Lakers newsletter: What the Lakers accomplished at the trade deadline

Hey everyone, I'm Dan Woike and welcome to The Times' Lakers Newsletter, a place where I can take a deep breath and look back on everything that's happened this trade season, where the Lakers and Rob Pelinka significantly rebuilt this team with three deals.
Dec. 29, 2024
Lakers send D'Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis and second-round picks in 2027, 2030 and 20301 to Brooklyn for Shake Milton and Dorian Finney-Smith
—An important transaction to kick things off for the Lakers because of the way it helped transform the team's identity. In Finney-Smith, the Lakers got the kind of low-maintenance role player committed to his defense that every team wants. Plus, after a slow start, he has shown that he's more than capable as a shooter, giving the Lakers the kind of spacing and versatility that JJ Redick wants for his vision.
Feb. 1, 2025
Lakers send Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick to Dallas for Markieff Morris, Maxi Kleber and Luka Doncic
—OK, a true shocker. All indications to this point were the Lakers were maybe looking at smaller deals, with a lot of those indications coming from inside the front office. The market for centers was pretty rough, without true difference-makers available at the cost being asked for. And then, boom. The Lakers post-LeBron James future came into focus with this deal. Doncic hasn't debuted — he's slated to play his first game since Christmas either on Saturday or Monday.
Feb. 5, 2025
Lakers send Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, 2030 first-round pick swap and 2031 first-round pick to Charlotte for Mark Williams
—Another shocker, this time because Pelinka himself said there likely wasn't a big trade to be made to solve the Lakers' problems in the frontcourt after the team dealt Davis to Dallas. But late Wednesday night, the Lakers and the Hornets struck a deal with the Lakers trading their best remaining assets (outside of Austin Reaves) to Charlotte for Williams, a promising 23-year-old center who can put pressure on the basket alongside Doncic. He's got real work to do as a defensive rim protector, but the deal signals the Lakers willingness to be aggressive with two things at once: giving James a real crack at winning now while still having things aligned for the future.
Soft Cell – Say Hello, Wave Goodbye
My new trade deadline anthem – you say hello, you wave goodbye. While people can and should be excited about the new Lakers players, I'm personally sad to say goodbye to each of these players who I had personal and professional relationships with (including more than one disagreement). I'm excited about getting to work with these new players, but sad to see some real professionals go.

Top 3 Centers The Warriors Can Add This Summer To Make One Last Championship Run With Stephen Curry

The Golden State Warriors have a lot to be proud of after the conclusion of another hard-fought season. While they didn't win the title this year, the Warriors showed astounding improvement with Jimmy Butler and managed to rise from 11th in the West up to 7th. Behind the play of Butler, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green, the Warriors made it all the way to the Western Conference Semifinals before ultimately losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 5 games. Now that this campaign is over, the Warriors can begin making plans for the next campaign, which will see Curry, Draymond, and Butler return for their first full season as teammates. Advertisement Even with that trio, however, the Warriors will need an upgrade at center if they want to maximize their title chances, and this upcoming summer is their next best chance to fill out the frontcourt before starting a new season. With limited assets available, Golden State will have to be selective in who they target, but there are several names right now who could prove a valuable addition both on the trade market and in free agency. The question is, how much are the Warriors willing to give up in their pursuit of a big man? Mark Williams Is Ready For Redemption It's been a quiet tenure with the Hornets for young big man Mark Williams, but nobody has forgotten him being rejected by the Lakers. Back in February, Williams was on the verge of joining LeBron James and Luka Doncic in Los Angeles before GM Rob Pelinka got cold feet and failed his physical at the last minute. Williams was sent back to the Hornets that day, and it's where he's been ever since. Advertisement With one year and $6.3 million left on his contract, Williams wouldn't be a major commitment for the Warriors, but he'll be eager to prove himself after being shunned by LA. At the very least, at 7'0" and 240 pounds, he'd bring much-needed size to the Warriors' frontcourt, which would help them in just about every aspect on the floor. While maturity and work ethic seem to be an issue for Williams, his production on the court has been solid for the Hornets, and he could thrive with those skills alongside Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler. With averages of 15.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game, Mark provides a steady presence under the rim, and that's exactly what the Warriors need for this final leg of Steph's journey. Daniel Gafford Could Unlock The Warriors' Defense In Dallas, the Luka Doncic trade sent shockwaves across the city, but things are looking up for the Mavericks after landing the top pick in the upcoming draft. With Cooper Flagg on the way, it puts everything in doubt, and that includes the availability of Daniel Gafford. Advertisement The veteran big man is reportedly a top target for the Lakers this summer (who are also looking for a center), but the Warriors could also benefit from his addition. In 57 games this season, the 6'10" center averaged 12.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game on 70.2% shooting. Before Anthony Davis' arrival, he was the last line of defense for the Mavericks, and he's still got room to grow at just 26 years old. As a high-energy, athletic big man, Gafford excels in pick-and-rolls, and he's a beast in the paint and a rebounder and shot-blocker. In many ways, he's everything the Warriors need, and his contract is relatively affordable with one year, $14.4 million remaining. Brook Lopez Could Be Available As the Milwaukee Bucks ponder their future with Giannis Antetokounmpo, the status of their other core players remains shrouded in mystery. As an unrestricted free agent this summer, Brook Lopez has complete control over his next basketball destination, and the Warriors are an ideal fit, assuming they are willing to pay him. Advertisement The 37-year-old big man is already past his prime, but his size at 7'1" and 282 pounds would make a huge difference for the Warriors. Additionally, his championship experience would help him establish an early bond with Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and head coach Steve Kerr. With averages of 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists this season, Brook Lopez isn't the big man he used to be, but his elite shot-blocking ability and impressive shooting stroke make him worthy of consideration for the Warriors. He might even sign for a discount given his age and the team's status as an alluring destination. Whether it's by trade or through free agency, we can expect the Warriors to make some moves this summer to help Steph's championship pursuit. Who they add may very well determine how far they get, and the Warriors cannot afford to get it wrong and waste what is left of Curry's career. NBA Star Makes Admission After Being In Lakers-Clippers Trade

NBA Star Makes Admission After Being In Lakers-Clippers Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Lakers' decision to trade Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in February left a significant void in their frontcourt. Without a dominant presence in the paint, the Lakers adopted a center-less, perimeter-focused strategy. This approach, however, proved detrimental in the postseason, as first-round opponents, the Minnesota Timberwolves, exploited their lack of interior defense and rebounding. Advertisement In response, the Lakers are actively seeking to improve their roster with a reliable big man to play alongside the superstar duo of LeBron James and Luka Doncic. The front office is exploring various options to restore balance and physicality to the team's lineup, aiming to recapture the dominance that characterized their previous championship runs. Los Angeles Lakers GM Rob Pelinka© Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn Images Perhaps most frustrating for Lakers fans amid the team's center search, is that former LA big man Ivica Zubac has emerged into a legitimate star just miles up the road in Inglewood. Zubac recently shared insights into his early NBA experiences in a conversation with Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson. The Croatian center recounted his rookie season interactions with Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, admitting he still uses those early-career lessons in his game. Advertisement "I learned a lot from him," Zubac said. "I use that hook shot every game. I work on it every day. I'm trying to perfect it and have one of the best hooks in the league." Zubac's journey with the Lakers began when he was selected 32nd overall in the 2016 NBA Draft. During his tenure, he showcased potential as a traditional center, emphasizing fundamentals and post moves. However, in February 2019, the Lakers traded him to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Mike Muscala—a move that drew criticism from fans and analysts alike. Since joining the Clippers, Zubac has evolved into a formidable presence in the paint. In the 2024-25 season, he averaged 16.8 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game, shooting an impressive 62.8% from the field and earning All-Defensive honors. Luka Doncic Sends 4-Word Message After NBA Legend Calls Out Mavericks originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Ranking second all-time in head coaching wins behind former San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, Nelson is a basketball icon who was recognized as such on Sunday. Advertisement While this honor was about Nelson, the 85-year-old used it as an opportunity to spotlight Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic. Attending the news conference wearing Doncic's signature Jordan Brand shoes, Nelson took a moment to call out the Dallas Mavericks for trading him. 'I'm wearing Luka's new shoes from Nike,' he said. 'Just got on the market. And I'm wearing them in protest for the trade from Dallas. I think it was a tremendous mistake by the Dallas franchise to trade him. And I want everybody to know that.' Early Monday morning, Doncic took to his Instagram story with a four-word message for Nelson. Advertisement 'Congratulations Coach!' he exclaimed. 'Nice shoes!' Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic posts on his Instagram / Instagram More than four months removed from the Doncic trade, it remains one of the most-discussed topics in the NBA landscape. Beloved in Dallas, the Slovenian guard made five All-NBA teams and led the Mavericks to a Western Conference championship last season. Beginning a new chapter in Los Angeles, Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists in 28 regular season games for LA. He helped the Lakers secure the Western Conference's third seed, but they were eliminated in the opening round by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
