New driving licence rule kicks in for millions of Brits TODAY – are you impacted?

A NEW driving licence rule has officially been brought in, changing what a standard permit can legally cover. British motorist who hold a standard Category B licence will now be allowed to drive zero-emission vehicles weighing up to 4,250kg. Advertisement 2 Millions of UK motorists will be eligible to drive a wider range of vehicles without additional testing (stock image) Credit: Alamy Under this update, millions of UK drivers will now be able to legally drive an electric van or small truck with a standard vehicle licence. Previously, motorists would have been required to provide a higher licence category. The rule change is aimed at making it easier to switch to greener vehicles, which often weigh more due to large battery packs or hydrogen fuel systems. A typical medium-sized electric delivery van or passenger minibus can weigh close to 4,250kg, especially when fitted with extra equipment. Advertisement Read More On Motors This is a significant increase from the 3,500kg limit which was previously in place. The licence update is expected to support the growing shift towards greener transport options. Use of zero emission vehicles has grown significantly in recent years as drivers embrace cleaner motoring. Beginning today, motorists with a Category B driving licence can drive an electric or hydrogen-powered vehicle with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 4,250kg. Meanwhile, the MAM limit for petrol and diesel vehicles remains at 3,500kg when driving with a category B licence. The rule applies to standard vehicles that can be used with a Category B licence, including cars, SUVs, vans, and small trucks. Advertisement Vehicles which use specialist equipment to support disabled passengers can have a MAM of up to 5,000kg, however, the extra 750kg must be attributable to the equipment. Category B licence holders can also tow a trailer with a MAM up to 3,500kg wit a petrol, diesel, electric, or hydrogen vehicle. However, the combined MAM of the vehicle and trailer must not exceed 7,000kg. Top 10 most common driving licence codes and what they mean EVER turned your driving licence over and wondered what the random collection of numbers mean? If not, you should because the codes could land you with a fine and penalty points if you don't understand what they're there for. Here are the ten most common codes and what they mean: 01 - eyesight correction, for example glasses or contact lenses 02 - hearing/communication aid 40 - modified steering 101 - not for hire or reward (that is, not to make a profit) 105 - vehicle not more than 5.5metres long 106 - restricted to vehicles with automatic transmissions 107 - not more than 8,250 kilograms 111 - limited to 16 passenger seats 115 - organ donor 122 - valid on successful completion: Basic Moped Training Course 125 - tricycles only (for licences issued before June 29, 2014) For a full list visit the DVLA And if someone with a Category B licence passed their test before January 1, 1997, they can drive a vehicle and trailer combination as heavy as 8,250kg. Advertisement The UK Government reports that zero emission vehicles are constructed to the "same high standards" as equivalent internal combustion engine vehicles. However, they still advised drivers to ensure they are familiar with using the controls, as the zero emissions vehicles can "handle differently". Motorists are advised to practice driving the vehicle in a safe and controlled environment, especially before towing a trailer. 'When driving, you should understand how to safely manoeuvre the vehicle and trailer," the DVSA said. Advertisement "If the trailer starts to snake or swerve, ease off the accelerator and reduce your speed gently. "Do not brake harshly on a bend, as it makes the trailer unstable.' While there won't be any physical changes made to the Category B licence, the entitlement will apply to all motorists who hold it. The Government offers an online service for checking your driving entitlements and what restrictions may apply. Drivers in Northern Ireland should note that licence categories may differ slightly and should check regional guidance. The changes come at a time when the UK is encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles to meet its net zero targets. 2 The update will affect anyone who holds a Category B driving licence in the UK (stock image) Credit: Getty Advertisement

Uber self-driving robotaxis are coming to UK roads NEXT YEAR

UBER is set to trial driverless robotaxis in London next spring, where passengers could be driven by artificial intelligence (AI) in place of a human. The ride-hailing app has partnered with UK AI firm Wayve, which has been testing autonomous vehicles in the capital with human oversight. It is not yet clear whether the vehicles in Uber's trial will be available for customers to use. The company said it is still working out the details. If all goes well, passengers may soon be able to take Uber rides without a safety driver present. Such journeys have become commonplace in the US, namely San Francisco, home to Google's driverless taxi firm Andrew MacDonald, president and chief operating officer of Uber, said the partnership with Wayve would help "to make autonomy a safe and reliable option for riders everywhere." "This is a defining moment for UK autonomy," Wayve CEO and co-founder Alex Kendall said in a statement. Watch moment passenger left TRAPPED in driverless car 'going round in circles' after robot taxi malfunctions The trial has been made possible following a change in UK regulation that aims to get driverless cars on the road sooner. The UK government was originally aiming for the tech to come to British roads in 2026, then the date was changed to the second half of 2027. However, the government's new stance is that it wants them on the roads sooner, and so it's introducing an accelerated framework for small autonomous "bus and taxi like" commercial services. Advertisement The legislation will require self-driving vehicles to achieve a level of safety at least as high as 'competent and careful human drivers', the Department for Transport (DfT) said. Driverless vehicles are hoped to reduce road deaths and injuries, as their systems will be more fault-proof than humans. The development of automated vehicle technology could create 38,000 jobs in the UK and add £42billion to the economy by 2035, according to the DfT. It's unclear how many customers will opt for a driverless vehicle over a car with a human behind the wheel. Inbetweeners fans given chance to relive classic episode in replica yellow Fiat – complete with iconic red door

A REPLICA yellow Fiat, similar to the one seen in The Inbetweeners and complete with a ridiculous single red door, is now available to rent in London, Birmingham, and Manchester. Car-sharing marketplace Turo is offering fans the chance to take on their very own comedy road trip in a fantastic copy of Simon Cooper's first car, available for £55 per day. 4 The little motor was a big hit with fans of the show, which ran for three seasons from 2008 to 2010 Credit: Handout 4 A replica of Simon's unforgettable car from The Inbetweeners is available to rent The distinctive yellow supermini, which is a Fiat Seicento - rather than the show's Fiat Cinquecento - features the red replacement door made famous by the series. Available on Turo from June 2, the only stipulation is that drivers must be aged 25 or over to book the vehicle. Rory Brimmer, Managing Director at Turo UK, said: 'From its comparison to urine to its eventual watery grave, Simon's car became as much a character in The Inbetweeners as the four lads themselves. Read more Motors News 'Now, we're giving fans the chance to get behind the wheel of this piece of British comedy history - and avoid long waits at the bus stop.' The added theme park perk is handed to fans in the form of a voucher for Thorpe Park tickets alongside their booking, or Alton Towers for those based near Manchester. Turo insists that, unlike in the show - where Simon's car faced numerous issues, including having its door ripped off, being vandalised and ultimately rolling into a lake at the end of the show's run - this replica is in great condition and fully functional. The Fiat is a mainstay on the show, which ran from 2008 to 2010 across three seasons of just 18 episodes. Most read in Motors Given to the character Simon (played by Joe Thomas) by his parents after passing his driving test, he takes an instant dislike to the car, particularly because of its colour and the fact that it has a tape deck. On the same day he gets the car, Simon takes his friends Jay and Will on a road trip to Thorpe Park, but upon arrival, Jay becomes impatient when Simon is reverse parking and opens the door too quickly, breaking it off against a lamppost. Turo allows drivers to rent just about any car, just about anywhere - from tech-savvy EVs to rugged 4x4s and reliable city runarounds. Options also include picking up the motor or having it delivered to your preferred location, with third-party liability insurance thrown in as standard as well as a range of vehicle protection plans. 4 Unlike Simon's car in the show, which faced constant mishaps, this replica is in pristine condition and ready for an adventure Credit: Channel 4 4 Drivers will also receive free tickets to Thorpe Park or Alton Towers, courtesy of Turo Credit: Supplied
