AI personal shoppers hunt down bargain buys

HighlightsGoogle has introduced new shopping features within its 'AI Mode', allowing users to virtually try on clothes using personal photos and search for the best deals autonomously. OpenAI has enhanced ChatGPT with a shopping feature that provides product suggestions and links to merchants, while Amazon's Rufus digital assistant now includes a 'Buy for Me' mode for making purchases outside its platform. Experts suggest that as artificial intelligence agents take over product discovery, retailers must adapt to optimize for these AI shoppers, raising concerns about online privacy and consumer trust in automated buying decisions.
Internet giants are diving deeper into e-commerce with digital aides that know shoppers' likes, let them virtually try clothes on, hunt for deals and even place orders.
The rise of virtual personal shoppers springs from generative artificial intelligence (AI) being put to work in "agents" specializing in specific tasks and given autonomy to complete them independently.
"This is basically the next evolution of shopping experiences," said CFRA Research analyst Angelo Zino.
Google
last week unveiled shopping features built into a new "AI Mode".
It can take a person's own photo and meld it with that of a skirt, shirt or other piece of clothing spotted online, showing how it will look on them.
The AI adjusts the clothing size to fit, accounting for how fabrics drape, according to Google head of advertising and commerce Vidhya Srinivasan.
Shoppers can then set the price they would pay and leave the AI to relentlessly browse the internet for a deal -- alerting the shopper when it finds one, and asking if it should buy using Google's payment platform.
"They're taking on Amazon a little bit," Techsponential analyst Avi Greengart said of Google.
The tool is also a way to make money from AI by increasing online traffic and opportunities to show ads, Greengart added.
The Silicon Valley tech titan did not respond to a query regarding whether it is sharing in revenue from shopping transactions.
Bartering bots?
OpenAI added a shopping feature to ChatGPT earlier this year, enabling the chatbot to respond to requests with product suggestions, consumer reviews and links to merchant websites.
Perplexity AI late last year began letting subscribers pay for online purchases without leaving its app.
Amazon in April added a "Buy for Me" mode to its Rufus digital assistant, allowing users to command it to make purchases at retailer websites off Amazon's platform.
Walmart head of technology Hari Vasudev recently spoke about adding an AI agent to the retail behemoth's online shopping portal, while also working with partners to make sure their digital agents keep Walmart products in mind.
Global payment networks Visa and Mastercard in April each said their technical systems were modernized to allow payment transactions by digital agents.
"As AI agents start to take over the bulk of product discovery and the decision-making process, retailers must consider how to optimize for this new layer of AI shoppers," said Elise Watson of Clarkston Consulting.
Retailers are likely to be left groping in the dark when it comes to what makes a product attractive to AI agents, according to Watson.
Knowing the customer
Analyst Zino does not expect AI shoppers to cause an e-commerce industry upheaval, but he does see the technology benefitting Google and Meta.
Not only do the Internet rivals have massive amounts of data about their users, but they are also among frontrunners in the AI race.
"They probably have more information on the consumer than anyone else out there," Zino said of Google and Meta.
Tech company access to data about users hits the hot-button issue of online privacy and who should control personal information.
Google plans to refine consumer profiles based on what people search for and promises that shoppers will need to authorize access to additional information such as email or app use.
Trusting a chatbot with one's buying decisions may spook some people, and while the technology might be in place the legal and ethical framework for it is not.
"The agent economy is here," said PSE Consulting managing director Chris Jones.
"The next phase of e-commerce will depend on whether we can trust machines to buy on our behalf."

How to deal with AI era? Cisco CPO Jeetu Patel has advice for software engineers, says work on 2 skills

As AI continues to grow rapidly, many engineers are wondering what their future in the tech industry looks like. Cisco's Chief Product Officer (CPO) Jeetu Patel believes the role of engineers is far from over — but says they need to adapt and focus on new skills to stay valuable in this changing a conversation with Business Insider, Patel said Cisco is still actively hiring engineers. The company currently has around 27,000 engineers and is looking for more. 'We feel more constrained now than ever before on not having enough engineers to get prosecuted all the ideas that we've got going internally,' he said, Patel admitted that AI is changing how engineering teams work. Cisco is already testing tools like OpenAI's Codex, an AI coding assistant that can write code, fix bugs, and run tests. With such tools becoming more common, Patel believes engineers will no longer need to focus heavily on writing perfect code. He suggested that knowing every detail of coding syntax won't be a big deal in the next five years. Instead, he highlighted two other skills that he feels are often underestimated but will matter a lot more in the future. First, he talked about the importance of orchestrating agent workflows. In simple terms, this means managing a group of AI tools that work together. Engineers will need to figure out how to assign the right tasks to either humans or AI systems to get the job done efficiently. Patel said this will become a key part of engineering work going second important skill, according to Patel, is the quality of ideas. As AI takes over repetitive tasks, human engineers will need to bring creativity and strong ideas to the table. He said tools like Codex help unlock people's imagination, allowing companies to move faster without being limited by the number of developers they also added that AI will boost productivity in a big way. With the help of AI, engineers could become 10 to 50 times more productive — turning ideas into working products in minutes rather than months. This, Patel believes, will not only help companies move faster but also make work more satisfying for engineers. "The only constraint becomes their imagination," he tech leaders have expressed similar thoughts. For example, Dropbox executive Morgan Brown previously pointed out that in the AI era, what really matters is doing deep, thoughtful work and coming up with strong ideas. While AI may change the tools engineers use, Patel made it clear that the demand for skilled minds isn't going away — it's just changing in a new direction.

Valuations higher than what growth warrants; pick stocks carefully in this market: Shreyash Devalkar

Shreyash Devalkar , Fund Manager, Axis Mutual Fund , recent GDP growth numbers for FY25 and Q4 met expectations. US flows are aiding the market. Despite lower volume growth, valuations are high. The IT sector's growth and PE ratio trends are an example. Globally, IT service valuations have shifted due to higher cash flows. Current valuations exceed what growth justifies. Careful stock picking is essential in this market. Indian markets have had a strong. Will this party continue and if yes, why and if no, why not? Shreyash Devalkar: You have been highlighting one point which is true as far as overall markets are concerned – good macro, in which there is low interest rate, low commodity prices, and fiscal deficit in control. The recent GDP growth numbers released for FY25 and Q4, have not shown much deviations from the expectations though the numbers are not what the market expected a year ago. But as of now, there is no deviation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Una inversión en Amazon podría darte un salario extra. Undo So, broadly, combining all these factors we see definitely the flows from the US are there and that is definitely helping the market. And despite relatively lower growth on the volume front especially, the valuations are definitely high. I always give an example of the IT sector. In the first decade of this century, the IT sector used to grow at 15% with around 20-25 PE. In the second decade, it grew at around 10% with 15-20 PE, and now it is growing at around 5% with around 20 PE. So, the growth is low and the valuations are definitely higher than expected. Some of these valuations are not only in India and if you see IT services globally and take similar companies like Accenture in the US, there also they have seen some changes in valuation, the most appropriate reason is actually over the last three decades, the higher cash flows and higher payouts which this sector has witnessed. But broadly for various reasons, we can try to attribute one thing or other for every sector per se. Valuations are now higher than what the growth would warrant. So, one needs to be very careful in terms of stock picking in this kind of market. Is it okay to say that the macros are looking much better than the micros. Will that be a fair statement? The rupee has stopped falling. Inflation is coming under control as are bond yields. There has been an early onset of monsoon. Are we in for macro dominated rather than micro dominated trade now? Live Events You Might Also Like: Can India become the services factory of the world? Gautam Trivedi explains Shreyash Devalkar: Yes, this has been the case probably for one year to one-and-a-half years. Just one year ago, this trade had started because over last year we saw earnings cut and since September of 2024, the market started reacting to the micro numbers. If you remove even Trump trade related fall, before that also, there was a substantial fall and that was micro related. So, let us not totally ignore the micro and earnings growth. This phase has been a reminder of that and that is where on a one-year basis and so on, the returns as such are not as lucrative as one would like to have. So, definitely macro is good and it provides some downside protection to the market, but micro would be important to make money in individual stocks. We just concluded the Q4 earning season. Help us understand what were your key takeaways from the earning season? Other than that, which sectors do you believe offer an opportunity for long-term investors? Have you spotted any standout sector? Shreyash Devalkar: As far as the season is concerned, it was good versus expectations. What is happening currently is that since the last two-three quarters, the earnings are getting cut ahead of the earning season and expectations are getting revised downward prior to the earning season. So, generally, the earning season is not seeing as much cut as far as the period of approaching the earning season and that is why you have seen that not much reaction to the earning disappointment during the earning season per se. The stocks actually fell, as I said, from September onwards itself. If you take the largecaps represented by Nifty 50, then the growth has been less than 5% overall, while the broader market growth has been around 8%. Good growth in the context of valuation, has been in financial services in the last quarter in terms of NIMs versus expectation. Growth as well as asset quality have been good in some of the oil marketing companies, and the frontline capital goods companies as well. Only a part of the margin is where the focus is on the market especially when it comes to the capital goods and auto kind of cyclical sectors. Otherwise, the earnings are broadly in line with expectations. Since earnings are getting cut for the last three-four quarters ahead of the earning season, I see that FY26 earnings may not see further cuts beyond a point because the market has tried to factor in the recent trends in the earnings in FY26 as well. FY27 is where the entire bulge is when it comes to the earning growth expectation. As far as near-term earning cuts are concerned, we are broadly there. You Might Also Like: Top Nifty50 stocks analysts suggest buying in this volatile week What in this market is cheap but not good and what is good and yet cheap? Shreyash Devalkar: That part has been the case again for the last eight months or one year or so. So, the largecap of India mostly if you take bank, FMCG, IT, largest companies some of them, point is that since they are so large their growth is very much dependent on GDP growth and at 6-7% GDP growth whatever are the numbers for that and if there is expectation of the GDP growth further improving from here, with that expectation definitely the largecaps are reasonably valued compared to their growth expectation. If GDP growth accelerates, then largecaps can give better risk-adjusted returns. When it comes to mid and smallcaps, this conundrum has been there for the last three years now. It is not today's conundrum that largecap lacks growth while valuations are reasonable and midcap, smallcap the growths are better than the largecap but valuations have got elevated quarter after quarter. A 20 PE mid, small great growth story, became 30, 40 after every quarterly result season. Even in this quarter, the same thing would have happened and initially largecaps outperformed. But post the result season, many of the mid and smallcaps because of the good earning growth delivery have caught up. As an investor, if I am running a diversified portfolio, we are looking at a mix of both. So, just for the sake of reasonable valuations, one need not be entirely in the low growth segment. At the same time, one should not totally ignore some of the companies where the valuations are high, but the growth stories are intact. So, reasonable valuation is what we are looking forward to in our diversified funds. You Might Also Like: Stocks to buy today: Paytm, Swiggy among top 5 trading ideas for 2 June 2025

AI regulation must catch up to reality

AI regulation must catch up with reality As AI giants such as OpenAI, Meta, Google, Anthropic and Microsoft unveil deeper integrations of their AI models, a range of users and regulators are raising serious questions about how these companies sourced the huge troves of data that were used to build their diverse chatbot offerings. This question now leads us back to the various privacy cases that have stuck to companies such as Meta and Google, where plaintiffs alleged that their data was collected without their permission or that they were being tracked and targeted without their knowledge or informed consent. While courts across the U.S. are dissecting the legal implications of these data harvesting methods, Big Tech's approach usually results in an out-of-court settlement and the denial of wrongdoings, meaning that there is a lack of transparency. Zooming out, OpenAI faces allegations that it scraped copyrighted content across the entire internet, including the works of authors, artists, and journalists in order to create its large language models (LLMs) and its AI image and video generators. While there is general agreement that AI regulation is needed, patchy data protection laws and little consensus across regions means that Big Tech companies often have free rein to source and use data as they wish. Google to appeal antitrust decision Google has said that it will appeal an antitrust decision over its dominant status in the online search and related advertising market. While a U.S. federal judge noted that Google illegally dominated two markets in the online advertising technology space, Google felt that the U.S. Department of Justice's measures to reduce its dominance went far beyond the court's decision. Google claimed that steps such as sharing more data with rivals would harm its customers, and that the premise of the case focused more on data sharing rather than safeguarding the data of users. Another issue is how Generative AI is changing the way consumers and businesses interact with the web, leading to the question of whether Google holds an illegal monopoly in this space as well. Google said that it believed the court's original decision was wrong, and that it would look forward to its appeal. U.S to closely check visa applicants' social media A cable from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicating that foreign students applying for a visa to study in the U.S. could face enhanced scrutiny of their social media handles has triggered fears about how one's social media activity could lead to the potential loss of education opportunities. In particular, those planning to visit, study, or work at Harvard University are facing expanded checks, according to reports. This update comes in the wake of anti-Israel protests on U.S. university campuses that the government has deemed to be an expression of antisemitism aimed at American Jews rather than a form of political opposition to Israel's military violence against Palestinians. While the U.S. Department of State has collected visa applicants' social media handles and identifiers since 2019, Mr. Rubio's latest cable suggests more serious screening for content that the U.S. government considers to be critical of Israel. Many anti-Israel protesters have also been labelled as Hamas supporters by conservatives.
