AGC to seek contempt proceedings against Shafee for ‘Nazi-Germany' court remark
PETALING JAYA, May 30 — The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has announced plans to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah over his controversial remark likening court proceedings to a 'Nazi-Germany kind of hearing.'
In a statement, the AGC said Shafee's comment, made in reference to an ongoing case, constituted a 'serious and unnecessary attack' on the judiciary.
'While lawyers have the right to challenge judicial decisions through legal channels, public statements that undermine the courts or erode public confidence in the justice system are unacceptable,' it said.
The AGC said it would proceed with contempt of court applications to uphold the rule of law, protect the integrity of the judiciary, and safeguard the courts from baseless accusations and undue public pressure.
Shafee, who represents former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, reportedly made the remark in response to a court order temporarily suspending proceedings linked to Najib's judicial review to enforce a royal decree for house arrest.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini quoted Shafee comparing the court's decision to a 'Nazi-Germany kind of hearing.'
In a follow-up statement today, Shafee clarified that his remark was meant to educate the public during an exchange with a reporter, rather than to disparage the judiciary. He said the comment was intended to explain the concept and essence of a 'judicial decision.'
Najib had earlier been granted leave by the Court of Appeal to initiate judicial review proceedings to serve the remainder of his jail sentence under house arrest. However, these proceedings are on hold pending the Federal Court's decision on an appeal by the Attorney-General.
In February last year, the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced that Najib's prison sentence for the SRC International case had been reduced from 12 years to six, with his fine lowered from RM210 million to RM50 million.
The AGC's move comes amid ongoing scrutiny of public commentary related to judicial matters, reinforcing its stance on preserving confidence in Malaysia's legal system.

New rules coming after 2 tonnes of African catfish released into lake

(Facebook pic) KUALA LUMPUR : New regulations are to be drafted to control the release of fish, especially invasive species, into public waters. The fisheries department announced the move today following complaints about the release of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) into the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang lake in conjunction with a fishing competition organised by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi). The fisheries department said several mitigation measures were agreed upon after a site visit and discussions with relevant officials. 'The fishing competition's secretariat will install additional hapa nets, provide bins to collect African catfish caught during the competition, and disseminate awareness material while carrying out fishing activities throughout the programme. 'Mardi will ensure compliance with the installation of nets, open the lake to controlled fishing activities, and coordinate the inventory and disposal of alien fish after the programme concludes,' the fisheries department said. It said about 1,300 African catfish, weighing about 1.5kg each or a total of two tonnes were released into the lake on May 29, without any notification or request for advisory services from the Selangor fisheries office. The department said the public should seek technical advice from the state fisheries office before carrying out any fish release activities into public waters.

Malaysia invites Myanmar conflict groups for dialogue in KL

(EPA Images pic) SINGAPORE : Malaysia has taken the initiative to invite different groups in the Myanmar conflict for a dialogue in Kuala Lumpur in a bid to find a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today. He said the invitation was extended to the groups last month, Bernama reported. 'I've started (the talks) and I urge my counterparts to send their teams, officials and military intelligence personnel to continue to engage,' he said during a question-and-answer session following his special address at the Shangri-La Dialogue here. When asked about the possibility of elections in Myanmar, Anwar said the immediate priority is to ensure peace, security and the delivery of humanitarian aid. He noted that Asean leaders have continued to push for an extended ceasefire and the protection of all humanitarian aid workers. 'If the elections are fair and more inclusive and do not exclude parties, then, of course, we are ready to accept, although (the process) may not be perfect,' he added. Myanmar's State Administration Council announced in March that they will hold a general election either in December this year or January 2026 at the latest, according to international media reports.
