Don't Tell, but Mark Greaney Is No Fan of ‘Goldfinger'

New York Times27-02-2025

With 'Midnight Black,' the latest installment just out, he disclosed in an email interview the weird way he names his characters — and his love for Martin Short. SCOTT HELLER
What books are on your night stand?
I am reading 'Flames of Heaven,' by the criminally underappreciated thriller author Ralph Peters, probably for the fourth time. It's one of my favorite novels, and it captures the chaotic end of the Soviet Union so well.
I consume books for research and right now I'm exploring the history of the Irish Republican Army. On my night stand is 'Four Shots in the Night,' by Henry Hemming, nonfiction about an assassination in Ulster in 1986.
What's the last great book you read?
'Heat 2,' by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner. As both a massive fan of the 1995 film and a cynic, I wasn't expecting much from a sequel, but I was blown away. The book is a masterpiece, and I can't wait for the movie!
Disappointing, overrated, just not good: What book did you feel as if you were supposed to like, and didn't?
It's probably heresy to say this — I'll start by saying I love James Bond books and movies. The first Bond film I ever saw was 'Moonraker.' It's ridiculous; astronauts battling with space lasers and metal-jawed villains … but I was 11 years old, so I thought it was the most extraordinary piece of cinema ever created. I wonder sometimes if seeing 'Moonraker' at that age fostered my love for the genre. That said, 'Goldfinger' was not a great book. Ian Fleming put in too much golf and not enough … you know, secret agenting.
Who's your favorite fictional villain?
Anton Gruber from 'Nothing Lasts Forever,' the novel adapted into the movie 'Die Hard.' He isn't nearly as quippy and charming as his cinematic counterpart, but he's still a near-perfect 'baddie.'
What's the last book you read that made you laugh?
'I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend,' by Martin Short. I've been a huge fan since I was a kid. His autobiography is as hilarious and wonderful as he seems to be.
The last book that made you furious?
'Red Notice,' by Bill Browder. This nonfiction account of the Kremlin-sanctioned murder of a Moscow-based lawyer after the theft of hundreds of millions of dollars from Browder's company reads like a top-notch thriller. This book, and the equally infuriating and compelling sequel, 'Freezing Order,' should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand the nature and magnitude of state-endorsed crime and corruption in Russia today.
What's the most terrifying book you've ever read?
'Four Battlegrounds,' by Paul Scharre. It's all about the future of artificial intelligence, including, but not limited to, the weaponization of the technology. Scharre lays out the incredible challenges the world will face in the years to come.
Do you have sources in the C.I.A. that help with your research?
I speak exclusively with ex-agency personnel, but I do have quite a few contacts who are currently employed in other government agencies, as well as the military. When I worked with Tom Clancy years ago it opened a lot of doors for me.
How do you know when you've included enough technical information to make spycraft believable? How do you know when enough is enough?
This is a topic I discuss with other authors all the time. There's a danger of going too deep into the weeds with details, and I never want my books to feel like advertisements for certain brands of equipment, or how-to manuals of vehicle surveillance tactics or other esoteric aspects of tradecraft. A little goes a long way.
What's the most memorable thing that happened to you on a research trip?
I don't suppose I'll ever top flying in a Navy F-18 over the Gulf of Mexico, making seven and a half G turns, passing Mach 1, and flying in formation during strafing runs at a Navy range near Hattiesburg, Miss. The most intense two hours of my life, no question!
How do you name your characters?
My answer is absurd, but true. I go online and pull up the website of the national volleyball league in whatever nation my character is from. I then pick a couple teams at random, then find given names on one team and surnames on the other, making sure the names work well together and don't sound too much like other characters in the same book. I use volleyball because it's random; nobody knows volleyball players' names!
Did the casting of Ryan Gosling in 'The Gray Man' affect how you continue to write the character?
I thought he was a perfect choice, very in line with the Court Gentry in the books, so his casting hasn't really changed how I write the character. Gosling played him capable but vulnerable, smart but fallible, and that's how he's written.
You're organizing a literary dinner party. Which three writers, dead or alive, do you invite?
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sir Winston Churchill and David Sedaris. That would be a weird night.

‘Only Murders in the Building' Emmy odds for Selena Gomez, the Martins, and all those guest stars

To date, Emmy voters have showered Only Murders in the Building with 49 nominations and seven wins, though none of the main actors has prevailed. That could all change for the buzzed-about fourth season, which aired last summer and is now eligible at the 2025 Emmys. According to our updated odds, Martin Short (Oliver Putnam) is out front to win his Best Comedy Actor category, just months after he shockingly scored at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. His costars, Steve Martin (Charles-Haden Savage) and Selena Gomez (Mabel Mora), are both in sixth place for nominations. The three leads play unlikely crime-solvers who podcast about murders that occur in and around their building, the fancy-schmancy Arconia in New York City. More from GoldDerby 'Dune: Prophecy' showrunner teases the Fremen and which books Season 2 could cover Eriq La Salle on developing 'On Call's' 'imperfect' hybrid style and returning to acting Tony Talk: Our final winner predictions in all 26 categories, including competitive Best Actress in a Musical and Best Play Revival Season 4 features a sprawling roster of special guests, including two actors — Meryl Streep (Loretta Durkin) and Paul Rudd (Glen Stubbins) — who received supporting nominations last year. Due to an already-controversial new Emmy rule, performers are ineligible to compete in guest if they were previously nominated for the same show in lead or supporting. Thus, both Streep and Rudd are competing in Best Comedy Supporting Actress/Actor again, where she places eighth and he places 12th. In the Best Comedy Guest Actress/Actor contests, Melissa McCarthy (Doreen) has the strongest chance of reaping a bid, as she's in the sixth position. Da'Vine Joy Randolph (Donna Williams) rounds out the top 10, while Amy Ryan (Jan Bellows) and Griffin Dunne (Milton Dudenoff) are also in the running to hear their names called on nominations morning. Other guest stars who appeared in more than 50 percent of the Season 4 episodes, and thus have to compete in supporting (per the Emmys rulebook), include the following: Molly Shannon (Bev Melon), Jane Lynch (Sazz Pataki), Eva Longoria (herself), Zach Galifianakis (himself), Richard Kind (Vince Fish), Eugene Levy (himself), and Kumail Nanjiani (Rudy Thurber). ‘Canada's Got Talent,' filmed in Niagara Falls, won't be back next year

Is it lights out for 'Canada's Got Talent' in Niagara Falls? Citytv released its 2025/26 programming slate Tuesday and the reality competition series that has filmed at Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort since 2021 is not among the returning shows. 'We've decided to pause production of ('Canada's Got Talent') and the show will go on hiatus for next season,' said a spokesperson for Citytv when contacted Tuesday. The announcement comes just three weeks after the show aired its two-hour season 4 finale at Fallsview's OLG Stage, awarding Newfoundland singer Jacob Lewis $1 million. 'Canada's Got Talent' first aired in 2012 with judges Martin Short, opera singer Measha Brueggergosman and Niagara Falls-born singer Stephan Moccio. After the first season, it did not return until 2022. The new version of the show, filmed at Fallsview Casino's 1,500-seat Avalon Theatre, featured judges Howie Mandel, WWE icon Trish Stratus, YouTuber Lilly Singh and rapper Kardinal Offishall. It became Citytv's highest-rated new series in a decade. Filming shifted to the 5,000-seat OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino the next season, where it would remain. Episodes for each season would be filmed in late October at the venue, to air the following spring. Last year, the show took a dramatic leap by increasing the top prize to $1 million from $150,000, funded by Rogers. The current season saw the departure of judges Stratus and Singh and the addition of country music icon Shania Twain and comedian Katherine Ryan. Citytv would not elaborate on ratings for the final season or why the show is going on hiatus. Mandel, however, already has another Citytv show lined up. He will be the host of 'The Price is Right Tonight,' a new prime-time Canadian version of the iconic U.S. game show. Production starts in December in Toronto with 12 one-hour episodes airing next spring.

15 Surprising Show-Tune Covers for Broadway's Big Night

By Scott Heller Dear listeners, This is Scott Heller, the former theater editor (now I'm on The New York Times Book Review). With the Tony Awards this Sunday, I'm serving up show tunes to Amplifier readers — but not the usual fare. There are no deathless standards here, like Judy Collins singing 'Send in the Clowns' or anything from Barbra Streisand's 'Broadway Album.' And if you're the kind of person who saves your Playbills, you've already listened to the Pet Shop Boys version of 'Losing My Mind' — a lot. Rather, I'm hoping this edition of The Amplifier is full of surprising covers, and covers of show tunes you may not know as theater songs in the first place. I've mostly stayed away from pop albums designed to market the shows themselves, though I couldn't resist opening with one, from well before 'Hamilton' got into that game. And, alas, one of my favorites — Jill Sobule's 'Sunrise, Sunset,' recorded for the 'Fiddler' tribute compilation 'Knitting on the Roof' — doesn't seem to be streamable. But you can find it on her website. Laden with happiness and tears, Scott Who knew? This delightful curiosity comes from a 1968 Motown album on which the trio performed 11 songs from 'Funny Girl,' a tie-in released just as the movie version reached theaters. Take away the ugly duckling story line and the Brooklynese and it doesn't exactly add up. But who cares when greeted with brash horns, sunny vocals and a group cheer after the unforgettable rhyme, 'When a girl's incidentals / are no bigger than two lentils.' Want all of The Times?
