French woman who burned grandfather alive as ‘an act of love' granted reduced prison sentence

A French woman who burned her bedridden grandfather alive by setting his mattress on fire was given a five-year prison term on Wednesday, with four years suspended, after prosecutors appealed a previous sentence they deemed too lenient.
A French court on Wednesday handed a five-year jail term to a woman who burned her bedridden grandfather alive by setting his mattress on fire. The prosecutors had appealed a previous sentence saying that they found it 'too lenient'.
In October last year, Emilie G, 33, was given a five-year suspended sentence after she admitted to killing her grandfather, describing it as "an act of love" to end his suffering.
Later, Prosecutors appealed the ruling, saying she killed the 95-year-old as frustrations piled up in her personal life. They demanded a 15-year jail term for the woman.
However, the court in the eastern town of Bourg-en-Bresse stopped short on Wednesday, sentencing her to five years in prison, with four years suspended. The remaining year will be served under house arrest with an electronic tag rather than in prison.
During the trial, Eric Mazaud - the prosecutor - argued that killing her grandfather was 'not an act of love'.
"When you love someone, you don't burn them," he said at the court.
The victim was found dead from severe burns and smoke inhalation in his bed in August 2020.
His granddaughter expressed regret during the appeal hearings which opened on Monday but was unable to explain why she chose to burn him alive.
"He did not have a death worthy of his life... fire is atrocious, it is inhuman," she said on Tuesday.
During the first trial, Emilie G., who experts said suffered from depression, said she was overwhelmed by caring for her grandfather while raising her children and dealing with a faltering romantic relationship.
On the day her partner revealed he had been unfaithful, she poured gasoline on her grandfather's mattress and threw a burning sheet of paper on the bed before fleeing the room.
Prosecutor Romain Ducrocq during the first trial argued that Emilie G. killed her grandfather to "exorcise her frustration and multiple failures".
But the defendant said that she acted to end her grandfather's suffering, someone she had cared for and viewed as a father figure.
She insisted her grandfather had asked her to kill him several times, including in the month before his death, after she found him lying in his own excrement. She said she did not tell other family members.
The court said it acknowledged the man's "weariness", but concluded that at no point "did he express an explicit request for active assistance in dying".
The presiding judge, Raphael Vincent, said he considered the 'extremely serious' acts to be 'in no way a reasoned act of euthanasia'.
According to a psychiatric report, she was in a 'dissociative state' at the time, which was said to 'impair her judgement'.

Who Is Jaskarn aka Jacky Jhaj? ‘British Paedophile' In Spotlight For ‘Marrying' 9-Year-Old

Last Updated: Jacky Jhaj has been charged with fraud, breach of trust, money laundering and identity theft. A British man has been arrested at Disneyland Paris for allegedly planning a fake wedding involving a nine-year-old Ukrainian girl. The man, identified as Jaskarn Jhaj, also known as Jacky Jhaj, was detained last weekend after an actor involved in the event tipped off police. French authorities revealed that the so-called 'mock wedding" was organised under the guise of a film shoot, with over 100 French extras reportedly involved. The event was set to take place within the theme park, which had been rented out for the production. Jhaj, 39, was later charged with fraud, breach of trust, money laundering and identity theft and placed in pretrial detention. Convicted Paedophile This is not the first time Jhaj has drawn serious attention. According to a report in the BBC, he is a convicted paedophile in the UK with a known criminal record related to child sexual offences. In 2016, Jhaj was convicted of sexual activity with two 15-year-old girls. Since then, he has been placed on the UK sex offenders register and has been under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. He has also spent time in prison, but after his release, he continued to stage productions which involved children or young people. In 2023, he staged a fake film premiere in London's Leicester Square. For this, he hired hundreds of children from casting agencies, some of whom were as young as six. He wanted them to 'act like fans, scream his name and try to touch him." Many of the agencies reportedly had no idea about his criminal background. Teenage girls involved in the event told the BBC they were not informed who they were being asked to perform for. In another disturbing incident in June last year, Jhaj was spotted giving gifts to children outside a dance audition. A parent recognised him and raised the alarm. Two months later, he was filmed posing nude in front of a 'mocked-up" BBC News lorry that had been set on fire in public. YouTube Videos BBC also mentioned that Jhaj had uploaded videos of these staged events to a YouTube channel designed to look like an official performer's account. The channel reportedly had over 12 million subscribers and more than six million views. One of the videos, which was uploaded on a different channel, included secretly recorded footage of one of the 15-year-old girls he was convicted of sexually exploiting. Her family told the BBC that the video 'destroyed" her life and remained online for four years before it was taken down. Many such videos remained on his YouTube channel until last September, when Google, which owns the platform, took them down. BBC also gathered records from videographers, production assistants and technicians who worked on some of the events. It mentioned that the cost of hiring and venues 'has run into hundreds of thousands of pounds." Disneyland Paris 'Wedding" Production According to French media, the mock wedding was scheduled to take place at Disneyland Paris on Saturday. A 55-year-old actor, paid €12,000 (over Rs 12 lakh) to play the bride's father, became suspicious and alerted police on the morning of the shoot. Authorities say the nine-year-old Ukrainian girl had arrived in France two days before the event. She was not 'forced to play the role" of the bride. The French prosecutor stated that she had not been subjected to violence. Disneyland Paris had reportedly been booked under a fake Latvian ID. The park allows private rentals outside of normal operating hours and was unaware of the organiser's true identity. Officials now believe the cost of the mock wedding may have exceeded €130,000 (approximately Rs 1.3 crore). Wanted In The UK Following his arrest, the UK's Metropolitan Police confirmed that Jhaj is wanted in Britain 'for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a breach of a Sex Offenders' Register notification requirement." Authorities in the UK are now working with French officials on the case. Location : Delhi, India, India First Published: June 26, 2025, 10:03 IST News viral Who Is Jaskarn aka Jacky Jhaj? Man accused of raping French tourist arrested, claims was honey-trapped

JAIPUR: In a major twist, the man who allegedly raped a French tourist on Monday has claimed that far from being a rapist, he was himself a victim of a Honey trap. The 29‑year‑old man was arrested for allegedly raping the French tourist who came to Udaipur for an advertisement shoot. The accused, identified as Pushparaj alias Siddharth Ojha, a resident of Gangrar in Chittorgarh, is the owner of a casting company and has worked on films, music videos, and television serials for the past eight years. According to the police, he has also done casting for Bollywood stars like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Udaipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Yogesh Goyal said that Pushparaj's company had hired the woman for a mobile advertisement shoot, which took place on June 22 across various locations in the city, including Lake Pichola, Sajjangarh Fort, and nearby restaurants. After the shooting, the team went to a café near Tiger Hill for a party. Later, Pushparaj allegedly lured the woman to his flat in Sukher on the pretext of smoking and raped her.
