Spartanburg Co. student named finalist in Cheerwine Festival contest
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A Dorman High School freshman is among 10 finalists whose artwork could appear on banners, branded materials and t-shirts at this year's Cheerwine Festival in North Carolina.
Every year Cheerwine, a cherry soda which originated in Salisbury more than a century ago, celebrates its history and ties to North Carolina with a cherry soda themed festival.
This year the company invited high school students from across North and South Carolina to submit original designs highlighting Cheerwine and it's local ties to the Carolinas.
Eden Vander Ploeg, a student at Dorman Freshman Campus, was among the more than 150 students to enter the contest, one of 10 finalists to be featured at this year's festival.
Ploeg's design features a glass Cheerwine bottle being poured out, its contents forming two stems ending in a pair of cherries branded with the date of the Cheerwine Festival, May 17.
The design was nominated as a finalist by a panel of judges which included Salisbury's mayor and Joy Ritchie Harper, a fifth-generation member of Cheerwine's founding family.
'We continue to be amazed by the passion and creativity students bring to this contest,' said Harper in a news release. 'This year's finalists brought the region's spirit to life through vibrant and imaginative designs. We're grateful to the teachers, administrators and young artists who make this possible, and we can't wait to see which design will represent this year's Festival!'
Cheerwine is letting the public decide which of the 10 designs will be featured on t-shirts and other branding for this year's festival.
The winner and runners-up will be honored at the 2025 Cheerwine Festival in May, and the winning design will become the official festival artwork.

Make-a-Wish, Asheville Police Department bring child's dream to life
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) — The Make-a-Wish Foundation joined forces with Asheville's Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) to make a child's dream come true. Toby got the chance to partake in a 'villain battle' with four of the real Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who were flown in by Nickelodeon. Officers supplied Toby with gear necessary for his big battle, including a vest, hat, and Nerf gun. He even got the change to ride along with officers, operate a drone, and arrest the 'bad guys.' Celebrate Juneteenth 2025: Community Events In Dallas
Dallas residents will have two opportunities to celebrate Juneteenth early next summer, with community events scheduled for Saturday, June 14. The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and Fair Park are hosting separate festivities combining health initiatives, entertainment, and volunteer service. The celebrations offer residents different ways to honor the historic holiday commemorating the end of slavery in Texas. The MLK Community Center's 2025 Juneteenth 4K Walk & Festival runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m., followed by an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. and the walk beginning at 9:30 a.m. After the 4K Freedom Walk promoting health and wellness, attendees can enjoy a free community festival. Live entertainment, vendors, and family activities round out the morning celebration. Participants must sign up online to join the walk or participate as vendors or volunteers. Churches, nonprofits, and community organizations are encouraged to participate in the service projects. The festival welcomes anyone passionate about volunteering and supporting local communities. Other festival activities include live music, an affordable housing summit, the Southern Taste of Dallas Competition, an art installation, a retail marketplace, and a food truck park. The event concludes at 9 p.m. On June 19, the South Dallas Cultural Center is hosting the Juneteenth Artists Showcase from noon until 5 p.m. at 3400 Fitzhugh Ave. This free event promises 'a night full of fun and good vibes.' All ages are welcome. These events offer distinct approaches to Juneteenth commemoration.
