NCP leader Baba Siddique murder mastermind detained by Canadian authorities
Baba Siddique was fatally shot on the night of October 12, 2024, outside the office of his son, Zeeshan Siddique, in Bandra, Mumbai. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility, alleging that Siddique was targeted due to his close ties with Bollywood actor Salman Khan.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Zeeshan Akhtar, a native of Jalandhar, Punjab was present at the crime scene and played a central role in planning the murder. He fled India shortly afterward.
Lawrence Bishnoi's gang later disowned Akhtar and reportedly issued threats against him. In early 2025, Akhtar released a video acknowledging he was wanted in connection with Siddique's murder and other criminal cases. In that video, he publicly thanked Bhatti, referring to him as a 'big brother'.
Born Mohammad Yasin Akhtar, he hails from Jalandhar and has a history of criminal cases, including a 2022 arrest by Punjab Police on unrelated charges. His name emerged prominently in the investigation launched after Siddique's murder.
Police allege that Akhtar managed the three shooters, Dharmaraj Kashyap, Gurmel Baljeet Singh, and Shivkumar Gautam and arranged weapons, logistics, and accommodation. The charge sheet indicates he instrumental in targeting Siddique.
Akhtar is reportedly a close associate of imprisoned gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. He is said to have formed this connection while in prison, sharing space with shooter Gurmel Singh. The murder plot was reportedly hatched in May 2024, with Akhtar leaving Mumbai a month prior to the attack to avoid suspicion.
After his release from prison, Akhtar traveled to Kaithal, Haryana, to coordinate with Gurmel Singh, Kashyap, and Gautam. He facilitated their journey to Mumbai and helped them establish a base before the assassination.
Indian authorities are now working closely with Canadian counterparts to expedite extradition proceedings. Given the high‑profile nature of the case and its potential national security implications, legal efforts to bring Akhtar back to India are a top priority.

State renews pledge to end child labour
Patna: On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, symbolic cheques for Rs 25,000 were distributed among children rescued from child labour as financial support from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The programme, organised by the department of labour resources, was aimed at raising awareness and reaffirm the state's commitment to ending child exploitation. Deepak Anand, secretary of the department, said around 30 children had been rescued so far in the 2025-26 financial year. In the previous years, 1,319 children were rescued in 2023-24 and 1,148 in 2024-25. He added that the department recovers Rs 20,000 from offending employers and deposits the amount into the Child Labour Rehabilitation-cum-Welfare Fund. The state govt contributes an additional Rs 5,000 per rescued child to strengthen the rehabilitation process. Each child also receives Rs 25,000 from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to secure their future. "World Day Against Child Labour reminds us that there should be no place for child labour in a civilised society. It is a social crime and curbing it is every citizen's moral duty. He said children are a nation's most valuable asset and their well-being reflects the social and economic development of society. He reminded the gathering that, under Indian law, employing children under 14 or adolescents aged 14-18 in hazardous workplaces can result in a fine between Rs 20,000 and Rs 50,000, imprisonment from six months to two years, or both. Repeat offenders face rigorous imprisonment of up to three years. Labour enforcement officers and superintendents were honoured during the programme for their work. 1 Bangladeshi national, 1 Indian tout arrested in Tripura
The Government Railway Police (GRP) Monday informed that one Bangladeshi national and an Indian tout were arrested during two separate raids at the Agartala railway station in Tripura. In the first incident, a Bangladeshi national, identified as Pranajit Ray, 35, was arrested during a joint operation conducted by the Agartala GRP, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and other sister agencies on Wednesday. During the preliminary interrogation, the investigators found that Ray, a resident of Sylhet district in Bangladesh, illegally entered Tripura and had planned to go to Kolkata from the Agartala railway station. 'We seized some documents and some Indian currency. We are examining these things,' said an officer. In a separate incident, an Indian human trafficker, a resident of Chanipur in West Tripura district, was also arrested during a joint operation conducted by security agencies. A GRP officer said the trafficker, identified as Debasish Malakar alias Debu, used to provide food and shelter to Bangladeshi nationals who entered Tripura illegally. 'He was absconding for a long time. We arrested him yesterday (Wednesday) and produced before court today (Friday),' he said. Several Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas have been arrested for entering Tripura illegally in recent months. As per a report of the Tripura Police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya persons and two Nigerians were arrested in the state between January 1, 2024, and February 28 this year. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, recently informed that 2,815 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for illegally crossing the Indo-Bangla border into Tripura from 2022 to October 31, 2024, out of which 1,746 have been pushed back to their country and 1,069 are housed in jail custody, temporary detention centres, shelter homes or are out on bail. Tripura shares 856 km of international border with Bangladesh, much of which is covered with barbed wire fence except a few patches that are still unfenced due to local disputes.

New Delhi, June 12 (UNI) 'Pakistan's track record is very clear,' India said on Thursday as it sought to remind the US about Islamabad's history of supporting terrorism, including granting of shelter to Osama Bin Laden. The assertion by External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal came a day after US Central Command Chief General Michael Kurilla praised Pakistan, saying it was a 'phenomenal counter-terrorism partner' in the fight against terrorism and also commended it for support in operations against ISIS. 'We all know Pahalgam attack is only the recent example of cross-border terrorism. I would remind you that only recently one of the conspirators of 26/11 Tahawwur Rana was extradited from the US to India,' Jaiswal said during the weekly briefing. Rana, Pakistani origin Canadian citizen, is associated with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror outfit and was one of the key plotter of Mumbai terror attack of 2008. 'Obviously none of us have forgotten that Pakistan gave shelter to Osama bin Laden. It is significant that the person and you would be aware that Dr Shakeel Afridi, who helped locate Osama Bin Laden is still imprisoned by Pakistani military,' he added. Laden, chief of Al-Qaida terror network, was found and killed by Special Forces of America in May 2011 in a surgical operation at a residential house in Abbottabad, near Pakistan's capital Islamabad and close to military cantonment.
