myself.'
Although Marcuzzi acknowledged that her own resemblance to the singer does give her a leg-up in the competition, what truly sets her apart from the other candidates is her connection to Spears' story.
'I have been working in this industry since I was 10 years old. I feel that's something that connects me. I understand the discipline. I understand the pressure. And I understand that that all comes from a love for performing,' she said.
Marcuzzi admitted that the opportunity to portray Spears is a 'huge responsibility,' and one that will surely come with many challenges.
'I don't know if anyone would be perfect because there's only one Britney,' she said.
As for Schultz, she emphasized how Spears has fundamentally shaped her understanding of what it means to be a female in the entertainment industry.
Being a 'small town girl' herself, Schultz believes that Spears' journey to stardom mirrors her own path, with dreams of connecting to the world through her love of performance.
'As a fresh face, I can disappear into Britney's story rather than merely imitate her,' Schultz said.
'This isn't just another acting opportunity – it's a sacred responsibility to honor my hero. I'm prepared to pour everything I have into ensuring her legacy is portrayed with the respect and nuance it deserves, only if that is what Britney wants.'
It's a long road ahead until the highly anticipated Spears biopic finally hits screens.
Luckily for fans of the singer, they can take solace in the fact that Spears, Chu, and the entire team at Universal Pictures are in no rush to tell such a sensitive and personal story.

Tony Awards laud android rom-com Maybe Happy Ending and history-making Purpose

Maybe Happy Ending, a rom-com about a pair of androids falling in love, took home the Tony Award for best new musical on Sunday. Its star, Darren Criss, had won the leading actor in a musical award just minutes before. He also hosted the Tonys pre-show. Advertisement The best new play trophy at Sunday's Tony Awards went to Purpose, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' drawing-room drama about an accomplished black family exposing hypocrisy and pressures during a snowed-in gathering. It caps a remarkable year for Jacobs-Jenkins, who in addition to winning back-to-back Tonys — his Appropriate won best play revival in 2024 — earned the Pulitzer Prize for Purpose. Jacobs-Jenkins becomes the first black playwright to win for best new play since August Wilson took home the trophy in 1987 for Fences. He urged Tony viewers to support regional theatres. Purpose was nurtured in Chicago. Young thanked her parents, Jacobs-Jenkins, her cast and director Phylicia Rashad. 'Theatre is a sacred space that we have to honour and treasure, and it makes us united,' she said. Sunset Blvd., with Nicole Scherzinger starring as a fallen screen idol desperate to reclaim her fame, won best musical revival, handing composer Andrew Lloyd Webber his first competitive Tony since 1995, when the original show won. Advertisement The current version is a stripped-down, minimalist production. Sarah Snook took home the trophy for leading actress in a play for her tireless work in The Picture of Dorian Gray, where she plays all 26 roles. 'I don't feel alone any night that I do this show,' Snook said, dismissing the idea of her play as a one-woman show. 'There are so many people onstage making it work and behind the stage making it work.' Advertisement Downtown cabaret star Cole Escola took home the best actor in a play trophy for playing a deranged, repressed and over-the-top ahistorical version of Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh Mary!, beating such Hollywood stars as George Clooney and Daniel Dae Kim. Sam Pinkleton won best director for Oh, Mary! and thanked Escola, saying he taught him: 'Do what you love, not what you think people want to see.' Francis Jue won best actor in a featured role in a play for his work in a revival of Yellow Face. He said he was gifted his tuxedo from another Asian actor who wanted him to wear it to the Tonys. Advertisement 'To those who don't feel seen,' he added. 'I see you.' Jak Malone won best actor in a featured role in a musical for the British import Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical, playing a woman every performance. He hoped his win could be a powerful advocacy for trans rights. Eureka Day, Jonathan Spector's social satire about well-meaning liberals debating a school's vaccine policy, won the best play revival trophy. It made its off-Broadway debut in 2019. The original cast of Hamilton, including creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, did a victory lap all dressed in black to mark the show's 10th anniversary on Broadway, with a medley including My Shot, The Schuyler Sisters, History Has Its Eyes on You and The Room Where It Happens. First-time host Cynthia Erivo kicked off the show from her dressing room in Radio City Music Hall, unsure of her opening number as the stage manager urged her to get to the stage. As she made her way through the backstage warren, she ran into various people offering advice until she reached Oprah Winfrey, who advised: 'The only thing you need to do is just be yourself.' Erivo then appeared at the stage in a red, spangly gown with white accents, hip cocked, as she launched into the slow-burning original song Sometimes All You Need Is a Song, written by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Initially alone with just a pianist, Erivo's soaring voice was soon joined by dozens of members of the Broadway Inspirational Voices choir, all dressed in white, making her look like a powerful strawberry in a bowl of whipped cream. In her opening comments, she singled out first-time nominees Louis McCartney, Sadie Sink, Escola and 'an up-and-comer that I think you're going to really be hearing quite a bit about — George Clooney'. She noted that the 2024-2025 season took in 1.9 billion dollars (£1.46 billion), making it the highest-grossing season ever and signalling that Broadway has finally emerged from the Covid-19 blues. 'Broadway is officially back,' Erivo said. 'Provided we don't run out of cast members from Succession,' a nod to appearances this season by former co-stars Snook and Kieran Culkin and last season by Jeremy Strong. She and Sara Bareilles duetted for a moving in memoriam section, singing The Sun Will Come Out from Annie, and honouring its composer Charles Strouse as well as George Wendt, Richard Chamberlain, Athol Fugard, Joan Plowright, Quincy Jones, Linda Lavin, James Earl Jones and Gavin Creel. Erivo was an amiable host, at one point appearing in the second mezzanine to comment that everyone likes the view from theatre balconies — except perhaps Abraham Lincoln. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, centre, accepts the award for best play for Purpose (Photo by Charles Sykes/Invision/AP) She had fun with Winfrey later on, telling her to check under her chair, where she found a gift bag with a toy automobile. 'You get a car!' Erivo cracked. The best book and best score awards went to Maybe Happy Ending, a rom-com between androids, with lyrics written by Hue Park and music composed by Will Aronson. Its director, Michael Arden, won — 'Happy Pride!' he said — and it also picked up best scenic design of a musical. Justin Peck and Patricia Delgado won for choreographing Buena Vista Social Club, and Peck noted a song from the renowned original album was played at their wedding. The musical takes its inspiration from Wim Wenders' 1999 Oscar-nominated documentary on the making of the Cuban album. Best costumes in a play went to Marg Hornwell for The Picture of Dorian Gray, while Death Becomes Her won the musical counterpart, a win for Paul Tazewell in a year where he also became the first black man to win an Oscar for designing costumes, for Wicked. 'I have dressed so many of you out there,' he said from the podium. Harvey Fierstein, the four-time Tony winner behind Torch Song Trilogy and Kinky Boots, was honoured with a lifetime achievement Tony and became emotional during his speech: 'There is nothing quite like bathing in the applause of a curtain call, but when I bow, I bow to the audience, with gratitude, knowing that without them I might as well be lip-syncing showtunes in my bedroom mirror. 'And so I dedicate this award to the people in the dark.'
