
Investigators recover DC plane crash ‘black boxes.' What are the devices that help investigators unlock the cause of a disaster?
Investigators are working to retrieve the remnants of the two aircraft involved in a crash in Washington DC that killed 67 people and raised questions about air safety.
The black boxes have been recovered from the American Airlines Bombardier CRJ-700 regional jet, which collided with a U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River on Wednesday, killing 67 people.
Lead investigator Brice Banning said the helicopter also contained 'some form of recording devices' that would be read either by the National Transportation Safety Board or by the Defense Department under existing agreements.
What are black boxes?
The name is a misnomer; they are not actually black but high-visibility orange. Experts disagree how the nickname originated but it has become synonymous with the quest for answers when planes crash.
Many historians attribute their invention to Australian scientist David Warren in the 1950s. Earliest devices recorded limited data on wire or foil. Later devices switched to magnetic tape. Modern ones use computer chips inside hard casings.
There are two recorders: a Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) for pilot voices or cockpit sounds, and a separate Flight Data Recorder (FDR). Some devices combine both functions.
They are mandatory on civil flights and the aim is to preserve clues from cockpit sounds and data to help prevent future accidents, but not to determine wrongdoing or liability.
In broad terms, investigators say the FDR helps them analyse what happened and the CVR can - though not always - start to explain why. But experts caution that no two probes are the same and virtually all accidents involve multiple factors.
The disappearance in 2014 of Malaysian Airlines MH370 triggered debate about whether data should be streamed instead.
How big are black boxes on planes?
They weigh about 10 pounds (4.5 kilos) and contain four main parts:
A chassis or interface designed to fix the device and facilitate recording and playback
An underwater locator beacon
The core housing or 'Crash Survivable Memory Unit' made of stainless steel or titanium able to withstand a force equivalent to 3,400 times the feeling of gravity.
The recording chip on a circuit board.
After contact with water, they must first be thoroughly dried and the connections cleaned to ensure data is not erased accidentally. Audio and data files are downloaded and copied.

The data itself means little at first. It must be decoded from raw files before being turned into graphs and synchronised with other data, like air traffic control transmissions.
Lab experts sometimes use 'spectral analysis,' a way of deciphering fleeting sounds or barely audible alarms.
FDRs must record at least 88 essential parameters but modern systems can typically track 1,000 or more additional signals.
The CVR usually contains two hours of recordings on a loop and this is being extended to 25 hours.
Implementing such regulatory changes can take years, a delay highlighted by the crash last month of a Jeju Air Boeing 737.
The recorders in that accident, in which 179 people died, did not capture the last four minutes of flight, officials say.
A spate of accidents in the 1990s in which recorders had stopped working when power was lost led the NTSB to recommend enough backup power to provide 10 minutes of extra recording.
The change was finally adopted for new planes delivered from 2010, but only came into effect eight months after the 737-800 involved in the Jeju crash left the Boeing factory, according to aircraft data on Flightradar24.

NTSB finds a fuel leak and improperly installed parts in the engine of an airliner that caught fire
A fuel leak and several improperly installed parts were found inside the engine of an American Airlines plane that caught fire after the plane landed in Denver in March, according to a new report released Thursday. The National Transportation Safety Board said one part inside the right engine of the Boeing 737-800 was loose and had been installed in an incorrect direction and that fuel was leaking from the fitting of another part that was incorrectly fastened. The preliminary findings don't identify the cause of the fire because the NTSB won't reach that conclusion until after it completes its investigation sometime next year. But former NTSB and FAA investigator Jeff Guzzetti said the problems investigators found in the engine appear to be the source of the fuel that caught fire. 'To me, it looks like improper maintenance in the right engine leading to a fuel leak,' Guzzetti said after reading the NTSB report. Photos and videos posted online showed billowing smoke and passengers standing on the plane's wing after it taxied to a gate at Denver International Airport. Twelve people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The plane carried 172 passengers and six crew. The NTSB said gate workers extinguished the fire within a minute even before firefighters arrived and doused lingering hot spots on the plane. Pictures included in the NTSB report show streaks on the outside of the engine from the leaking fuel, and airport video showed a trail of fluid leaking from under the right engine as the airplane taxied into the gate. Guzzetti said he believes those streaks were probably made while the plane was flying. After it landed, he said, the fuel likely pooled inside the engine and caught fire. The American Airlines flight had left Colorado Springs Airport and was bound for Dallas Fort Worth when it diverted to Denver on March 13 after the crew reported high engine vibrations. The plane's right engine caught fire after it arrived at the gate. Passengers started yelling 'fire' and 'smoke' shortly after the plane pulled up to the gate, and flight attendants saw smoke start to fill the cabin, according to the NTSB report. The flight attendants tried calling the flight crew and knocking on the cockpit door, but didn't get an answer. So the report said the flight attendants initiated the evacuation. Passengers were able to use the jetway at the front left door and the escape slide at the right rear door as well as the left over-wing doors to evacuate. But the left rear door wouldn't open, and maintenance personnel discovered afterward that the escape slide jammed in the door. The faulty slide was sent to the manufacturer for further investigation. The country has seen a recent spate of aviation disasters and close calls stoking fears about air travel, though flying remains a very safe mode of transportation.

Housemates of missing Australian teenager Pheobe Bishop charged with murder
The housemates of missing Australian teenager Pheobe Bishop have been charged with murder three weeks after she disappeared. James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, were on Thursday charged with one count each of murder and two counts each of interfering with a corpse, Queensland Police said. Ms Bishop, 17, was last seen on her way to Bundaberg airport in Queensland on 15 May. Police believe she was supposed to board a flight at 8.30am to Brisbane and then onto Perth to meet with her boyfriend, but CCTV footage showed she did not enter the terminal at the airport. In a statement, Queensland Police said that her body had not yet been located. Both Mr Wood and Ms Bromley will appear at Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Friday.

For all the majestic and, at times, inglorious moments that defined Scottish sport throughout the 20th century, the crowning achievement of distance runner Lachie Stewart is too often forgotten. He was, and remains, one of Scotland's greatest ever athletes, and the sad occasion of his death last week at the age of 81 is a chance to revisit the moment he became a national hero after claiming gold in the 10,000 metres at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. No one, except perhaps Lachie himself, considered such a feat realistic. He was a gifted runner, for sure, but found himself up against a talented field which included Dick Taylor, the British record holder, and Kenya's Naftali Temu, the reigning Commonwealth champion.
