India Todaya day ago

The United States is on fire as the widespread protests in Los Angeles reached their fifth day. Mass arrests have been made. And 700 United States Marine Corps personnel, along with up to 4,000 National Guard personnel, have been deployed to control the situation. While Mexican flags were unfurled in the protest, the Department of State said, 'No nation is obligated to harbour foreign criminals from justice in their home nations, much less allow them to continue their crime spree right here in the United States.'advertisementLATINOS IN THE USThe United States hosts a significant population of refugees from around the world. According to the Pew Research Centre, in 2022, there were over one crore illegal immigrants in the US, a country with an overall population of 34 crore. Of them, 77 per cent or 79 lakh were Latin Americans — 41 lakh from Mexico, 21 lakh from Central America, 7.3 lakh from the Caribbean, and 10 lakh from South America.
While the US government's crackdown suddenly intensified last week, it did not come as a surprise to the community. A Pew survey of US adults conducted between February 24 and March 2 noted: 'Amid heightened immigration enforcement during the early weeks of President Donald Trump's second term, 42 per cent of Hispanic adults say they worry that they or someone close to them, could be deported.' This was similar to the share of Latinos who expressed concern about deportations during President Joe Biden's tenure, as well as in the later stages of Trump's first term.NUMBER OF REFUGEESadvertisementRefugees in the US have also increased sharply since 2022. While the total number of refugees decreased from nearly 85,000 in 2016 to a mere 11,411 in 2021, it sharply rose to cross one lakh in 2024. Refugees from Africa and South Asia accounted for the largest portion.Meanwhile, the US on June 4 completely banned the nationals of 12 countries and put a partial ban on citizens of seven other countries from entering the US.The step was taken to allegedly ban foreign terrorists and strengthen the national security of the country.Tune InMust Watch
