This weekend, for three days (from May 3 to May 4), Kochi will get to experience artworks by some of India's compelling voices across time and tradition at Raja Varma Hall, Taj Malabar. The works of artists such as VS Gaitonde, B Prabha, Manu Parekh, Bharati Prajapati, RB Bhaskaran, and Perumal, will be on show alongside contemporaries like Pushpa Dravid, Vipin T Paloth, Ganapati Hegde, and Sangeeta Abhay.
The works will be in the city as part of the Bengaluru-based Gallery G's On the Go: A Travelling Showcase of India's Masters and Modernists. The show premiers in Kochi. As the name suggests, it is a travelling showcase, which will give people a glimpse of works which they otherwise may not have an opportunity to see.
Geetanjali Maini, founder and managing director Gallery G says, 'We've been incredibly fortunate to have collectors, friends, and supporters from across India. It's time to go where the love has come from. On the Go is about breaking geographical boundaries — city by city, we're bringing our carefully curated shows to audiences who've always been part of our journey.'
Kochi was a natural choice for the first edition of On the Go as the city blends heritage with modernity, boasting an audience that engages with art and it being home to India's art biennale.
'Kochi is not just an art-loving city — it's a city that has helped shape contemporary Indian art narratives. Launching here isn't a coincidence, it's a tribute,' says Nayare Ali, Project Director, On the Go.
Apart from the works on show, two sessions on art will be held where artist Riyas Komu will speak on 'Making as Thinking' and historian and author Manu S Pillai will speak on Art as History. These two are by-invitation events.
Gallery G' On the Go: A Travelling Showcase of India's Masters and Modernists is on at Raja Varma Hall, Taj Malabar till May 4, 11am-6pm

Javed Akhtar Recalls Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Brave Pro-India Remark To Pakistan: 'He Was Courageous'

Last Updated: Javed Akhtar recalls Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's bold statement to Pakistani officials, praising India's warmth and criticizing Pakistan for ignoring Lata Mangeshkar. Veteran writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar has once again revisited the long-standing conversation around the cultural exchange between India and Pakistan, while fondly remembering his deep admiration for legendary Pakistani qawwali maestro, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Though Akhtar had earlier drawn applause in India — and criticism across the border — for calling out Pakistan's history of sheltering perpetrators of attacks like 26/11 during an appearance in Lahore, he maintains that his respect for Nusrat remains untarnished. Speaking on AajTak Radio, Akhtar shared a poignant anecdote from a music launch in Delhi that highlighted Nusrat's candour and courage. 'I'm not a huge fan of qawwali as a genre," Akhtar admitted, 'but I was a great admirer of Nusrat. He was a lovely man. We worked together on an album titled Sangam — I wrote it, he composed it." Recalling the event held at a five-star hotel in Delhi, Akhtar described how Nusrat addressed a packed audience, including dignitaries from the Pakistan High Commission seated in the front row. 'Nusrat was asked to say a few words. He said, 'I travel all over the world, but the reception I get in India is unmatched. I hang my head in shame when people ask me why my country hasn't hosted Lata Mangeshkar. I'm saying this here because I want the people from the Pakistan High Commission to pay attention,'" Javed recalled. Akhtar described the moment as a rare act of bravery. 'It takes conviction, daring, and honesty to make such a statement. For me, as an Indian, it's not a big deal to say this. But for a Pakistani to say this on Indian soil and then return home — that's incredibly courageous," he said, adding, 'I have nothing but love and admiration for Nusrat. He died so young. He was on his way to America to sign a record deal with none other than Madonna. Who knows what more greatness he would have achieved had he lived longer." Born in 1948, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan passed away in 1997 at the age of just 48. Javed noted that Nusrat was one of the few South Asian artists whose appeal transcended borders, regularly selling out concerts not just among the diaspora, but among Western audiences as well. After the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year, Akhtar reiterated his stance on the imbalance in cross-border artistic engagement. 'It has been one-way traffic. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, Noor Jahan — all came to India and were welcomed with open arms. Faiz Ahmad Faiz, when he visited India during the Vajpayee era, was treated with the respect reserved for a head of state," he said in an interview with PTI. First Published:

Rachel Zegler's Snow White Premieres On OTT, Where To Watch

Last Updated: The film is Inspired by the 1937 animated show Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot-starrer Snow White are set to premiere on a digital streaming platform after its decent performance at the theatres. Before its theatrical release, Snow White created significant buzz among the audience for being one of the most expensive live-action films in the industry. Snow White is set to release on Disney+ on June 11 and Indian audiences can stream the movie on JioHotstar. Inspired by the 1937 animated show Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the plot of the movie centres around the title character Snow White (played by Rachel Zegler) as she seeks refuge with seven dwarfs after fleeing from the Evil Queen (played by Gal Gadot), who later becomes able to reclaim her kingdom. Directed by Marc Webb, the film also stars Andrew Burnap, Jeremy Swift, Martin Klebba, and others alongside the lead actresses. A wider home release that includes 4K Ultra HD, DVD, and Blu-ray editions is scheduled to drop on June 24. This home entertainment edition is likely to feature special, never-before-seen content like bloopers, deleted scenes, sing-along versions, and some behind-the-scenes glimpses. Moreover, Disney will also release a 2-movie collection combining the movie with the original Snow White. The film was decent at the box office, earning 205 million USD worldwide, but could not meet the hopes of makers, as the budget was 240-270 million USD. One of the main reasons for the film delivering an average performance was the fact that, as per Disney's decision, the film did not feature original dwarfs, but they were made with CGI. Additionally, the costume design did not satisfy the audience either. Moreover, the film also faced harsh criticism following Rachel Zegler's comment on playing the princess. The lead actress' opinion on the original film was perceived as disrespectful, as Zegler stated in an interview with Variety that the version focused on leadership and self-discovery, whereas the original version stuck to the age-old narrative of a damsel in distress. Her opinion sparked controversy as the fans viewed her comments as disrespectful towards the original movie and the legacy of Disney. Zegler also faced backlash due to her ethnicity, as being a brown girl, she was cast in Snow White. Many objected that she was not the right choice to portray the character. First Published:
