The Brief
Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing on Tuesday evening.
Some slick spots could appear with freezing drizzle expected.
TxDOT crews will work around the clock to monitor dangerous areas on the roads.
Temperatures across North Texas will fall below freezing on Tuesday and many of us will remain below the freezing point until Friday.
TxDOT crews are in 24/7 operations to monitor overpasses, bridges and other road spots that could become icy due to the cold.
What they're saying
Some drivers in Denton County were caught off guard passing through North Texas as it welcomed a piercing arctic blast.
Paul Alexander is headed home to the Wichita Falls area.
"Roads aren't bad. Wet in places," he said. "I ran into rain on I-20 coming here. Other than that, it's good."
Alexander says he noticed the wind and some light flurries here and there.
Just a few miles away, we saw what looked like fog forming off Lewisville Lake.
It happens when cold air moves over a warmer lake, picking up moisture and blowing onto the shore.
We could even see a little bit of lake effect snow Tuesday night and on the south sides of other lakes across North Texas.
What we know
Crews have pre-treated roads with brine since Friday and are now beginning their around the clock shifts.
TxDOT says crews will be staged in different areas to respond to any problem areas.
Officials are urging people to stay off of the roads if possible.
If you have to be on the roads, make sure you have a full tank of gas and drive slowly.
Fort Worth firefighters are stocking up with extra blankets and flares, which they can use to block off roadways or defrost frozen fire hydrants.
Emergency centers are also in overflow mode, and some have even extended their hours.
What we don't know
We don't know how much the weather will impact your travel.
The freezing drizzle is only expected to impact drivers for a short period of time.
There may be icy spots by Wednesday morning, but they aren't expected to be widespread.
What they're saying
"It's going to be cold out there. We don't know what is on the road yet. And so we're really asking people to drive safely, slow down. I know that is hard for Texas drivers, but we need you to get off the gas pedal a little bit, drive for the conditions and know before you go. So this is where you can really check DriveTexas.org. We'll have our reports up there so you can see if there's any icy different conditions. But it does change pretty quickly," said Madison Schein with TxDOT Dallas.

Belton addresses outdoor warning system malfunction

BELTON, Mo. — A Cass County suburb said its outdoor warning sirens are working once again. Those same sirens did not immediately activate Tuesday as tornado warnings were issued. On Thursday, people in Belton may have heard outdoor warning sirens going off, but it was just a test. We're told the issues that happened on Tuesday are now resolved. View the latest Weather Alerts in the Kansas City region on FOX4 The City of Belton shared video with FOX4. On Thursday, the city tested the outdoor warning sirens as part of ongoing troubleshooting efforts making sure the system works properly. This, after their sirens didn't immediately sound Tuesday, according to Director of Emergency Management Claire Canaan. 'It's not a good thing to find, but it's also a good thing to find because we can address it and help save lives,' Canaan said. On Tuesday, when a tornado warning was issued for parts of Cass County, including Belton, Canaan said they recognized a disruption in the signal that sets off the sirens throughout the city. Her team tried a backup method, which also didn't go through. Finally, a secondary method of activation worked. The issue, 'Some equipment that we needed to update, the radio needed some maintenance done to it,' Canaan said. Crews spent the next two days ensuring the equipment was connected and work the way it's supposed to. Canaan said on Thursday city staff stood at all 18 siren locations across Belton to monitor and confirm performance. 'They all worked the way they're supposed to,' she said. It's important because it is a method of notification for people. It is a part of our multiple alerting warning for severe weather and when that doesn't work, we do try to rely on that but we always try to emphasize to have multiple methods of notification for reasons like this.' Download the FOX4 News app on iPhone and Android 'We were also able to get staff at each one of our siren locations and be able to visually tell us that, 'Yes, that siren is operating the way it was supposed to.' If it had a message that it put out that, that was working correctly, that it was sounding, it was turning, that it was in operation,' Canaan said, 'that everything was working correctly.' They tested the outdoor warning system in May. She said at that time, it was good to go. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
